Jennifer Duban Mrs. Blatchley Social Studies 20 Feb. 2024 The Women’s Rights Movement The howling wind whips through your hair and the frigid rain is pouring on your face, but still, you stand. The jeering crowd is violent with its taunts and jeers, but still, you stay. Your feet ache with seemingly endless pain, and you feel weak and could collapse, but still, you push onward. You are fighting for your rights, and the suffrage for you, your friends, and your children. You cannot stop now (Van Garnier). This was the daily experience of women suffragists during the Women’s Rights Movement while they were picketing the White House. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Alice Paul’s organization allowed opportunities for other women to join the cause. It created an unstoppable team fighting for the same goal, suffrage. Additionally, these leaders utilized publicity to further support development. Furthermore, publicity is another crucial component that was utilized to fight women’s suffrage. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a suffragist, began the publicity of action with the Seneca Falls Convention. This occurred in 1848 in Seneca Falls, New York, and was the first gathering to discuss women’s rights. However, newspapers throughout the U.S. criticized the women and the movement, calling it unfeminine and immoral. But in spite of this, she was pleased with how much attention their ideas were gaining (One Woman, One Vote). To continue, when women picketed the White House in 1917 to support their cause, they were arrested for “obstructing sidewalk traffic”. While they were in jail, they were treated atrociously.
