Elizabeth Catlett was one of the most revolutionary activist for the black community, through art. In my opinion I thought that was very wise seeing that; art is a public form that can never be hidden or blocked out no matter the circumstances. Meanwhile, her beautiful Cedar statue named “homage to my young black sisters” is seen posing in the infamous black power stance. Shape, color and texture are all elements of art that are present in such a majestic sculpture. It's shape within the pose captures the black women curves. Throughout history black women have been notorious for their curves, having wide hips and a slim waistline. I think this artwork is about an African American woman who despite of her current situation, continues to surprise or surround any obstacle that she's presented with. Additionally it was used as a form of motivation to young black girls. Whom were demoralized and were taught self hatred by the various media outlets they were exposed to. Fashion is one of the many examples, where black females tried to emulate the Caucasian fashion. Applying products and Performing rigorous applications of hair straightener to “dekinkify” or straighten and they're beautiful, natural curly hair. The shape of the sculpture, doesn't capture the best qualities about a black woman. But what or whom she commonly is; the shape, curves and sturdiness. All of which are what I believe makes a black woman the most important part of developing a society or assemblage.
