The Bombing of the American Embassy

...The Bombing of the American Embassy in Kenya | | POL-375 International Terrorism | Abstract Americans have focused majorly on the horror and devastation of September 11, 2010. The media covered acts of heroism and terrorism on US soil. These events were horrific; however, they were not the first time that terrorism has touched our precious land. The bombing of the US Embassy, in Kenya, is just one incident that occurred prior to 911. When we think of terrorism towards the US, everyone naturally thinks of 911; although, this would be a natural reflect, it shouldn’t be. Our country has been under attack several years prior to that memorable day. Does anyone remember the “powerful terrorist car bomb exploded outside US embassy in Kenya, killing at least 81 people – including eight Americans – and injuring more than 1600.” (William Claiborne. The Washington Post. Washington, D.C.: Aug 8, 1998. pg. A.01) American lives were lost on this day, also. Not only were there Americans among this death toll, but it was “confirmed that Osama bin Laden planned, financed and executed the attack.” (Jack Kelley. USA TODAY. McLean, Va.: Aug 21, 1998. pg. 04.A) As we live in the comfort of our homes, and go about our lives; our country has been under assault from this mastermind dating back to 1995. This event has familiar aspects to the mayhem that occurred on September 11th. There was a simultaneous bombing at the US Embassy in Tanzania on August 8th. These events...

Then they continued their travel, but were unable to catch up Timur because of his rapid moving, so they had to follow his way till the Samarqand, capital of Timurid Empire. All the descriptions in his journey were witnessed by him personally. His diary is distinguished from other sources by it detailed and precise notes kept while travelling. At first when you start reading this narrative you immediately pay attention to the dates and days of week that he described in his work. Clavijo and his company were treated very well when they were in the territory of Timur’s Empire. About this he wrote from the beginning till the end adding Tmiur’s words that they should attain higher position and be treated better than Chinese delegation, who came to demand tribute. Self Defence In The Crucible

...it's a loved one or a stranger. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Reverend Hale begged Elizabeth Proctor to tell her husband John to confess to witchcraft, “Life is God’s most precious gift; no principle, however glorious, may justify the taking of it,”(122) even though that might not all be the case. The statement is correct when saying that life is very valuable but wrong because there are principles that justify taking lives such as to keep others’ safe, keep oneself safe, and to protect one’s rights and beliefs. Countless of people can condone taking a life when keeping others’ safe is involved. One example would be to kill terrorists like Osama bin Laden, founder of al-Qaeda. He was one of the members responsible for the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, the September 11 attacks, and the 2002 Bali bombings. To stop further mass-casualty attacks around the world, the US government decided to pursue a War on Terror. After nearly a decade of searching for bin Laden, the United States special forces military unit found him in a private residential compound in Abbottabad after being ordered by United States President, Barack Obama. Bin Laden was confirmed to have been killed during the raid. If the US didn’t resort to killing him, he could have caused more mass-killings, and many more casualties would be in the hands of the US for not doing anything to prevent more attacks from occurring. Another example of killing terrorists would be some members of al-Qaeda,...

What Do Kume Kunitake’s Observations of the West During His Travels with the Iwakura Embassy Reveal About Japan in the 1870s?

...WHAT DO KUME KUNITAKE’S OBSERVATIONS OF THE WEST DURING HIS TRAVELS WITH THE IWAKURA EMBASSY REVEAL ABOUT JAPAN IN THE 1870S? In December 1871 the prominent Japanese minister Iwakura Tomomi led almost half of the new Meiji government (“the government”) on an embassy around the Western world. Travelling with the ‘Iwakura Embassy’ was Kume Kunitake, a Neo-Confucian scholar and historian. Employed as both Iwakura’s personal secretary and the Embassy’s recorder, Kume along with his assistant Sugiura Kozo (later Hatakeyama Yoshinari) were instructed to record what the Embassy witnessed in the West. The record they produced was to form the basis for Kume’s ‘True Account’ (‘Jikki’) of the Embassy’s ‘Journey of Observations’ (‘Kairan’). Clearly set aside from the Jikki’s narrative in indented sections are Kume’s ‘personal views and observations’ (“Kume’s observations”). Yet these are much more than mere observations. Indeed, before Kume could publish his work he required the approval of Iwakura. While this presumably encouraged Kume to toe the government line, it also gave Iwakura considerable influence over Kume. Considering that the Jikki was revised over ten times before it was approved, it seems that Iwakura fully exercised this influence. Indeed, as Kume’s observations often appear to digress from the main narrative it suggests that they were imposed into Jikki at a late stage of compilation, presumably during these revisions. This suggests that these observations were written...
