Emily Dickenson lived most of her life as a recluse. People would find it odd that she would always stay in her room for most of the day. This particular lifestyle is reflected in some of her poems. “I’m nobody! Who are you?” is one such poem that deals with Dickenson’s anti-social behaviors. In this poem, Dickenson explains that being alone is not as bad as everyone makes it seem. She is perfectly content with being by herself without much company around her. She does not feel the need to announce to the world of her existence. She does not want to be like everyone else who croaks like frogs in a swamp on a summer’s day, as she puts it. Two such successful feminist authors of 19th century literature are Emily Dickinson and Kate Chopin. Although both have extensive works to choose from, focusing on one example of each writer will provide a precise and clear proof of their ability to empower the women of their time to break through society’s mental barriers by shocking their sensibilities with scandalous models of free thought. Emily Dickinson’s 1862 poem, ‘The Soul Selects Her Society,’ places women as having power over men, certainly not indicative of the 19th century patriarchal society. The ‘Soul’ is definitely feminine in this work and yet Dickinson has attributed characteristics to the ‘Soul’ that at the time are considered masculine. This feminine ‘Soul’ is steady, “Like stone,” commanding, “select(ing) her own Society,” imposing, “Unmoved — an Emperor be kneeling Upon her Mat” and decisive, “Then — close the Valves of her attention.” The male in this poem, the Emperor, represents all men as they are perceived to hold the power, but Dickinson through this poem declares that women dictate their own destiny when they understand that the power of men is limited by the amount of permission granted to men by women to use their power over them. ...Emily Dickinson is one of the most well known poets of her time. Though her life was uneventful, what went on inside her house behind closed doors is unbelievable. After her father died she met Reverend Charles Wadsworth. She soon came to regard him as one of her most trusted friends, and she created in his image the lover whom she was never to know except in her imagination. It is also said that it was around 1812 when he was removed to San Francisco that she began her withdrawal from society. During this time she began to write many of her poems. She wrote mainly in private, guarding all of her poems from all but a few select friends. She did not write for fame, but instead as a way of expressing her feelings. In her lifetime only six of her poems were even printed; none of which had her consent. It was not until her death of Brights Disease in May of 1862, that many of her poems were even read (Chelsea House of Library Criticism 2837). Thus proving that the analysis on Emily Dickinson’s poetry is some of the most emotionally felt works of the nineteenth century. Miss Dickinson is often compared with other poets and writers, but unlike Shakespeare, Miss Dickinson is without opinions (Tate 86). Her verses and technical license often seem mysterious and can confuse critics, but after all is said, it is realized that like most poets Miss Dickinson is no more mysterious than a banker. ...Emily Dickinson’s poetic form, with her four-line stanzas, ABCB rhyme schemes, and alternations in iambic meter between tetrameter and trimeter, is derived from Psalms and Protestant hymns, Dickinson systematically takes the forms interposing rhythmic dashes intended to interrupt the meter and indicate the short pauses. Her subjects are most often parts of the topography of her own psyche. Dickenson explores her feelings with conscientious and often painful honesty but never loses sight of their poetic application. These transcendentalists expressed their beliefs through writings such as poems and essays. These few transcendentalists went out of their way to represent their ideals and beliefs. Only a number of people understood the idea of transcendentalism because it is so complex and involved a much deeper thought process. It was this complexity within Transcendentalism that makes it stick out in history still to this day. Transcendentalism is an idealistic philosophical and social movement that developed in New England. Transcendentalism was developed in reaction to rationalism in 1836. It taught that divinity pervades all nature and humanity. The transcendentalist members held progressive views on feminism and communal living. Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of the better known transcendentalists, became a transcendentalist in 1832 which lead to the writing of “Self-Reliance” and “The American Scholar.” He later became the central figure of his literary and philosophical group, known as the American Transcendentalist. In the 1840’s he founded and co-edited the literary magazine The Dial. In my opinion, both show structures of control and oppression. Control is the influence of others' behavior and oppression is unjust treatment. Both literary works are an accurate display of both control and oppression. "The Lottery" shows control through its leadership and tradition.
