As a manager for over ten years, I have had the privilege of being on both ends of the recognition exchange. As an employee, I have the great opportunity to be awarded numerous promotions and bonuses because of my performance, but these acts of recognition by my employers felt more process driven or driven by business needs. Although these promotions and bonuses were greatly appreciated, they left much to be desired in recognizing the value of my contribution to the organization, this level of appreciation was found in more simple acts of recognition, ones which were more personal and intentional. One specific example of this type of recognition actually came during a time in our company that was uncertain and unsettling.
