In Orson Scott Card's science fiction novel Ender's Game, Graff is an essential part of the character development of Ender. While some may consider him to be ruthless and a villain, Graff is a hero because though he acknowledges that providing constant challenge and breaking Ender is cruel, it is what is necessary for the survival of the human race. In the book, Graff is the colonel at Battle School and believes that it is in the best interest of the human race if Ender is pushed to his "full potential"- an extent most would consider extreme.
