This midterm portfolio shows how I have progressed has a college reader and writer. Before this class I had trouble even understanding how to write a thesis and now I think I can definitely write a college level thesis. I have progressed to know how to incorporate my evidence into my concise and focused thesis statement. For example in the self assessment essay my thesis was, “Due to transferring to many schools over my first two years of college, I feel like I have had the opportunity to build up many habits of mind from Framework for Success in Post-Secondary Writing, especially in flexibility, openness and persistence but still can develop in metacognition and creativity in order to become a more successful college writer.” This showed that I could adapt a thesis to the assignment and it was focused and used my sources. At this point in the semester, a strength I have is the ability to connect source evidence with my thesis. I am able to develop my focused thesis around source-based evidence. For example in the college learning essay I was able to use my interview with my friend who was an elementary teacher to help develop my thesis about how teaching has changed due to technology. I also think another strength I have is organizing my paper in a proper order. In the three essays in this portfolio I organized the essays with a focused thesis, introduction, body paragraphs and an organized conclusion. A challenge I have is using signal phrases to introduce my source-based evidence. I have worked on revising the essay on college learning to try and use...

...The Happiest Place On Earth It’s one of my faintest memories, always heating my father explain how life was so much better for so many reasons, when he was growing up. The way he would explain the trusting communities he once enjoyed playing with his friends made feelings of jealousy arise, longing for something like that in my own reality. Everyday life in Arizona proved vastly different, surrounded by so many people who weren’t from this state. With the lifestyle came my everyday environment, filled with drugs and distrust for the next man I would encounter. Ready for a change and a way out, a geographical change came my way and opened me up to a world I hadn't known existed. I haven’t taken as much gratitude from anything as I have small town, Minnesota because of it’s hospitable people, beautiful surroundings, and delicious foods. Traveling through green-filled, wide open spaces, from one town to the next, I had arrived. Driving into my next home, filled with enough anxiety to kill a horse, was the town of Fairmont, Minnesota. With a population less than most apartment complexes I’d resided, I drove past the first resident of this small community. To absolute shock, I had received a wave of the hand, followed by the next resident flashing a peace sign in my direction. As though this wasn’t enough of a friendly surprise, Freedom was a place I’d refill the car with gasoline. Apart from the wonderful customer service spoken in a Canadian-like accent, I’d been rejected......

...Youth violence in America is an ongoing discussion that has been in the news for quite some time now. Kids are so easily influenced that it is normal to see them in some type of negativity. This matter causes children in our society to engage into violent crimes in school and in their communities. Some say the reason for this is because lack of attention in the homes or parents just not being available for their children. Are these reasonable excuses and why do our kids act in such violent behavior? For many years we try to get our youth involved into extra-curricular activities to stay out of troubles. Sports teams, educational activities, and tutorials can keep children busy when they are not in school. Many factors are mentioned when the media discuss youth violence including: video game interaction, trouble in our schools, and dysfunctional communities. Parents should be aware of signs that their child can be in danger of either committing a crime or being a victim. Something should be done to convince the kids that trouble is so easy to get into but so hard to get out of. The research will continue to grow in the upcoming years to investigate the youth violence and to find ways to keep our children out of trouble. During the teenage years of a child’s life, they are exposed to quite some violence in the media. The main source is video games. Every child loves to play these fast-paced games that contains three-dimensional graphics. The parents do not know if they are......

...These articles “Letting go” and “What adolescents Miss when we let them grow up in Cyberspace” argues how family and cyberspace are strong influences in the growing of children. Basically in “letting go” this article demonstrate about the relation between parents and their kids. Sam Schulman said “So why can't parents today leave their children alone for five minutes? There are probably a number of reasons.” Probably, do parents really want the best for them trying to being communicative with their kids or do they just want to protect them? In “What adolescents Miss when we let them grow up Cyberspace,” the author had mentioned “adolescents are drawn to cyberspace for different reasons than adults.” We can analyze how today adolescents adopted the internet as something important in their lives. The perspective in young people today is that their way to proceed is changing as world is changing, too. The family is considered as the set of people united by kinship , as the basic unit of social organization , the functions and roles are to provide their protection , companionship, security , socialization, and primarily a source of affection Member and emotional support especially for children, who are in the process of development. The family is the primary agent from which the child will develop their personality, behavior, learning and values. Today it is known that type relationship that exists between parents and children will influence the behavior and......

...Raising the Minimum Driving Age ------------------------------------------------- “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States.” ------------------------------------------------- “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States.” Over the last decade, teenage car crashes and teenage deaths have increased significantly. “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States” (McBride). This can be due to many reasons including a teen’s maturity level. The older a person is, the more mature they tend to be. This is not true for all people because if it were then all driving teenagers would end up in vehicle accidents. Maturity does have a lot to do with it and I feel that if the national driving age would be lifted to 18 years then this country would experience less of these occurrences. I have done much research on the subject of teens and maturity. All of the sources I have read say pretty much the same thing – the different parts of a person’s brain mature at different stages in their life. “The cortex is the part of the brain that controls thinking, decision making, and judgment” (Johnson 51). Compared to adults, most teens and adolescents lack the proper skills......

...THESIS: There needs to be better laws, and guidelines for questioning and interrogating suspects, to reduce the amount of false confessions which lead to wrongful convictions. BACKGOUND: In the last few years there has been a lot of news coverage of convicted people being found innocent after serving years in prison for crimes they did not commit. It can take several years and many appeals for the false confessor to have their case heard in the court system; if at all. Courts seem to have the tendency to accept the confession at face value and are reluctant to question it. I believe this happens because “law enforcement” took the confession and judges tend to believe that all rules were followed by police. I believe that if the prosecution is going to use a confession in their case, and as one of their strongest pieces of “evidence”, a hearing should be set to decide on the validity of the confession. Even when defense attorneys file motions to have them thrown out due to allegations of coercion, the courts deny the motion almost instantly, which leads to a wrongful conviction. This is the very reason new laws, and guidelines need to be implemented in regards to questioning and interrogating a suspect by police, in order to get a confession. OBJECTIVE: My intention is to show that with stricter laws and guidelines for questioning and interrogating suspects, the amount of false confessions would drop considerably, and in turn the wrongful conviction rate would drop as......

The Most Important Person in My Life

...ENG101/29 Professor R Gaines ENG101/29 March 10,2013 The most important person in my life. . From the time we are born we are being influenced by those around us, be it a relative, friend, or teacher. We are influenced by their character, traits and form opinions that will last a lifetime. Although influential people have come and gone in my life, my boyfriend, Daniel, has remained the most important and influential person for the past fifteen years. It was in November 2000 when I first met Daniel at the “Stratford Athletic Club.” I attended the club almost every day. One evening a tall gentleman with an athletic body approached me and with a soft-spoken voice proceeded to ask,” How is your workout going?” I turned towards him, looked at his amicable face, and with a barely detectable smile said, “Fine, thank you.” This was the beginning of a most satisfying, educational and enduring relationship. Right after I met him I noticed his amazing organization skills. He is able to stay focused no matter how distracting the situation might be. He simply minimizes the distraction. For example, if he is focusing his attention on writing an important paper, he will ignore the phone when it’s ringing, and will not answer the doorbell. I always had a problem with focusing. Since I started to spend time with Daniel I learn to remained focused on my goals and not to be affected by any adverse elements. Years ago while driving in the center lane...

The Golden Rule

...Jorie Madderra Composition 1- Eng101 9/7/2014 It is my belief that the world can be transformed if all of the human race followed one simple rule. This simple rule can be found throughout history and in virtually every culture. We know it in Western civilization as the “Golden Rule” or ethic of reciprocity. It simply means treat others as you would like to be treated. Be kind and help others just because it makes your soul smile. This golden rule of ethics only demands that we see beyond ourselves and are willing to treat others better then they treat us at times. It is argued that following in this belief leaves you open to being taken advantage of. Some people will see you as an easy target, weak, naïve even. Since we live in a world where “only the strong survive” and egos are of then more important than morality, ethics are easily thrown out the window. To this argument I bring you to the core value or root of the Golden Rule. It is the willingness to treat others better than they treat you and the knowing that you just might be taken advantage of every now and then, and being okay with it that is important. Our Golden Rule, or variations of it can be found in Jewish literature, Islamic Writ, the Hindu Holy Books, Taoism, Buddhist Udana-Varga, Confucianism, African Traditional religions, and in the writings of many well-known philosophers. The Holy Bible makes many references to this law of ethics. It is in Matthew 7:12 of the English Standard Version that the......

Jungle

...Zenja Jones Eng101 – Smith 2 Nov 2015 Jungle The most significant thing I’ve read does not come from a book, a magazine, or a blog. It comes from a hip-hop song. The song was made by a Canadian rapper, turned singer, named Aubrey Graham. He is well known as Drake in the music industry. The song I am referring to is called ‘Jungle.’ There is one lyric in particular that caught my attention and stuck with me. The lyric itself personally inspires me to be my best and encourages me to keep moving toward success. The song is fairly new. It was released in February of 2015, along with seventeen other songs, on Drake’s album ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.’ This is his fourth commercial released album. It was randomly available on iTunes on the thirteenth of February. The album has been very successful, as well as his others. The album debuted as number one on the Canadian Albums Chart and the Billboard 200. Because of ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late,’ Drake became the first rapper to top Billboard’s Artist 100 chart. Jungle has the third most plays out of the whole album. Drake has always been one of my favorite artists to listen to. I feel his music is more relatable than others. Jungle really grabbed ahold of my mind and wedged itself in there, continuously playing even when I’m not listening to the actual song. It loops the same part of the song over and over again when I’m in apposition of giving up. It is a rather emotional song though. The meaning of the...

My Daughter

...Rough Draft Michelle Corona Eng101 Motherhood is one of greatest gifts from God. A baby can change your life completely in many ways. Becoming a mother is a thrilling, life-long commitment and a learning experience. I know it, because it happened to me. My daughter’s name is Brianna; she is the being that has influenced my life the most. Sine the moment I became pregnant I felt something change in me. I became a understandable, cautious, and more mature person. I was now aware that it wasn’t just me in this world. I realized that there was a being that depended on me. June 26th 2006 a hot, sunny Monday morning this was the day where my life would change completely, and I would finally meet the most important person in my life. I was feeling sharp pains in my expanded belly. As the morning went on I was feeling, like he pains came more often. I showered to see if that would make them go away, but nothing changed. My mother drove me to the hospital as fast as she could; talking to me and making me feel calm, as the pains grew stronger. By the time I arrived at the hospital it was 8:00 A.M. and I could barely stand. The nurses signed me in and I was taken to a room where I was examined by a doctor that revealed I was 5 centimeters dilated. I was surprised; I had 5 more centimeters to go. How could this be possible? I believed my pains were bad I thought I was ready to push. Well I was wrong. But, after 9 hours (5:19 P.M.) I was in labor and in moments the nurse and......

Cats and Dogs

...Mikayla Watters Eng101 M-Q August 25, 2013 Mr.R Cats and Dogs Cats and dogs, an argument people have been having for centuries. This tension is so bad, there’s even a stereotype that dogs and cats don’t like each other either. Conversations like, which is better? Which one can see further? Whose nose is more sensitive? Which ones cleaner? Which one is friendlier? Who can hear further? Which one is easier to take care of? These are questions people argue every day. There are two different types of people in this world, dog lovers and cat lovers, and they both think their pets are the best. But how are they so sure? One big controversy between dogs and cats, is that both species lovers believe their pet can hear, see, and smell better than the other. But who’s correct? On the category of smell, dogs can smell human fingerprints that are a week old. Their noses are so sensitive they can even smell electricity. The source of the dogs exceptional smell ability is their wet nose, which of course a cat does not have. However, even though dogs may have the upper paw on smell, cats come on top with hearing. The cat’s outer ear flap can rotate 180 degrees and works like a high tech satellite to locate extremely faint noises. Cats can also hear higher pitches than dogs, a cats range starts at 30 hertz and goes up to 60 kilohertz. However a dog’s hearing only goes up to 40 kilohertz. Cats and dogs are red-green colored blind, meaning they see various shades of yellows, whites...

Social Media and Identity

...Anna Mangoyan Stephen Housepian ENG101 7/21/13 Social Media is stealing our Identity We are still excited by sharing our personal lives with social networks without realizing how we can be affected. Social Networks collect our identity, track our every movement, and can affect our future. Many people don’t understand that social networks collect our identity for their own business profits. We are having a good time by checking out our friends pictures and reading their thoughts and experiences online. If we think more deeply we will understand that there is something wrong. We like the fact that Facebook or other websites advertise our favorite stuff. For instance, I like to shop online and I always receive advertisement about fashion which was very entertaining for me. I was very excited to go to different websites and shop around. Now I am receiving so much junk emails and if I don’t delete them I will end up with two hundred emails a week. This is insane; every company sells each other our personal information to run their businesses. I feel that we are under control and we don’t have the same freedom anymore. Social networks track every movement we make. They are using us around the world by harming our lives. For example, I heard on the radio that now employers check our social networks before hiring us. They check our profiles and things we wrote online, which give them the idea whether or not to hire us. Moreover, credit card companies also do......
