Running head: Mise-en-scène

Elements of Design: Mise-en-scène

I chose the movie Titanic, and the movie clip I choose was I’m Flying. Titanic is a 1997 American classic romantic tragedy film directed, written, co-produced, co-edited and partly financed by James Cameron. Of course you have the production designer who is Peter Lamont, and the art directors who are Martin Laing and Charles Lee. In this movie each artist had their own roles in the production of the film. I will explain each role.
First there is the Director James Cameron and his role is the dynamic creative force in a film's production. His role acts as the critical link between the production, technical and creative teams. James Cameron was responsible for artistically translating the film's written script into real images and sounds on the screen. He had to visualize the style and structure of the film, and then act as both a narrator and team leader to bring his vision to reality. His main responsibility is script editing, casting, shot composition, shot selection and editing.
Peter Lamont is the production designer and his responsibility is the whole Art Department. Mr. Lamont role in helping the director was also to achieve the film's visual requirements, and in providing producers with carefully designed schedules which offer feasible ways of making films within agreed budgets and specific periods of time. The look of a set or location is fundamental in drawing the audience into the story. This location is an critical element in making a film believable and suggestive. A lot of hard work and imagination goes into constructing an suitable setting to any story, and into selecting or constructing appropriate locations or sets. The art directors who are Martin Laing and Charles Lee also have a very important role in any movie. As art directors they delegate tasks to production, set, electrical and lighting designers, unifying those roles in their attempt to bring a director’s aesthetic vision to life. Set design is a vital characteristic of film production that executes on a director's vision. A team of talented individuals, including set designers, prop masters, graphic designers, costume designers and other artists, performs research that is vital to the correct interpretation of a director’s visual ideas. The artist utilized lightening in the scene by implementing a golden lighting which seemed to come unsurprisingly from the evening sky. The way the sun played a very important role in helping the light from its rays to bounce off the used camera creating a sunset. Also, the lights allowed it to create a romantic mood which was appropriate with the film. The lightening also gives us the image of what era it was. It also gave way for the romance that was shown throughout the entire film. The setting of this story takes place in the middle of an ocean on the ship, back in 1912. The two are in love and Jack takes her to a place where she can imagine how it feels to fly. The culture of this film is one that is separated by a higher class. They had to keep their love affair a secret because she was soon to be wed and he was not acceptable in her family. In the clip they are on the edge of the boat and she felt relaxed and free. I think for a moment she escaped from her current situation to another dimension of Jacks world. Costumes can tell us a lot about a film character. The costumes does this by showing these the characters social status and the class they belong to. Thus, like in the movie Jack an were from two extremely different social classes and that was clearly brought out in costume. Moreover, they can also give us a clue of the general individuality of a person. A character's alteration in the course of a film is commonly shown in a change of costume. It can also designate a character's emotional position. Hairstyle and make-up has the same effect as costumes because it helps to tell a better story of what the director has visualized for his film. These two features can tell you what era the director is trying to reach for and what class of people they are. For instance in Titanic, Rose was a well dressed, clean hair, clothes, and very nice make-up. The other girls in the film looked lower class because they weren’t as fresh as Rose. Even when she is on the top of the ship with Jack you can tell in their style of clothes that he had nothing but she had it all. Mise-en-scène refers to everything that appears before the camera down to its arrangements, sets, props, actors, costumes, and lighting. My opinion of the mise-en-scène was that everything from the props to the setting had a significant role in the director’s ideas. The film made you believe that you were back in 1912 and you could feel the passion of their love for each other regardless of class. The overall idea was in chronological order and worked together. The costumes, hair, make-up, music, romance, and scenery captured James Cameron’s feel for an actual event that happened in 1912.

...Journal Week 5 D. Josh Rhoderick ENG125 Introduction to Literature Instructor: Trillium Sara Hinton June 21st, 2015 In the “Hills like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemmingway we have a struggling conflict between a couple. At first I didn’t realize what the couple was talking about. After reading it twice it dawned on me. Interesting how this example of them and symbolism comes out in this story. The specific conflict in the story is a couple that is talking about getting an abortion. There are various references that currently they are not very happy and that getting the abortion will somehow make them happy. He is very clueless to her emotions regarding this life changing event and the feelings she is experiencing. He also says that he doesn’t want her to do it if she doesn’t want to. "You've got to realize," he said, "that I don't want you to do it if you don't want to. I'm perfectly willing to go through with it if it means anything to you." I think the conflict is very significant as Jig is looking for a connection regarding the baby and clearly there is little hope for one as the insensitive American is frustrating her. I find from the text there are very similar elements of symbolism, metaphor, allusion and allegory apply sort of mixed and sprinkled into most of the stories I have read. I really enjoyed the symbolism and how the Hills stood for life giving and yet highlights her aloneness and emotional disconnect to the American. Ernest Hemingway...

...Editing The Shower- Psycho (1960) The clip from this shower scene in the movie Psycho was very simple, but very effective in the way it got to the point of showing us as the viewers what Mr. Hitchcock was obviously getting to, which was the murder of the young female. The transition of scenes when the young lady was showering and when the door started to open with the murderer coming in set the tone to what was about to come up. It had you anticipating on how the murderer was going to execute this scene and had me at the edge of my seat the first time that I’ve ever seen this movie. The shots didn’t stay at a certain point too long during this scene and that put a sense of intensity of some sort, especially when the killer was stabbing her victim and the shots were jumping constantly to different shots. Cinematography The Long Take: Goodfellas The cinematography in this Goodfellas scene tends to focus less on the couple and more on what is going on around them. The camera follows them while portraying everything else that is going on through each room or hallway they are walking through. The view of the couple from behind lets you pay more attention to what they were actually trying to say, since it wasn’t a close up face to face scene. The overall angles and shots they used were perfect from beginning to the end. Lighting Jurassic Park- Raptors in the Kitchen (1993) This scene of Jurassic Park was one of the more memorable scenes for me growing up. The lighting...

...Elements of Design Jimmy Pugh ENG225 Instructor Allison Sansbury September 23rd, 2013 The scene that I have chosen to write about is from the movie “Elf”. The name of the scene is “The Angry Elf”. The director for the film was Jon Favreau. The production designer was Rusty Smith and the art director Kelvin Humenny. Director Jon Favreau set out to create a modern-day holiday movie with the film “Elf.” “Elf” follows the misadventures of Buddy, an orphan raised by elves who sets out from the North Pole for New York City in search of his real father. Rusty Smith, the production designer, worked for days with the art department. He had the art department making hand-made Christmas decorations so that it filled up the apartment. Kelvin Humenny, the art director oversaw the overall visual appearance and how it communicated visually to a target audience. He made decisions about visual elements that were used, what artistic style to use, and when to use motion. The lighting used in the scene would be described as typical office lighting. It might be little bit dim for the dismal ending of the scene. The film takes place in current day. The location begins at the North Pole and ends up in New York City. The costume for the main character begins with him in an Elf costume. The scene that I...

...Title: Elements of Illusion Course: ENG225: Introduction to Film Instructor: Jonathan Belle Author: Amanda Manley Date: 3/20/2014 During the process of envisioning and designing a film, the director, production designer, and art director (in collaboration with the cinematographer) are concerned with several major spatial and temporal elements. These design elements punctuate and underscore the movement of figures within the frame, including the following: setting, lighting, costuming, makeup, and hairstyles. Choose a scene from movieclips.com. In a three to five page paper, (excluding the cover and reference pages) analyze the miser-en-scène. Used this type of lighting because of the significant effects it would present in the scene (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). When the movie starts, Aro the leader of the Volturi is fascinated when he sees Bella is immune to all the vampire’s amazing powers the lighting looks hazy with smoky appearance. The lighting defines Aro making him stand out more; his eyes were noticeable blood shoot red while the appearance of Marcus and Caius were a bit blurred. I thought the lighting of the scene evokes fear, worry, and death of Bella and Edward. The use of back lighting made the focus on Belle clearer which gives me the impression that the director wanted to show the dissimilar of dead and living highlights to detail features of Bella’s rosy cheekbone. By using low-key lighting, this allows the film to have huge amounts of shadow which...

An Evolving Industry

...ENG225: Introduction to Film   This question really gets you thinking of when you were a child and how you watched movies and compare it to how it is done today.  First I don’t think anything can replace the theater experience.  But even the theater experience has changed with technology; for example I remember watching regular movies as a child, as a teenager I experienced 3D and then we had THX and high definition.  Now there is the 4D experience with D-Box seats.  So movie production has stepped up their game and really increased the quality of movies.  Outside of the theater I can say we have seen the greatest improvement.  Movies can be streamed to phones, PCs, tablets, and even television sets from a variety of medias.  Some of these medias are Hulu, Netflix, Blockbuster, Direct TV, Comcast, Apple TV, Roku, WD TV Live Plus and Sony SMP-N100.  Due to the demand to see movies when and where you want it the size and quality has change of the files.  For example in the past to download a movie you needed at least 4GBs of space or on a DVDR; now I can watch a movies on my 8GB iPod Nano and this have over 3000 songs and apps on it.  Additionally, it doesn’t take as long to stream/buffer the movies.  I also think movies has gotten shorter compared to movies in the past. “From 1930 to 1960, most films averaged 2 to 4 minutes per scene, and many scenes ran 4 minutes or more… In films made after 1961 most scenes run between 1.5 and 3 minutes. The practice reflects the contemporary...

Blade Runner Critique

...Blade Runner Critique ENG225: Introduction to Film (GSK1442C) Professor Brad Waltman November 16, 2014   The film Blade Runner is an outstanding example of the science fiction genre of film. The film uses it’s futuristic setting, combined with the plot of a policeman hunting down illegal and violent androids, to set the stage for a truly thought provoking film. The viewer is exposed to new ideas about morality and the boundaries of technology. Blade Runner is widely regarded as a pioneer film in the science fiction subgenre of “cyberpunk” and its dystopian style has influenced dozens, if not hundreds of films since it’s release. The style, message and distinct futuristic darkness of Blade Runner is an outstanding part of the science fiction genre and a fascinating example of movie making. Blade Runner was released in 1982 and much of its distinct personality comes from the unique people involved in the film, both in front of, and behind the camera. Ridley Scott directed the film and is revolves around one of his favorites elements, artificial intelligence. Blade Runner is regarded is a Scott classic, and displays the elements that audiences expect from one of his films. Jordan Cronenweth worked as the film’s cinematographer and was regarded as one of the best in the industry, even years after his death. Cronenweth’s dark and moody work provided much of the noire and intrigue of Blade Runner. The film stared Harrison Ford as the not too heroic main character...

P.S. I Love You

...“P.S. I Love You” Cindy Sheldon ENG225: Introduction to Film Instructor: Sarah Snook September 7, 2013 “P.S. I Love You” Introduction: For this film critique essay I will be writing about the movie P.S. I Love You (2007). This paper will explore the storytelling, the actors as well as how they act in the film. We will explore the cinematography, editing, sound, and the style and directing for this movie. The last few things we will explore are the impact this film had on society (if any), the genre, what is the best way to analyze this film. When all these aspects of the movie are examined we will see how a script comes to life on the big screen. Storytelling: This film is shot in non-linear form, it starts with the present and throughout the movie we are given glimpses into the past. This story takes place in several different places which include Ireland and New York City. The main female character (Holly) experiences an internal conflict when her husband Gerry passes away from an illness at a very young age. Holly is able to resolve her conflict with help from her friends, family, and her deceased husband. The symbolism in this film is that love can overcome anything including death. For us, the viewers, relates to our human nature. If we are lucky we have all been able to experience the type of love that is portrayed in this film. That love that we never see coming, but hits us like a “ton of bricks”. The kind of love most of us only get to experience...

Final Film Critique La Confidential

...Final Film Critique – LA Confidential Adam Ehinger Ashford University: ENG225 Instructor Michael O'Donnell 1/31/2015 Sometimes a movie makes a lasting impression on you as an individual, sometimes you'll come back to this movie time and time again. LA Confidential (1997) is a combination of a star studded cast and a scintillating detective story set in the 50's. The movie combines all aspects of movie making, from acting, directing, writing, mise en scene and all sorts of film techniques to make one of the most entertaining noir's you'll ever see. LA Confidential (1997) is directed by Curtis Hanson, he doesn't have this prolific history of stunning movies like some other directing heavy weights but he handles an a-list cast and directing duties admirably here. While most of the big names in the cast weren't technically BIG names yet they must have still had personalities or needed work to get the job done. Notably at least to me is Kim Basinger, someone who usually I do not enjoy, usually a weak point in movies for me, but in this she is perfectly fine, nothing to much, but not noticeable like usual, a feat in directing to me. The cast is name after name, Russel Crowe as the ham fisted Officer Bud White, Kevin Spacey playing the mercurial Detective Jack Vincennes, Guy Pearce in my eyes as his break out performance playing the golden child Ed Exley. You have a plethora of famous character actors to back these boys up, David Strathairn as...

It was supposed to show the transition of a girl becoming a woman by falling in love with someone no one saw as her equal, according to society. Although the movie was made 25 years ago, it still brings a good message to the audiences that watch it. It has become a classic movie that no amount of technology could change. It takes so much to make a movie, and no one realizes it, but in this paper, it’s going to analyze what made Dirty Dancing become such a classic movie. Storytelling The narrative structure of the movie is told from Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman’s point of view as it was the summer she fell in love. The storytelling in Dirty Dancing is told in chronological order because she sees the dancers, wants to be one, then the female dancing lead, Penny Johnson, became pregnant. Baby fills in for her and Johnny teaches her dance in her place. The story takes place at Kellerman’s country club where she goes on vacation for the summer with her family.
