I have always enjoyed English classes and writing. After taking the English 101 course here, I felt like my writing skills had improved and matured greatly along, helping with my transition to college and more advanced writing. Now, through completing English 102, I feel like my writing and research skills have improved even more and I feel better prepared for the writing and research tasks that await me. In this portfolio, I hope to demonstrate how my writing has improved through this class and how I have successfully met the learning outcomes of the course, using one of my projects to show this. For ENG 102, we were assigned to research a topic we were interested in and to write a persuasive research paper on the topic. I chose to research …show more content…
Through this course, we had many different assignments regarding research that helped me better understand the research process and tools that are available to me. The research portfolio that we were assigned to do was probably the biggest help with this. It helped me learn the different components that went into research, how to make it easier, and how to properly analyze the usefulness of a source. This project made finding valuable sources for the research paper much easier. Before this course, I had never had to conduct research for an assignment in college. The lesson we had on researching through the library and spending a class in the library doing research taught me how valuable the library was as a research tool and the different resources that are available. By doing these activities, I was able to find reliable sources of different types for my research paper that helped back up my thesis. In the first few weeks of this course, we spent a lot of time reading different texts and analyzing them and their meanings. This was even further developed through our critical response and synthesis essay assignments. These helped me to critically evaluate different texts and how the different ideas they contain can be expanded

English 101 Reflection

...I took my time reviewing the feedback provided on my first submitted essay for English 101. I noticed several positive areas in my writing. The first area is having the ability to provide readers with good, well placed examples throughout the essay. The second area of strength is grammar. This is an area that can use improvement however, it is at an advancing level. The best part about receiving feedback is being given a chance to learn from a mistake. A few areas I learned I need to focus on improving would be to state a clear and concise thesis statement letting my readers know exactly what my main point is and what to expect in my paper. I also need to avoid using a passive voice. By writing in a passive voice my essay was wordy and at times...

Course Reflection

...Course Reflection Upon reflection, I attach honesty and thoughtfulness to this part as I seek to gain my Degree in Hospital Medical Reimbursement and Coding. As I reread my words, I recalled the much anticipation and interest I had for studying this course. During my first days as a student, I always tensed when exams approached and more so when an exam had a project that required presentation in front of a panel and a vast audience.Public speaking was because my greatest weakness was public speaking and also because my command of English language was wanting. This course, ENGL 101 has enhanced my communication skills, and public speaking is no more weakness to me, Hargie (2006). This course also has improved my thought process, I now know how to handle the mismatch between thought speed and speaking. This mismatch is potentially detrimental when I express myself. I have also become perfect in the command of English language, and use of words in the misappropriate context in my medical career is no more an issue to me. This experience I have gained is of the essence in my career, as I practice medical coding and reimbursement. Due to the command of English, I will avoid unnecessary grammatical errors that might lead to bad coding habits and eventually cripple the medical coding system. Also, I have been made to understand meanings of certain words in different contexts, and this is a plus in my career. Again I will act professionally and ethically as I know...

...Quintae Dorsey July 24th, 2013 English 101 Joshua Thusat Reflection Essay When I enrolled into my English 101 class I thought passing the class would be very easy. Previously, I had taken an English 101 class at my old University and received an “A”, so I was highly confident that I would excel in all of my assignments without concerns; I was very mistaken. Every essay that I have done, (except learning logs) I had to re-do because of flaws in my writing. I didn’t believe I had any flaws in my writing when first starting the course, which made me oblivious to my errors. I am so relieved that I didn’t proceed to English 102 without taking this course. Enrolling in this class has helped me grow as a writer. By understanding my strong areas and what areas I need to work on, I feel more confident writing my essays. Not only did I grow as a writer, I really enjoyed the environment of the classroom. I always felt positive energy from not only my teacher, but my peers as well. It made my learning experience enjoyable yet very informal. I absolutely loved that the classroom is very diverse; full of people from various countries with different outlooks on life. I appreciated hearing everyone’s opinions about certain topics, and the respect everyone showed one another when speaking about sensitive subjects such as racism. Having a respectable teacher and classmates really made the tone of our class worth being a part of. At my previous university I had classes with at least two hundred...

You were very distracted during your ENGL 101 class last Friday; you have talked with your instructor about you failing it. I know that you are trying to solve your problems by yourself; however, I think that at this point you need help from our tutors to keep you focused on completing your assignments. You need to come to Achieve and work for at least 20 hours a week to make up all the points you have missed so far. Education and Social Class

...Mauricio Valle English 101, Evans Correlation between Social Class & Education Today, criticism exists between the correlation between social class division and linguistics which suggest to a reflection of United States’ educational system. Presently in the U.S. the controversy lies between society, where a fine line that divides and correlates education and social class. Samuel Bowles and Herbert Gintis, a group of scholar researchers, concluded in their article Bowles and Gintis on Schooling in the United States that being born into a specific social class could potentially determine the future of a person’s academic potential, life goal achievements, and more specifically their respective social class. In my opinion, however, education and linguistics do not adhere to predictive social classes. Education and more specifically linguistics are being suggested as an inferiority of our school system. What is known as Ebonics or AAE (African American English) is widely used though out the modern United States; not only AAE is used today but other forms of slang like those used in Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and other social media. Geneva Smitherman and others also suggest certain dialects such as AAE do not reflect nor lack control over education, but it is rather an enriched language of diverse cultures. Moreover Bowles and Gintis argue that students’ “lack of control over his or her education” reflect their respective social class. According to Basil Bernstein, another...

I Will Never Forget

...Javaris McClenton Ms.Ravick ENG104 22 April 2015 Reflection During my first year of college, I have made things for me way harder then they had to be. Specifically in my spring semester of college when I began to take the class of English Composition 1. Taught by the brilliant and marvelous Ms. Ravick, English Comp. 1 was by far my toughest class of the semester. Throughout my semester of English Comp. 1 I have gain the enjoyment of writing essays, coming up with my own ideas, and stop repeating my writing when I write essays. Coming into English 101 freshman year was something that I was kinda afraid of. In high school English class never served as my strong point and I found myself constantly frustrated and confused as to why I never got the grade I felt I deserved. I would write essays to get it over with, using other people’s thoughts and ideas to support my less important thoughts and ideas about the subject. I never felt connected with any papers that I was asked to write and it showed, so coming into college being forced to do it all over again was definitely something I feared and something I wanted to get over with, but now I find myself enjoying writing. I have always written freely or on my own, but I find myself now able to sit down and enjoy writing an essay again. I enjoy the process of coming up with my own ideas and concepts and trying to make an argument for my reader so they can also take my side in that argument. With this class, I have learned to enjoy...

Samuola Work

...Samuola Vernet Professor Amanda Weir English 100 11/26/12 Academic Literacies Project Sociology is the study of social behavior and the socio-cultural settings in which it occurs. It involves the study of whole societies and their basic institutions as well as smaller scale groups such as the family, peer group and neighborhood. (Undergraduate Programs University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. n.d) By examining different social groups in economic, political and religious contexts, the effects on human attitudes, actions and opportunities can be discovered. With the understanding of sociology in mind I expect the academic literacy workload for sociology to require a lot of reading and writing. Examining human behavior demands a lot of analyzing and research. When analyzing a text it is expected that the author reasoning will be looked for. To fully comprehend a text when reading one must take good notes, summarize and/or paraphrase the main idea. A sociology course requires a lot of precise thinking and reflection. By doing so the text is questioned and allows thoughts about personal emotions and affects as well as whether it connects text to text, self or world or another text. In an informal discussion with an upperclassman in philosophy, I was told that there will be two types of assigned papers study and theory. A thesis is needed when writing a theory paper. Theory papers tend to have readers think and evaluate them critically and address the issue of how...

My Literacy Background Reflection Paper

...Smith 1 Smith English 101 10 December 2008 My Literacy Background Reflection Paper When I think of revising a paper I usually think of making minor changes to grammar, spelling, and other more rudimentary changes. This time though I am challenged to not only make those type of familiar changes but now I need to make a more in depth analysis into the thesis and content, development, and expression of my literacy background paper. For me this is a real challenge because of my past struggles with literacy. For my literacy background paper the most important changes that needed to be made was to content and development. My instructor requested that I make some grammatical changes, shorten and summarize long quotes, and expand on main points and provide more examples. First, in reference to grammar and other rules of writing I did not make many errors. The first two pages were pretty clean. On page three I used the word “to” instead of “on”, as the instructor suggested, when referring to an effect on me from others. I find that I tend to make this mistake a lot. I need to focus more on areas I tend to need the most work on so I do not continue to make the same mistakes. If I don’t my readers will only continue to get the wrong message from my writing. Also, my usage of quoting words used in speech was left out. I should have correctly quoted the words Bruddah and brother, like “Bruddah” and “brother”. It is apparent that I need to work harder to make sure I improve...
