Throughout the course of my English 102 class, there have been many attributing factors that have not only geared me toward meeting the course objectives but have challenged and strengthened my analytical and critical thinking skills. My portfolio highlights these acquired skills through two outside of class essays, which required two completely different styles of writing. Another key element that has helped to illustrate the writing process for the two essays in my portfolio was the use of reading various types of literature. This included but was not limited to, editorials, newspaper articles, books, and specific disciplines of research in course related fields. These two essays essentially reshaped my ability to write for specific audiences …show more content…
Realizing the need for being versatile in my writing was the first step in this process. The essay entitled “A Perfectly Imperfect Decision,” an argumentative essay, became the bases for learning to support my opinion with aspects from a novel. This became especially challenging in terms of trying to analytically defend and justify the decision of one of the main characters, despite the surface level analyses that the character was “wrong” for her decision. Developing a personal position that was rooted and supported by evidence from the text also helped to strengthen my ability to discern the appropriate voice needed in an argumentative essay. Argumentative essays should not only include a position on the topic, but it should also use emotional and logical appeals directed toward countering the opposing argument. Since originally submitting the paper I’ve made stylistic revisions including, not posing rhetorical questions that I leave unanswered which suggest a different style of writing such as a magazine or something less formal than an academic

Previously, I had taken an English 101 class at my old University and received an “A”, so I was highly confident that I would excel in all of my assignments without concerns; I was very mistaken. Every essay that I have done, (except learning logs) I had to re-do because of flaws in my writing. Suddenly, an alarm viciously roars filling the room with its intense growl. In an attempt to tame it, I grab hold of my calm comforter and barricade myself within it. This study was designed to investigate the use of English-subtitled K-Pop MV in exploring students’ extensive reading ability. In this case study, five students, four girls and one boy, were selected. To collect the data, document analysis and an in-depth interview were conducted. The findings showed in comprehending the song, the students’ interpretations were still shallow and relying heavily on summary of narrative with very low-level inference. Meanwhile in vocabulary acquisition, it helped their better understanding wider range vocabulary, either in English or Korean. In addition, using K-Pop for learning English was more interesting and enjoyable, it is also motivating.
