Reflection

...Kali Mitchell English 1101 Professor Elliott 7 December 2012 Reflective Final Essay This first semester of my freshman has been a very interesting trip. I have learned so much in the short amount of time that I have spent here at Kennesaw State University. I feel as if I have grown, not only as a student, but as a person as well. I have met many new people, made many new friends, and learned many new things especially in my English 1101 class. I thought I knew everything there was to know about writing when I came in on my first day, but I was very wrong. My professor assured me that there is much more to writing than just putting words down on paper. Knowing all of this, I have now learned how to improve on my writing skills, how to write better grammatically correct sentences, incorporate quotes and research and give as well as get criticism. When I came into this semester as a freshman I was very confident in the quality of my writing. However, my self-esteem was soon crushed shortly thereafter. Even though my writing skills had been very good compared to my classmates in high school, at the university level they were just average. After hearing about the on average grades students get in professor Elliott’s class, I knew I had a lot of work to do to receive an A on a paper. I had to do something quick to learn how improve on my writing skills. With the help of my teacher, she made us a read a variety of articles that were very interesting, yet also very insightful...

First Experience in Enc 1101

...Alejandro Lopez  Professor Walter Hernandez  ENC 1101 April 18th, 2012 “My First Experience in ENC 1101” ENC 1101 is one of the most difficult and rewarding classes that I've taken, especially because I chose to take it during my first semester of college. It is a general requirement for every student at MDC and is geared to help those who aspire to become a professional graduate one-day. Since I picked ENC 1101 to be one of my first semester college classes, it's been a difficult course for me. My lack of grammar knowledge, experience writing essays and organizing ideas are the three factors that made this college class challenging. Even though it's been hard on me, I now know how to write essays the right way and also how to organize my ideas so I have a clear vision of what I'll be writing about. This is really important to me because learning how to write properly will not only help me pass ENC 1101, but it will help succeed in other classes, life, and my future career.   My ENC 1101 Professor Walter Hernandez not only motivated us to become better writers but also shared with us important tips regarding how to write like a college writer. He would always have a positive attitude, making the class amusing and enjoyable. The first week of school, Professor Hernandez showed the class "The ENC 1101 Survival Guide" which is a document containing essays written by Miami Dade College students that represent how his students made it through his class by becoming better...

A World Divided

...Louis 1 Ansley Louis Professor Matthew McEver English Composition 1101 September 20, 2015 A World Divided The crystal blue waterfalls and crystalized sand shimmered as it fell through our hands. Beautiful people came from around the world to glimpse famous people visiting the island, or to get away from the hardship and stress of their everyday lives. As for me, I saw the poverty of Nassau, Bahamas. Desperate people crowded the straw market and stared across the bridge at Atlantis where vacationers slept in Mahogany furnished rooms with luxurious bedding. Why did the residents have to live the way they do, sleeping on dirt floors? Into the night, the brilliant lights of Atlantis became a world miles away, but out of grasp. We approached the market eager to do some local shopping. Hundreds of vendors brought everything they created to start their marketing line. We live in the U.S., where items are ready-made and disposable, and, if something breaks, we buy a new one. I began thinking about my Michael Kors sunglasses that I had broken on the boat and how I was going to order a new pair when I arrived home. This venue, this world I walked into, was a world that required thought and imagination, of taking the very least commodity they had and turning it into a marketable item to sell, not for the latest technological device or new shoes, but to put food on the table. It humbled me immensely. Louis 2 I approached an elderly man, who looked to be about eighty years...

Personal Narrative: My Writing

...English 1101 has been a really great class so far. I have learned a lot about myself as a writer. I have found that I tend to write in first person more than I should. It is not always bad to write that way, but it is not the most formal way to write. When I write I have to concentrate on not using pronouns such as I, me, and myself. I have learned that writing is not as easy as I thought it was. Writing takes time and planning. To have a nice, well written paper, I have to take time to go though it a few times to check for mistakes and errors. The biggest challenge for me so far has been time management. I am in high school and I tend to remember homework for my physical classes better than this one. I also have a part-time job and volunteer two to three times a week. Both of these things tend to get in my way when...

Literacy Narrative: Biomedical Engineering Class

...Krina Patel Ms. Cherney English 1101 14 September 2015 Literacy Narrative As a child, I always wanted to become a doctor. “What kind of doctor” was the question I asked myself? I was about to start my senior year of high school, but still asked myself the same question. However, senior year in my Biomedical Engineering class I was told each week I had to research an article that was somehow related to the class. I had to read the research/article thoroughly, write a three to four page research paper and present my findings in front of the class. At first I wasn’t so eager about the assignment, because not only I hate writing but also reading. However by doing these research papers helped me shape my career aspiration and also helped prepare me for college level research papers. The first article I read that grabbed my attention was “Thoughts Control Robotic Hands”. The article talked about how a group of researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have implanted an array of electrodes into the motor cortex of a patient’s brain enabling...

Phobia

...English 1101 I Search Paper December 5, 2011 You and a friend are walking in the woods. Your friend sees a trail that leads to a flowing river with cool, refreshing rapids. Your friend suggests that you jump in the river with him. You suddenly feel your heart pound a million beats per minute, sweat begins to run down your neck, you feel slightly faint than before, and then you instantly run away. You are running and find yourself lost in the woods with nowhere to go. You began to think, “if only I would have stayed by the river with my friend” but by that time you are too far away to even try to find your way back. As you stand in the middle of the forest watching the sun go down your mind wanders off into thoughts about last summer. You see the water cover your brother’s head as your mom pulls you away saying “baby he’s gone we have to save you!” You fight your mom trying to reach for your brother but you get pulled away instead. You begin to hear what seems like your alarm clock. You wake up and realize that you just had a terrible nightmare but what happened seemed so real. It scared you so much and you can’t even begin to think about going near water again. The story you just read is not true, but it does describe the experience of phobias. A phobia is the sensation of extreme fear when it’s not justified by the presence of any real danger or threat, or by any rational cause, and when it is accompanied by a systematic avoidance of the situations that leads to it."(White...

Equity and Equality

...Youssef Haddad Professor Black English 1101 9 Nov 2013 Equality Vs. Equity: People and The Law Throughout the history of mankind and specially in modern times, many struggles emerged from people’s suppressed anger and hatred of the feudalism and the ruling monopolistic powers, and in their effort to create a system most suitable to their wants and desires and what they take as “values” and “rights” they stumbled on what is to this very day one of the most important and complicated dilemmas of human philosophy: how do we choose between equality and equity? What is the better choice? Do we prefer similarity or justice? And many questions as such, and as other ideas and ideologies go, it remains a major dispute among masses and masses of workers, farmers, countrymen as well as land owners, businessmen and politicians alike, and in many ways it is quite normal, the essence of both those ideas appear the same and are often put in the same category, but in reality they very far from each other on many levels and points of view and they represent systems that do show resemblance but are almost entirely different in functionality and order. Research Compiled for the Paper Store Enterprises Inc

...“English as a global language, and the concepts of Self and Other” Research compiled for The Paper Store Enterprises Inc By Jani Liggins, October 2011 For More Information On How To Use This Report Correctly, Please Visit www.paperwriters.com/aftersale.htm There are two ways in which the concept of English as an international language might be approached, with reference to the need for efficient global communication and the issue of Self and Other, in terms of both individual and national identity, which Edward Said addresses. On the one hand, one could reasonably assert that there is a necessity for a global language, and several valid justifications for that language being English. For example, with the advent of the new technology and global communication, it is evident that national barriers are being dissolved and there is a much greater degree of interaction between different countries, both on a personal and a corporate level. From this point of view, it is clear that the method of communication which is employed should be one that is familiar to all, even though this does not in itself mean that the individuals concerned would need to sacrifice their original methods of communication in order to participate in a global one. In many countries, the second language which is taught in schools is English: in addition, most Europeans already have English as a second language, and in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres...

An Analytical Research Report on the Demographic Comparison of Student Retention at Erau

...The goal of this research paper is to show the impact that demographic factors have on student retention at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Daytona Beach). Our school has tried its best to improve its retention numbers these past ten years by implementing diverse programs geared towards keeping students in school. These programs were built using data provided by the Institutional Research department (IR) on our campus; the IR wishes to see whether student variables can predict retention. This document analyses the data collected from the IR and recent research related to individual student demographic characteristics such as gender, nationality and majors. I was born in San Francisco but raised in Senegal, a francophone West African country. I attended a French school and a bilingual one during my time there because my parents wanted me to be fluent and proficient in their languages (my mother’s first language is English and my dad’s is French). My background can only be beneficial into conducting such a research. I, for one, definitely understand the repercussions that demographics can have on a society or, in this case, a University. Anyone that knows a little bit about our campus can give at least three facts about it: the ratio of boy to girl is pretty big (5 to 1); the two main colleges are the Aviation and Engineering ones(76% altogether); and there are lots of international students (16% of student body). The retention rate at Embry-Riddle is 79%. The demographics...

...Santiago Torres Dr. Billie Jones English 1101-23 1/20/14 Misleading 100 As usual, I sauntered in the hallway, dreading getting to my American literature class. Mrs. Fisher announced to the class, “Your next assignment is a research paper on an individual that had a great impact on Black History.” As soon as I heard the announcement, my heart beat increased and my palms began to sweat. Literally, I dropped my face on my desk and whispered, “God help us all; I’m about to fail this class.” I had a gut feeling that the assignment was going to be difficult and time consuming. Immediately I imagined the many hours that I would have to assert on the assignment, and the thought depressed me. Little did I know that doing the assignment would bring me one of the greatest surprises of my academic life and taught me that the writing process can’t be rushed. Mrs. Fisher paced back and forth in front of the class room as she explained how someone inspired her to become a teacher. At some point I stopped listing and was on the verge of dozing off. Suddenlty my attention snapped back to her as her words “I get to assign you the person to do this essay on” pushed themselves into my consciousness. Up this point I had thought that we can pick our own person and had settle on Martin Luther King, Jr. Mrs. Fisher proceed to assing different historical figures to different students while the fear of not getting MLK creeped over me. Finally, Mrs. Fisher said,”Santiago Torres, MLK.” For the first...

Factors Influencing Consumers Towards Flats and Lands

...1970 to 1990, the average annual growth rate of urban population was 6.5 per cent for Bangladesh, 3.4 per cent for India and 4.2 per cent for both Pakistan and Sri Lanka (Hugo, 1992). Currently the population growth rate in Bangladesh and Pakistan is 1.6%, in India and Sri Lanka it is 1.3% and 0.9% respectively (worldstat.info). The rate of urbanization is estimated to be 5-6% annually for Bangladesh (REHAB, 2004). About 25% of the people of Bangladesh is now living in urban areas and 34% will be living by 2015 (REHAB, 2004) and 50% by 2025 (Singha D., 2001). Among the Asian countries Bangladesh is the fourth largest with the population of 142 million (BBS 2011), but in terms of the density of population Bangladesh ranked fifth where 1101 people live in a square kilometer. Increased population growth generally represents problems for a country – because of increased need for food, cloths, accommodation, infrastructure, and services. Being a least developed country like Bangladesh, it is hardly possible to deal with the complex problems of allocating scarce resources among the competing needs. More so, the problem is very much accelerated by the migrating population approaching the large cities for job and vocation. Thus, the incremental population create a permanent accommodation problem as to share very limited...
