The ongoing debate over gay marriage bothers people in many ways. Marriage has always been defined as a legal binding between one woman and one man that is recognized by law and involves certain legal, social rights and duties. Marriage in my eyes should be defined as a legal binding between any two people who are in love, whether it is two men or two women. It is not written anywhere in stone that a man is made for a woman and vice versa. I think that there is somebody for everybody and many people may not find that in the opposite sex. Same sex couples are treated as if they are not citizens when they are just like the rest of us. I’m not into women but I think that we were all created equals and should be treated the same way. We should all be given the same privileges and rights. No matter what life we choose to live, we should all be able to express our love to the person we choose to spend our lives with through marriage without any restrictions.
Marriage has been defined as a legal binding between one woman and one man. That definition of marriage is unfair to many same sex couples because they are not given the right to legally marry the person who they have chosen to spend their life with. So many people think they choosing to be with a person of the same sex is morally wrong, but same sex couples may feel as if being with someone of the opposite sex is wrong. Everyone has a different outlook on life and nobody should be forced to be with someone who they don’t want to be with because there is so much discrimination in the world.
Although marriage has been given a definition my outlook on marriage is totally different than what the definition says. The word marriage has been given such a narrow definition when the title is so broad.

Universities have faced a number of changes over the years with regards to who should fund Higher Education (HE). This debate is still very active and a number of papers have been written as to whether HE should be government funded or paid for by the student. The Government took recommendations from the Dearing report, first published in 1997 that HE should be funded via an alternative route and not by Grants from the government. Since the original report was published the fees have now reached £9000 per year which was introduced in the 12/13 academic year. Students however aren’t expected to pay the cost of their fees back until they are earning a minimum of £21,000 per annum. It is said that Higher Education matters for the economic growth of the country...

Gender and Diversity in the Workplace

...forms of diversity include ones physical appearance, sex, race, age, ethnicity, speech patterns and language. Those that are nonvisible include characteristics such as religion, national origin, illness and sexual orientation (Clair 2005). When discussing diversity in the work environment, most often times they are discussing the outward, visible characteristics, however invisible social identities are common in the workplace. Gender is one of the most common viewed issues when looking at diversity in the workplace. The glass ceiling and equality issues are analyzed and discussed frequently. Discoveries have been made that support the idea that woman should be on more Boards and should be making more decisions on allocations of monies. This paper seeks to address how diversity impacts an organization and how managers can make diversity work for them.   Introduction According to Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, and Konopaske (2012), Diversity is a term that describes the cultural, ethnic and racial differences in a population. A more comprehensive definition by Gibson et al (2012) indicates that diversity is “an array of physical and cultural differences that constitute the spectrum of human attributes. There are six dimensions of diversity which include: age, ethnicity, gender, physical attributes, race, and sexual/affectional orientation” (50). All of these elements ultimately have a strong effect on an individual’s behavior and attitudes. The six characteristics listed...

Business Communication Between People with Different Cultural Backgrounds

...communication increases drastically and in recent years many researchers have emphasised the importance of awareness of different cultural norms as globalisation has brought about a growing trend to communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds. This paper argues for a revaluation of how we approach the topic of business communication and for greater emphasis on successful business communication as the goal of better understanding in global business setting. The ideas which are presented in this paper have been derived over a period of two years of our own research and through the reading of research literature. The research to be discussed in the paper is connected to one of the major research lines at Széchenyi István University, titled The dialogue of professional, organisational and national cultures. The purpose of the present paper is to present the results of a survey conducted with professionals who communicate with foreign business partners. The data were gathered by means of a questionnaire. At the root of the argument is the hypothesis that communication rules and norms between people with different cultural background have altered and different cultures have differing values, perceptions and philosophies. The paper will conclude that individuals working in international business setting are affected by more than one culture at a time − even if by varying amounts – and special attention should be devoted...

...The Office Art Memo The Office Art Memo “Memorandum” Mario Williams Professor Alan Rodgers Humanities 112 8/15/11 Having to consider the choices both impressionist and post-impressionist, I have come to a decision. Three works from the impressionist period and three works from the post-impressionist period would be the best choice to make. I will deal with impressionist works in the paper first by identifying the impressionist and post-impressionist works. Then I will describe the choices of the painting to present to the CEO of my company with examples for my decision. While including examples why my choices fit the company’s image, I will a give a clear explanation. Keyword: Impressionist, post-impressionist, impressionism. The first painting is historically significant because it was one of the works that helps define impressionism on early work. It displays all the hallmark of impressionism. The second painting Boulevard des Capucines, painted by Claude Monet in 1873, is significant because its perspective was looking out from the first impressionist exhibition. This shows the marketplace of French impressionism. This place is where the painting is not born. However, it is where the movement first became known. In other words, it is the birthplace of the movement. This painting is significant because it shows the outline altogether. An important element of traditional painting that yet shows...

...War of Independence 1857 and the Role of Urdu and Persian Newspapers Dr. Seemi Naghmana Tahir ∗ & Dr. Munir Ahmed Baloch ∗∗ Abstract Much has been written on the causes and consequences of the War of Independence 1857, as one of the most significant events of the history of Subcontinent. Both historians and fiction writers have drawn conclusions from diverse perspectives of the War. But still many of its facets seem to be enveloped in ambiguity. The role of press during the War is one of those dimensions which still need further exploration and analysis by the researchers and historians of today. This paper seeks to develop a causal relationship between the difference in Hindu-Muslim stance during the War and the role of Urdu and Persian newspapers in shaping the public opinion in general, and of Muslims of India in particular. The paper would also focus on the British attitude and actions against the ‘Native Press’ during and after the War, as one of the indicators of the impact and strength of this press. The reflections of the contents of some important newspapers would also be included to help in analyzing this press as main representative or spokesman of the Muslims of Subcontinent. ∗ ∗∗ Professor of Mass Communication & Dean, Faculty of Education and Humanities, University of Balochistan, Quetta. Introduction According to Ennis (1985), “Critical thinking is reasonably and reflectively deciding what to believe or do". Critical thinking is "the art of thinking about your thinking while you are thinking in order to make your thinking better: more clear, more accurate, or more defensible", Paul, Binker, Adamson, and Martin (1989). Critical thinking is best understood as the ability of thinkers to take charge of their own thinking. This requires that they develop sound criteria and standards for analyzing and assessing their own thinking and routinely use those criteria and standards to improve its quality. According to Michael, "Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a...

Elias Boudinot: a Native American Pioneer

...the Anglo-European people of the United States. As the Anglo grip on the nation grew tighter, it became apparent that either you accept violence as your tribe’s only salvation, or you decide to accept whatever offer the ruling white class decided to offer your tribe, in hopes that your tribes willingness to abide by whatever rules and regulations imposed will eventually save your people from the fate of so many of your brothers and sisters across the country. No tribe personified this reality better than the Cherokee Nation of the Southeastern United States, and no one Cherokee Indian should be connected with the struggle of acculteration verses preservation than Elias Boudinot, the editor of the Cherokee Phoenix, the first Native American paper in the United States. As it will be revealed, Boudinot is one of the most controversial members of Cherokee history, a person whose sharp intellect and journalist ability set the standard for Native American newspapers throughout the country, but at the same time, was partly responsible for the eventual Cherokee relocation from their ancestral homeland. Elias Boudinot’s life and achievements is an almost parallel of the...

...fight back. By any means necessary.’ Arundhati Roy (2009a, p.160) ‘They use weapons, but they are not bloodthirsty. They are basically gentle, polite, highly civilized ... So when he kills, it is a necessary killing.’ Mahasweta Devi (2002, p.XXII) It would of course be a truism to say that we live in an increasingly violent world. Various populations live terror stricken lives, occupied by foreign powers, or fearing militant attacks – to mention just two easily observed realities. To put it somewhat differently, different political agents, different agents seeking to change or perpetuate the ordering of society, seem to be increasingly reaching out to violence as a tool for achieving their purposes. India, the primary concern of this paper, too, is convulsed by an increasing spiral of violence. Kashmir remains one of the most heavily militarised zones in the world1; pitched battles continue to be fought in the ‘North-East’; Hindu2 and Muslim extremists carry out terrorist strikes in the country; and the CPI-Maoists3, one of over thirty underground Communist parties waging war against the Indian state4, is met by a Government that arms civilians to fight them5 and also sends in various security forces for its ‘Operation Green Hunt’. The list could go on for some time. And this without considering the fact that all major political parties in India work with their own goons, and/or are associated with some. Yet, in political debates in various news channels or opinion pieces...

Joan of Arc

...God. Voices or no voices, her achievements leave anyone who knows her story shaking his head in amazed wonder.’ Joan was born into a poor common family in the peasant village of Domrémy in the French province of Lorraine in 1412. She grew up a simple but unusually devout farm child during the height of the Hundred Years’ War. Disaster after disaster befell her native France -- the English invaders and their Burgundian allies conquered and occupied the northern half of France including Paris. Dauphin Charles VII, the rightful but un-crowned king of France, set up the remnants of his royal court at the town of Chinon. From here, this weak monarch of questionable competence tried to rule over the unoccupied rump of France. Starting in May, 1428, Joan, claiming that God was directing her through the saints, repeatedly approached the regional governor demanding that he send her to Charles at Chinon. She insisted that it was her divinely ordered mission to take charge of the French army, defeat the English, and escort Charles to Rheims to have him properly crowned king. In October 1428, the English and Burgundians began their siege of the city of Orléans, their last obstacle before overrunning the rest of France. In...

Lexical Cohesion in the Translated Novels of Naguib

... The paper aims at examining how lexical cohesion is achieved in Naguib Mahfouz’s novel The Thief and The Dogs and how the translators have dealt with this device in the translated version. The paper compares lexical cohesive devices in this novel and in its English version. It is also an attempt to test two hypotheses that account for the degree of explicitness in the translated text as compared to the source text: the Explicitation Hypothesis and the Stylistic Preference Hypothesis. Both Aziz (1998) and Obeidat (1998) adopt the Stylistic Preference Hypothesis which attributes explicitness or implicitness to Stylistic preference of the target language. The Explicitation Hypothesis is shown to offer a more appropriate explanation for the way lexical cohesion is rendered in the target language. 0. Introduction Cohesion is defined “as the set of possibilities that exist in the language for making text hang together: the potential that the speaker or writer has at his disposal.” (Halliday and Hasan 1976:18). Halliday and Hasan (1976) identify several devices that are used as cohesive devices the function of which is to tie a text together. The cohesive devices fall into five types: reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. (1) This paper focuses on one cohesive...
