Critical Analysis-Poetry
The poem, “The Classroom” seems to be a student that is sitting class. The words chosen to describe the setting were, class, teacher, and cap and gown. She appears to have a goal which is to graduate school. She seems determined and focused to finish school. It appears that she is in the room sitting down observing her classmates and what they are doing at the moment. It was mention that the kids are loud and don’t really listen to the teacher. She may want to become friends with the others in the class, but shy and don’t like the loudness of others. Also, she might be frustrated with the others in the class because she is attentive in class and they are not. They are on their phones, talking, and not paying the teacher attention. She is eager to learn and wants to pass her classes. She might have positive hope for her class and wants them to feel like she feels about her education.
The poem, “All in one day” took place in a school building. She seems like she is the teacher and explaining what all goes on in her day. She mentions pollen in the air and kids pushing and shoving in one door. Which makes the reader thinks it is spring time and school has begun. She enters the room and the kids are asking for things before she can get settled in the class. She then mentions “the monster is here”. This phrase lets me to thinks that she could be speaking about her principal or someone in authority over her. She doesn’t like this person very well because she is forging a fake smile. She doesn’t like speaking to her nor does she care for her to well. She ignores her and responds rather mean to her superior. A few references were made using nursery rhymes like, I’ll huff and puff and blow her house down.” She wants to fight her, but can’t because of the students that are around. She also might

...Not Your Typical Fast Food Restaurant Looking at a McDonald’s, many people probably think of it as just a decent place to pick up a quick, cheap meal. In some cases, this is true. McDonald’s is one of the most widely known and popular fast food restaurants around the world. However, McDonald’s can be a satisfying meal to grab on the go or even to relax and enjoy some people watching. This type of place is perfect to find many different kinds of people to observe. This may not be a place for a romantic date. However, there are not too many places you can go have a dinner with your family with the bill coming out to be under twenty dollars. Sure most of the food may be unhealthy, but it is the cheapest and most efficient route to satisfying your appetite. This may be why McDonald’s has become such a powerful food chain. But after visiting the Oxford McDonald’s, I realized the many different features that make this restaurant so attracting to people. Around lunchtime, I walked across the parking lot, and I noticed the drive through was packed with people just waiting to get their meals and get on the road. I walked inside the doors of the McDonald’s, passed the cashier, and took a seat in one of the booths in the dining area. The booths were big and comfortable and they were all along walls of the dining area. This area was designated for people that wanted to sit down and enjoy their meals. People...

English 112 Position Paper

...| Position Paper | Deirdra Coleman | English 112 | Professor Carl Jean | 6/21/2012 | Pages 1-6 | The ongoing debate over gay marriage bothers people in many ways. Marriage has always been defined as a legal binding between one woman and one man that is recognized by law and involves certain legal, social rights and duties. Marriage in my eyes should be defined as a legal binding between any two people who are in love, whether it is two men or two women. It is not written anywhere in stone that a man is made for a woman and vice versa. I think that there is somebody for everybody and many people may not find that in the opposite sex. Same sex couples are treated as if they are not citizens when they are just like the rest of us. I’m not into women but I think that we were all created equals and should be treated the same way. We should all be given the same privileges and rights. No matter what life we choose to live, we should all be able to express our love to the person we choose to spend our lives with through marriage without any restrictions. Marriage has been defined as a legal binding between one woman and one man. That definition of marriage is unfair to many same sex couples because they are not given the right to legally marry the person who they have chosen to spend their life with. So many people think they choosing to be with a person of the same sex is morally wrong, but same sex couples may feel as if being with someone of the opposite sex...

...Show her it is a man’s world Kathy Hernandez ENGL-112-61251 March 19, 2013 Professor: Julie Pal Show her it is a man’s world Show her it is a man's world makes sexism against women of the 1960's. This tie ad creates so much controversy because of the way that this ad was advertised. This ad is important in my opinion because it shows the evolution of women rights. Throughout those years women did not have any right and they were humiliated by men and were only allowed to be at home, to take care of the children, house and husband when he came from work. I am making this analysis to show how this ad uses logos, pathos and ethos to persuade people to buy the product. This ad use Pathos which involves using emotion to influence someone else. Emotional scenes and images are used to grab the men’s attention and often make them feel powerful and strong. This is demonstrated by how the man is sitting in bed, with a straight and firm posture, head held high, arms behind his head, well dressed with the “Van Heusen” tie and with a pleasant look on his face. The emotions that this ad conveys to man is to feel that they are above women and that by using the tie women will keep looking at them like all mighty kings. The woman is kneeling beside the bed, handing him a tray containing his breakfast in bed and she looks up to him with admiration treating him like a king in his castle. All of this just makes the target buyer (men) see that with this tie they will have women on...

English 112 Informative Essay

...Informative Essay Eng. 112 AUG 24, 2011 Rome: A City Drenched in Ruin and Splendor “Ah! The aroma of ‘Roma-the Eternal City!” Rome, known as the Eternal City even among the ancient Romans themselves, was so called because the Roman people thought that no matter what happened to the world, no matter how many other empires might rise and fall, Rome would go on forever (4Information.com). Indeed, Rome is over three thousand years old and has been the center of the universe for most of those years; it is also the home to the Pope where he is known as the “Bishop of Rome.” “For those who have visited her, it is unquestionably the most magnificent city in the world. Like the memory of a lost love, she will haunt you, stealing your senses one by one while hastening your return. For those who have not yet experienced her magic, the thrill awaits… (Roman Homes Website)” Rome is one of the most ancient and mystifying cities, full of majesty and splendor because it is a place of myth, antiquity, and spectacle. Rome is a city full of legend, history, and wonder. Its history includes classical myths of vengeful gods, blatant foolishness of Roman emperors, Bacchanalian excess around Renaissance courts while fast-forwarding to pompous Fascism during the reign of Mussolini in the twentieth century. Emperors, Popes and dictators have been at the forefront of domestic and international battles as they stamped out heresies while crushing infiltrating foes. As legend goes, Rome...

Arent We All Equal?

...Natalie Peguero English 112 Section 45 Prof. Mayers November 20, 2013 Aren’t we all equal? One of the most controversial topics today in America is immigration. Should they be deported? Or should they be given a chance for a better future? Immigrants go through abuse daily, they are treated unequal and as minority. Some immigrants’ are given the chance to work; they work hard but are treated and paid miserably. Even the health care provided to immigrants is sometimes cruel because of where they come from. Undocumented immigrants are abused all the time and because of their illegal crime the mistreatment is thought to be acceptable, but they aren’t the only ones that are being mistreated. Documented immigrants also go through harm of the government and society. Legal immigrants are treated different because of their inability of speaking English, or speaking with an accent. Many Americans’ seem to believe that just because somebody doesn’t speak English as they do, they don’t deserve to be treated as equal. In “Aria: Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood” by Richard Rodriguez you can see how he as child was treated different. Rodriguez being raised in Sacramento, California by Mexican Immigrants had difficulty with the English language and growing up in the society he lived in. Immigrants are mistreated in the daily basis just because of where they come from. They are unequally paid, made fun of, looked down on, treated differently and even those services that should be...

The English Language in Turkey – a Case Study of Linguistic Imperialism

...Cultural Studies Mr. Looi van Kessel, M.A. The English language in Turkey – A case study of linguistic imperialism English is considered to be the world’s lingua franca. It is the most extended language in all kinds of international interactions, including trade, culture, and academia. This is considered to be a factual statement and not a normative one. Certain scholars have considered the rise of English as a positive process in normative terms, while others have critiqued it as a form of imperialism. However, both sides of the argument agree on the principle that English is indeed the global language (Lin and Martin 116). The effects of English linguistic imperialism can be found in a plethora of countries, but they are mostly evident in countries that adopt official language policies to encourage the use of English in order to position themselves closer to the Western world. That is the case of Turkey which has favored English teaching and usage since the late 19th century (Doğançay-Aktuna and Kiziltepe 254-257). Furthermore, this official language policy and its consequences are most noticeable in academia, an environment where English has become an essential tool for participating in the international scientific community. This essay will discuss the case of Turkey as a country that has been directly impacted by English linguistic imperialism, resulting in a struggle between the economic benefits of expanding English usage, and the existence of a nationalist agenda for...

Global Effects of Unemployment

...Data Collection Project Topics Students in Sociolinguistics I are expected to choose from among these topics listed below. Why? Because it is difficult, as a beginning researcher who may never have conducted fieldwork before, to design a good project that will yield meaningful results and anticipate known pitfalls in one short academic quarter. (It’s much more important to design a good study than to conduct a novel study. So, it is fine to simply do one of these projects.) See what the syllabus has to say about the evaluation of this project here. If you really think you have a GREAT project idea, different from any below, that you want to pursue, you must obtain permission to do it. You will be asked to show that you really know: 1) your research question, 2) the limitations and advantages of your proposed methodology, 3) how your research is situated within a tradition of sociolinguistic research. General Calendar: The notations for WEEKS show a recommended schedule for working on the project without having a frantic rush at any one time. 1. WEEK 2: In class this week, you will choose a presentation. Carefully consider making your data collection project tied to this presentation. This is because you want to have a good understanding of some of the extant research on your topic around which you can structure your project. Previous research also gives you 1) good insight into how to narrow a topic of appropriate size for focused...

Philippine Englishes

...English and Englishes in the Philippines: A World Englishes Approach to MTBMLE Isabel Pefianco Martin, Ateneo de Manila University Abstract ! In the past two years since DepEd Order 74 (series 2009) was implemented, teacher training sessions have been conducted that focussed on the development of teaching strategies and the preparation of instructional materials for teaching in multilingual settings. One area of utmost concern among basic education teachers, and often a source of anxiety to both teachers and parents, is how to approach the teaching of English using the first language (L1). This presentation hopes to address these concerns by proposing a World Englishes (WE) approach to English language teaching (ELT) in the Philippines. Introduction ! Just recently, a college freshman who interviewed me for his research paper on mother-tongue based multilingual education (MTBMLE) asked why I supported its promotion even it meant possibly losing my job as an English teacher. The question did not surprise me as it was something that I often encountered whenever teachers, especially English teachers in Metro Manila, are confronted with this unfamiliar creature that is MTBMLE. ! To many stakeholders of the English language--lawmakers, school administrators, teachers, and parents--MTBMLE is perceived as a threat. It is specifically perceived to be anti-English. These perceptions may be traced to beliefs about English that may largely be considered as...

Learner Diversity Differences in Today’s Students T eachers begin their careers expecting to find classrooms like the ones they experienced when they were students. In some ways classrooms are the same. Students go to school to learn, but they also want to have fun and be with their friends. They expect to work but often need encouragement from their teachers. They’re typical kids. Classrooms are changing, however; the population of our schools is becoming increasingly diverse. Students come from different cultures and speak many different languages at home; they possess a range of abilities and talents; and issues involving differences between boys and girls are receiving increased attention. In this chapter we examine this diversity as we try to answer the following questions: ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ What is cultural diversity, and how does it influence student learning? How are the educational experiences of boys and girls different...

Factors of Study Habit

...MINUTE M. S. Thirumalai, Ph. D. This article may be read in three parts: the first part deals with the life and times of Lord Macaulay, and the second part presents Macaulay's Minute on Indian Education. The third part presents the objections raised against Macaulay's Minute by Prinsep, a Secretary who dealt with matters of education in the government then. This third part presents also the orders issued by William Bentinck, the then Governor General, that upheld Macaulay's Minute, and a discussion on the identity of views held by Ram Mohun Roy and Macaulay. I believe that Macaulay's Minute is better understood and appreciated if we have some understaning of the man who wrote it. Macaulay was an extra-ordinary administrator, master of English prose, and statesman. Remember Macaulay was writing his Minute nearly 175 years ago. 1. A BRIEF SOJOURN, AN ENDURING IMPACT Lord Macaulay (Thomas Babington Macaulay) was born on October 25, 1800, and died on December 28, 1859. He arrived in India (Madras) on 10th June 1834 as a member of the Supreme Council of India. William Bentinck was the then Governor General. He returned to England early 1838, and resumed his writing career there. Macaulay was in India, thus, only for nearly four years, but he was destined to impact the lives of millions of Indians forever. 2. MACAULAY'S FAMILY Lord Macaulay's father Zachary Macaulay himself had seen overseas service in the West Indies and Sierra Leone, and was highly regarded for his contribution to...
