Response to a Poem

The poem from our text book, “The Boxer” written by Paul Simon and Bruce Woodley is a

ballad. This ballad is about a young boy leaving home for the first time and is on his own. You

will learn about a young boy who left his home and family to live his life as a man. As he begins

his journey into adulthood he found it hard to find a job in the big city. During his journey all the

doors that lead to trouble and a ruff life was open to him but all the doors that lead to the

correct way of life for him seemed to be close but he continue to complete his journey to become a man that could be respected by his family. The part that sticks out to me is the first verses of the poem “Still, a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest”. These one verse reminds me about the decisions I made when I was out on my own becoming an adult, I had so many people trying to get me to do the wrong thing because it looked cool but I was able to hear what they was saying and disregard following the temptation and follow the road I needed to follow in order for me to do the right thing as a woman. Now we see the strong young man doing all he can to find a job but he gets no offers but the offers of the street life as the whores of the streets offer themselves to him. This is another trap to get him to make the wrong choice again but the young man would fall for the bait because he was so lonesome, this is a bait most men will always fall for because within your journey of adult hood you will fall into the arms of a woman just to fill the lonesome spot in your heart. But through it all you will see that he still strive and moves on to do better with his life. As he begins to get older he is still fighting his way to the position of a man because at the end of this

...Washington State may be well known for its camping. Fishing and its skiing in the mountain ranges or for the wide open space of the flat land, but Seattle and some of its businesses comes to everyone’s mind first. The two biggest companies from an employment point of view is Boeing and Microsoft, mainly due to the fact that there products are used by the largest group of people in the world. Out of those two companies’ the most well-known name is Bill Gates. Bill Gates came from a modest home in Seattle and while growing up he could of did what a lot of kids were doing back in those days, which was to follow in his father’s footsteps and became a lawyer, instead he went off in a totally different direction. After only two years of college he dropped out and with a friend by the name of Paul Allen, came up with an idea that someday would change the world. Bill and Allen put their heads together and came up with an idea that would make a computer as easy to work with as a one year old can work a spoon. Sure Bill didn’t invent the computer but his programs, software and eventually his games would be seen in just about every business and house hold around the world. As time went by a lot of small or medium business became bigger because computer became small and easier to use and you could communicate with each other and that meant more computers were needed and that meant more programs. Suddenly people were working at home and when the adults weren’t on the computer the...

The English Language in Turkey – a Case Study of Linguistic Imperialism

...Cultural Studies Mr. Looi van Kessel, M.A. The English language in Turkey – A case study of linguistic imperialism English is considered to be the world’s lingua franca. It is the most extended language in all kinds of international interactions, including trade, culture, and academia. This is considered to be a factual statement and not a normative one. Certain scholars have considered the rise of English as a positive process in normative terms, while others have critiqued it as a form of imperialism. However, both sides of the argument agree on the principle that English is indeed the global language (Lin and Martin 116). The effects of English linguistic imperialism can be found in a plethora of countries, but they are mostly evident in countries that adopt official language policies to encourage the use of English in order to position themselves closer to the Western world. That is the case of Turkey which has favored English teaching and usage since the late 19th century (Doğançay-Aktuna and Kiziltepe 254-257). Furthermore, this official language policy and its consequences are most noticeable in academia, an environment where English has become an essential tool for participating in the international scientific community. This essay will discuss the case of Turkey as a country that has been directly impacted by English linguistic imperialism, resulting in a struggle between the economic benefits of expanding English usage, and the existence of a nationalist agenda for...

The Official Language Movement

...1 The Official Language Movement Your Name ETH/125 Date Instructor 2 The Official Language Movement When it comes to the constant debate over bilingual education there are many sources that can be reflected on . Part of all this is society personal attitudes when it comes to immigrants. (Rolf Kjolseth 2000). Many American, although not always conscious of their actions, often show a hypocritical double standard when it comes to bilingualism. On one side, they show pride and encourage a natural born American citizen that studies abroad learning a foreign language and becoming bilingual, at the same time they expect that all immigrants stop using their native languages and use only the English language to communicate. (Porter 1998) Much of the debate over bilingual education stems from an unrealistic expectation of immediate results. (Jim Cummins 2002). The public automatically believe that students should immerse themselves into the American culture and learn English and forget about their previous cultural background. Although many studies have shown that bilingual education provides a positive environment during the learning and social growth of many language-minority students, the opposition while mostly politically motivated has shown to have the upper hand when it come to most states debates. Many believe that being able to speak multiple languages in politics produces confusion among the citizens of a country. Any individual living in the United...

...occurs in the same relative location as the response information processing (Simon and Wolf, 1963). Explanations for the Simon effect generally refer to the interference that occurs in the response selection stage of decision making. Secondly, the researchers hypothesized that there would be further differentiation between the balanced and non-balanced bilinguals. Balanced verses non-balanced refer to the level of language proficiency in the dominant and less dominant language. Bilinguals with similar naming scores on the Boston Naming Test are described as balanced bilinguals whereas those with differences between their Spanish and English scores are defined as non-balanced bilinguals. The study group comprised of college students, their families and friends with a total of 108 monolinguals and 125 bilinguals. All of the bilinguals were English-Spanish speakers and all of the participants came from South Florida,...

...out that it is a nice person with a great personality hidden under a different appearance. The short story Eating Sugar, written by Catherine Merriman,_ _describes the meeting between two different cultures; how their first-hand-impressions on each other are and how this impression develops over time. The story takes place in Thailand in the month of April. We are in the deserted rainforest where an English family, consisting of Alex, Eileen and their twenty-one-year old daughter Suzanne, have been on a trip with other tourists and guides. But they decide to stay a little longer than the other, so they can enjoy the waterfall alone and end up getting lost. After a while - and many thoughts about the situation, they meet a group of Thai men. Suzanne and her parents have very different views on strangers. Alex and Eileen are very suspicious about the Thais, and they do not feel safe among them. They do not trust them, and especially Alex is sure that they have met someone who might be dangerous as he states: “...Christ, they could be up to anything” (_page 5, line 125)_ Unlike her parents, Suzanne is very cool about the whole situation. She is not afraid of meeting new people, and does not judge them beforehand: _“They offered you a beer, Dad. Why’d they do that if they were up to something? ... They’re nice people, Dad. I’m sure ... Everything’s going to be alright” (Page 5, lines 126-128) _ Suzanne is very optimistic and unlike Alex and Eileen, she is actually...

Ethics

...Race and Your Community ETH/125 Race and Your Community I live in a small rural town in Northwest Texas. The community is primarily comprised of Hispanic Americans that emigrated from Mexico. Generations of these families exist, the majority of them do not speak English and are migrant workers in the agriculture industry. Interacting within the community can be challenging at times, and finding employment without being bilingual in next to impossible. The community leaders are mainly Hispanic American as well, seeing as how it is only 16% Caucasian. This area is different from the majority of the population, even within Texas. Caucasians are the minority here, and we are treated like it! I pray this is a learning/teaching experience for my sons of how to properly treat others, like you would like to be treated. My family moved to this area from Golden, a small suburb of Denver, Colorado. It has been a culture shock to say the least. Coming from a mountainous area to flat and baron is less than exciting or fulfilling. The area is extremely depressing, with little work or recreation. The housing is cheap, that is truly the one positive of living here. The people are unfriendly, and most cannot communicate with you at all. It is challenging to come from an English speaking city where being bilingual is a choice, to a small rural town where being bilingual is a necessity. Obviously, I do not plan to live...

...all the questions: (10 Marks) IN SEARCH OF GOOD ENGLISH FOOD 1 How come it is so difficult to find English food in England? In Greece you eat Greek food, in France French food, in Italy Italian food, but in England, in any High Street in the land, it is easier to find Indian and Chinese restaurants than English ones. In London you can eat Thai, Portuguese, Turkish, Lebanese, Russian, Polish, Swiss, Swedish, Spanish, and Italian—but where are the English restaurants? 6 It is not only in restaurants that foreign dishes are replacing traditional British food. In every supermarket, sales of pasta, pizza and poppadoms are booming. Why has this happened? What is wrong with the cooks of Britain that they prefer cooking pasta to potatoes? Why do the British choose to eat lasagna instead of shepherd’s pie? Why do they now like cooking in wine and olive oil? But perhaps it is a good thing. After all, this is the end of the 20th century and we can get ingredients from all over the world in just a few hours. Anyway, wasn’t English food always disgusting and tasteless? Wasn’t it always boiled to death and swimming in fat? The answer to these questions is a resounding ‘No’, but to understand this, we have to go back to before World War II. 15 The British have in fact always imported food from abroad. From the time of the Roman invasion foreign trade was a major influence on British cooking. English kitchens, like the English language, absorbed ingredients from all over the...

Synthesis Essay on Mother Tongue by Amy Tan and Censoring Myself by Betty Shamieh

...English 125 April, 2nd, 2012 Synthesis essay Today we live in a society that is often called a "salad bowl". It is called a "salad bowl" because it consists of various different people from various different backgrounds. We all live together in a society, but we still retain our own distinct flavors which helps to contribute to the richness and diversity of society. Unfortunately, today we also live in a society in which some of these groups are marginalized and looked down upon by others. Hence, often times as individuals we feel the need to compromise the way in which we communicate our ideas so that we can appeal to the views of the majority. Two authors explore how their attempt to compromise almost caused them to become detached from their roots. In "Mother Tongue," by Amy Tan, Tan talks about growing up as a young child in America and learning the English language. She speaks about growing up as a writer and her mother's imperfect diction which had a major influence on her. On the other hand, In her essay, "Censoring Myself," Betty Shamieh talks about being an American playwright and having to censor herself because of how her work was viewed. Both authors explore the influence that their background had on their ability to express themselves. As individuals we should not be afraid to express ourselves because of our differences, rather we should use our differences and show how our distinctions make us very unique. Firstly, In ""Mother Tongue," Tan...

...HUMANISM IN THE CLASSROOM: TEACHING & LEARNING IN THE EYES OF ROGERS & MASLOW Posted on March 17, 2013 by julesborras 1 [pic] Studying the science of psychology for quite some time now made me realized that there isn’t one single approach that is used to explain all human behaviours and mental processes alone. One possible explanation for this is the fact that a particular approach has its own strengths and limitations. This realization is likewise true in my quest to understand and apply the process of learning. Among the approaches, humanistic psychology at first glance may not be associated with learning. Its principles and applications are more related to the fields of counselling, developmental, personality and social. But in learning, some may think twice. Nevertheless, humanistic approach, the ‘third force’ of psychology, focus on the things that make people uniquely human such as subjective emotions and the freedom to choose one’s own destiny. Can this approach be applied in the classroom? Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, the famous founders of humanism, would definitely say yes! The question now is how? To answer the question, let me discuss their theories. CARL ROGERS: The Self-Concept Rogers (1961) emphasized that human beings are always doing their utmost effort to fulfil their innate capacities and capabilities and to develop into everything that their genetic potential will allow them to become. This striving...

Assimilation of Consonant in English and of the Indefinite Article in Arabic

...In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful Hebron University Faculty of Graduate Studies English Department Assimilation of Consonants in English and Assimilation of the Definite Article in Arabic By Hamada Shehdeh Abid Dawood ‫حمادة داود‬ Supervised by Dr. Ahmad Atawneh 2013/2014 Assimilation of Consonants in English and Assimilation of the Definite Article in Arabic Abstract This paper aims at discussing the term assimilation. Assimilation is a phonological process where a sound looks like another neighboring sound. It includes progressive, regressive, coalescent, full and partial assimilation. In addition, contextual assimilation is subject to the environment of sounds where historical assimilation is resulted from the development of languages. In Arabic, it is clear that the /l/ sound in the definite article disappears if followed by coronal consonants. It is, however, concluded that the importance of assimilation is to make pronunciation of a word or speech easier. 1. Introduction Assimilation is an everyday occurrence in every human language, and it is particularly common for nasal sounds (McMahon, 2002, p. 4). Thus, sounds in the environment of other sounds, across morpheme and word boundaries tend to undergo various phonological changes referred to as phonological processes (Ofulue et al, 2010, p. 49). Making a sound more like another in the same or next word in continuous utterance is called assimilation (Oxford Dictionary, 2008)...

This study attempts to identify potential sources of anxiety relevant to the students’ affective needs or concerns in an institution of higher learning through the use of an in-depth qualitative questionnaire. As the pre-administered questionnaire findings indicate, the differences in the level of language anxiety exhibited by the participants seem to vary by gender. Using various studies by previous researchers of language anxiety as a theoretical guideline for data collection and analysis, this study also discusses some of the influences or impact of anxiety-provoking factors on second language learning, along with some implications for further research on language anxiety. 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Introduction Anxiety is a negative way to present human feelings. When we are anxious, we feel nervous, worried, and fearful. We struggle, tremble, perspire, and our hearts beat quickly. In general, anxiety can be defined as a complex concept dependent upon not only on one’s feelings of selfefficacy...

David Sedaris

...He was convinced that “everything he said was wrong,” (110) which, of course, was not true but no doubt the aggressiveness of his teacher was enough to make him feel as such. The hyperbole language added to the resigned emotion that Sedaris was experiencing, allowing the reader to share in the sadness. Luckily, he was able to relate with his classmates; they had in common a feeling of compassion for each other and “took no comfort in the fact that, unlike Hyeyoon Cho, we all knew the irregular past tense of the verb to defeat,” (122). As the school year continued, the feeling that it was going to be “impossible to believe that any of us would ever improve,” (125) sunk in deeper and deeper. At one point, the teacher insulted Sedaris, maybe worse than she had previously; it was that moment that he realized he understood every word she had said and a huge sense of accomplishment overcame him. All at once, he had his ah-ha! moment and realized that while the teaching method was unorthodox and sometimes outright abusive and scary, through hard work and perseverance he had learned far more than he was cognizant of. He felt as though “the world opened up,” (137). He recognized that while he still had a lot of work to do to be able to speak French fluently, understanding was the first milestone and he had overcome...
