Technology Social Change vs. The People
Slowly but surely, technology has made its growth very present to the world. Especially the fact that it has begun to filter out easier and quicker ways to complete tasks, spread information, and make it easier to communicate with others! Have you ever stop to think, the ways technology has influenced your life? Technology allows people to be 10x steps ahead with the constant need for knowledge. Have we thought about how many steps the human race has fallen behind mentally because of this advancement? Technology and social media has ultimately altered our brains, making it easier to get distracted, which affects our relationships with others, communications and interpersonal skills, alongside worsening our multi-tasking ability. There is still time to fix this and save the younger generation and ourselves. Getting rid of technology is not the answer, but knowing our limits and remaining focus on a single task can allow us to stay a bit more humanized.
Many of us have heard of social networking sites such as, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. These sites are great means of expressing yourself or to portray a type of image, but there is point where people online cross the line. Constantly putting personal business out there for others to know can create hostile environment and even an unsafe one. People create an illusion, where constantly checking our social networks for notifications that are not there, and people statuses in which I have already scrolled by twice already. In the article Is Facebook Making Us Lonely, Stephen Marche says, “What’s truly staggering about Facebook usage is not it’s volume – 750 million photographs uploaded over a single weekend - but the constancy of the performance it demands. More than half it’s users – and one of every thirteen people on Earth is a Facebook user – log on everyday. Among

Etymological Analysis of Modern English Vocabulary

...1 ETYMOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF MODERN ENGLISH VOCABULARY The modern English vocabulary falls into two main sets: native words and borrowings. Native words belong to the original English word-stock and are known from the earliest Old English manuscripts. It is customary to subdivide native words into those of the Indo-European stock and those of the common Germanic origin. The former have cognates in the vocabularies of all or most Indo-European languages, whereas the latter have cognates only in Germanic languages, but not in Romance, Slavonic or other languages of the Indo-European family. Several linguists are inclined to the opinion that there exist specifically English words which have no cognates in other languages and constitute the English proper element of the vocabulary. The degree of assimilation depends upon the length of period during which the word has been used in the receiving language, upon its importance for communication purpose and its frequency. Oral borrowings due to personal contacts are assimilated more completely and more rapidly than literary borrowings, i.e. borrowings through written speech. Loan words according to the degree of assimilation fall into three groups: a) completely assimilated loan words, b) partially assimilated loan words, c) unassimilated loan words or barbarisms. The group of partially assimilated words may be subdivided depending on the aspect that remains unaltered, i.e. according to whether the word retains features of spelling, pronunciation...

English 214: Course Analysis

...Entering this course, English 214, the perspective that I had is that it would not be as different from my prior English class, English 114. As I began to learn about the course and its structure, it did become clear that both English classes would not be too distinct from one another. For instance, this course would also revolve around your own topic of choice, in which throughout the semester your writing would be based on that topic. I personally like this structure of the class, since I am able to grow as a writer, reader, and critical thinker while studying and researching a topic that interests me. My understanding of writing at the beginning of this course, I believed that the only way that I was going to improve would be through...

English Language Learner (ELL) Student Analysis

...The English Language Learner (ELL) student benefits when English language instruction is integrated into the content areas in two main ways. The first covers the area of interaction, and practice and application. These areas allow the student to have the use of language modeled for them and then allow them time to practice the new language with peers and teacher. These students can then work on mastery of the subject and the language through the use of hand on materials and manipulatives allowing them to further practice the new language. The more ways the student is allow to practice the language, the better they are able to understand and use it (Hernández, 2003). The second way an ELL student benefits is through the implementation of...

Dual Enrollment English Class Analysis

...It's hard to believe that the final english class of my highschool career has for the last time, come and gone by. My education level has increased exponentially due to the rigorous course my teacher has designed for the students. Dual Enrollment English class taught me far more than just how to write a well written academic paper for my next four years in a college environment. Looking back on the second half of the semester, I can look back and appreciate all of the time spent preparing all of my essays, speeches, and notes for discussion. Throughout the semester, I definitely hit some speed bumps along the way; however, overcoming these dilemmas is what I will be able to carry with me throughout college. The class taught me how to be able to stand at the front of the classroom and speak about topics that I was less familiar with than familiar with, importance of priorities, how to write a well composed piece of literature in an academic format....

4a06 Dangthithaonguyen a Contrastive Analysis of Compliments in American English and Vietnamese

...HCMC University of Pedagogy – English department ( A CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF COMPLIMENTS IN AMERICAN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE Student: Dang Thi Thao Nguyen Class: 4A06 Instructor: Ph.D Nguyen Ngoc Vu (( December 2009 When a student gets a high score, his teacher usually says: “Good job!”. When a child automatically cleans up the room after playing, her parents are likely to say: “You are very good”. When you go to school wearing a new shirt, you probably hear from your friends: “That shirt looks nice on you”. Those utterances are called compliments which are used to show that someone likes someone else’s appearance, belongings, or work etc. Due to different cultural background and social values, English and Vietnamese native speakers have different norms of complimenting as well as responding to compliments. In this essay, I will discuss the notion of compliment made in American English and Vietnamese in terms of topics, formulas, and responses. First thing first, let have a look at the definition. Definition of compliment Cambridge dictionary defines a compliment as “a remark that expresses approval, admiration or respect”. In linguistics, Holmes (1986, p.446) wrote “A compliment is a speech act which explicitly or implicitly attributes credit to someone other than the speaker, usually the person addressed, for some ‘good’ (possession, characteristic, skill, etc.), which is...

English Film Analysis

...1. What is the significance between black and white? As for the transition from Black and White to Colour, it really represents not only the point in the movie where people started to express themselves more freely, but it also represents, even in today's society the fact that we still try and live in a black and white society. We are very judgemental and try to get people to conform to our way of thinking. It is worth noting that if the movie were to continue on in say a sequel it would have to eventually turn back into black and white because that reality would become the new conformity and thus start to lose all the colour from that world. This is what life really is for those that choose to live a full life. One of constant change. That's why it is so important to realize the futility of trying to hold onto anything too tightly. 2. David (toby McGuire) and Jennifer (Reese Witherspoom) how does Pleasantville change them? David begins to realize that the perceived happiness in Pleasantville is not nearly as fulfilling as he hoped it would be. As a result, he slowly evolves from dreamy outcast to leader of the changes that take place in Pleasantville. Jennifer, through her own personality, sparks the initial changes in the town. However, as the story continues, she begins to understand the limitations she has placed on herself in her own life. Her reading of a D. H. Lawrence novel signifies her effort to change herself, and thus, affect her own transformation. By the...

English Vocabulary Analysis

...Writing an essay is not as much about the end product as it is the journey to get there. You may possess the most expansive vocabulary, but the one variable that shows through your writing is time. Time is the one factor that shows improvement, effort, and persistence. Without time, the journey would not exist. Step one in the journey is throwing ideas on to paper. Throwing refers to the chaos of that first step. In my case, the throwing of ideas was evident in the lack of cohesion and argument. This action of throwing is only able to happen if the topic is of meaning to the writer. The topic I chose, the benefits of immersion programs to help learn a language, is something I am very passionate about. I've been lucky enough to experience it and see that it connects us to the world. This chaos is not due to my topic being subpar but due to my lack of experience and comfort with writing a compare and contrast essay. My first thought was to pick a topic and compare it to another, while showing how one is better than the other. It seemed simple, however, I was missing the main idea. The writing I am used to is that which contains a thesis, supporting points, and a conclusion. This form of writing is straight forward and the opportunity to form a complex argument is not always an option. To illustrate, my first idea was to show that experiential learning is superior to learning by a textbook. In an effort to create and argument, I wrote, "In order to acquire a new language, one must...

My English Composition Analysis

...Writing has never been my strong suit. In fact, even though I’m a junior in highschool, I still write like a middle schooler. I thought taking English Composition would be difficult for me, and although it wasn’t always easy, the class wasn’t as bad as I expected. English Composition improved my writing craft and the length of my papers. When I first started this class I didn’t have much of an idea on how to create a well-written paper. I’m still not at the level I would like to be, but I have improved. I used to think that every paper written for school had to be formal, and you couldn’t start a sentence with “and” or “but” or with the same word for multiple sentences in a row. From taking this class I have learned that those are types of writer’s craft. Starting the sentence with the same word is an echo effect and it’s used for emphasis. The piece that I believe shows most of my improvement is my analysis. I chose to do this piece on a song called “Scars to Your Beautiful.” I wasn’t sure how to really write an analysis. At first I tried to write about a picture where there was a young girl who seemed to be overwhelmed by school. She was surrounded by books and there was tons of writing and equations on a chalkboard behind her. I had no idea where to even...

Purpose and Significance Thanks to the globalization, the demand for the bilingual workers is on the rise. As English majors, we believe that what we can do to be more competitive in this increasingly globalized world is to have a solid command of this language. The certificates such as TEM-8(Test for English Majors Band Eight) is a must but what really matters is what ability the students really have possessed and could be employed at ease. Upon reflecting on the TEM-4 (Test for English Majors Band Four) /TEM-8 scores the seniors have acquired, we clearly learn that there is still quite a room for improvement, especially when it comes to writing. Some students still find it tough to put pen into the paper and work out a satisfactory essay; some are hard-pressed to express themselves smoothly in the...

“What Do We Say to the Client Who Still Insists on Having a “Native Speaker” English Teacher?” an Analysis of the Prejudices Surrounding Non-Native English Speaker Teachers (Nnests) and the Obstacles for Fostering

...“What do we say to the client who still insists on having a “native speaker” English teacher?” An analysis of the prejudices surrounding non-native English speaker teachers (NNESTs) and the obstacles for fostering cooperation between NNESTs and native English speaker teachers (NESTs) in ESL courses in Indonesia. Word count 2997 The spread of English across the globe in recent years had led to English being taught by many more NNESTs, a shift which has produced as many inconsistencies as it has benefits for both students and the teachers themselves. This paper will examine the types, level and origins of discrimination faced by NNESTs in the EF franchise of English language schools in Indonesia of which the author has 10 years’ experience working in. It will also assess the obstacles which hinder cooperation between NESTs and NNESTs within this context. The number of NNESTs is now at an all time high worldwide, fuelled by the rapid growth in the popularity of English language learning (Graddol 2006). Canagarajah (2005) estimates that NNESTs account for 80% of all English teachers, across both non-English and English speaking countries. Issues surrounding how NNESTs are viewed have become a hot topic for ESL school’s directors of studies, ESL students, parents of students (who want the best for their children, at the best price of course), NESTs and NNESTs (of themselves and each other) and not least the academics who write about the relative merits and demerits of each...

Ap English Literature Analysis

...The use of motifs in literature help focus and enhance the story, it connects all the different parts of a single text in order to promote the main point the author is trying to get across to his readers. In other words, writers use motifs to add depth, meaning, and shape the way us readers receive and understand the story. This is done by using repetition to enhance the symbolic importance, it makes them noticeable enough to clarify the nature of the story and the course of events. It is extremely useful in intricate works that involve multiple plots, elements, and characters that make if challenging to criticize. Motifs can be broken down into a single element allowing the opportunity to conclude and provide perception into the important messages and desires of a certain literature. Some are even useful for staring discussions and interpreting the work being read. A comparison between the two Arthurian literature’s motifs of the text Lanval and The marriage of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell will be interpreted by identifying both the similarities and differences of both stories, as well as the different values and historical text each literature consist of. In these literatures, Lanval and The marriage of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell, there is a similar motif of feminine desire and power. They present two different powerful female characters: the fairy mistress and Dame Ragnell. However, despite their differences, these women are actually very similar in many ways. For instance...

English 111 Rhetorical Analysis

...In English 111 I have learned different things to perfect my writing skills. We specifically spent more time focusing on rhetorical knowledge and its different categories. These categories include what rhetoric is its self, what a rhetorical situation is, what the rhetorical triangle is, and what are the rhetorical appeals are. It all can be tricky to understand but I think I have a pretty clear understanding of what rhetorical knowledge is. Let me first explain what rhetoric is. Rhetoric is the ability in each particular case to see the available means of persuasion. We use this all the time is our everyday life; when we speak, write, or any type of communication to convince other we are using rhetoric. For example say you’re watching TV and Dove soap commercial comes on, there’s a woman in the commercial that uses a different brand of soap and she states that she is having problems...

English 265 Website Analysis

...Subject: Website Analysis of Apple and Samsung Abstract This memo will be discussing the utilization of .com websites of two of the world’s largest technology and electronic brands, Apple and Samsung. In this memo, we will explain how each company uses their websites to gear towards their specific brand and consumers. Each company has its own way of separating itself from competitors in the market, with Apple and Samsung, they tend to be on polar ends of the marketing and consumer snagging spectrum. While one company focuses in on the simplicity of heavy technology, the other weighs in on the variety of technology. Both companies use their websites to efficiently capture different audiences, and effectively together rack enough consumers to control 46.6% of the world market share in technology. The two companies both utilize their websites to be the driving force of their brand. Website Layout Apples website is a direct insight into the sophisticated, simplistic, and professional theme that Apple has tried to portray for decades now. With its sleek and mono-font, monochromatic design, the website is directly setup to create brand awareness. Immediately, an IProduct user or anyone familiar with Apples products recognizes that the layout and color scheme of the website, is the exact same layout and color scheme in the platforms they use for the IPad, ITouch, Mac, and IPhone. Their easy-to-use website also mimics the “for all ages” concept of their products. Samsung’s website...
