The Grammar of Animacy

...The Grammar of Animacy Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation The Grammar of Animacy 1. What kind of languages does Kimmerer talk about in this essay? Mainly Kimmerer talks about the native language Potawatomi, which was used by Indians in America long before they were assimilated by the colonial masters to English. She also mentions other forms of languages such as scientific language, which she honors as a second tongue to her. However, she notes that this language that is being spoken by scientists, even though may be precise, it is profound with grammar errors. Third, she mentions about English, which she mainly uses to write the essay, but points that as a language, it is primarily composed of nouns than verbs (70% nouns and 30% verbs). This, she notes, contradicts the native languages such as Potawatomi that are mainly composed of verbs. Finally, she talks about the Spanish language that just like the English one, thrived out of the assimilation process and is what most indigenous communities resorted to apart from their extinct native languages. 2. How many fluent speakers are there of Potawatomi? And what does the great-grandmother say will be lost when the language is lost? For the Potawatomi language class that was organized by Kimmerer and others of the indigenous group, only nine (9) fluent speakers of the language were found to be presently alive, globally. In her words, Kimmerer notes that the language, Potawatomi, millennia in the making was contained...

...000 with English being the most popular. English may not be the most spoken language in the world, but it is the official language in a large number of countries. Throughout the world, when people with different languages come together, they commonly use English to communicate whether it might be spoken through physical interactions or putting words together. The three types of languages that I use to communicate are English, Urdu and body language. I am one in the 2 billion people that use English even though it is my second language. Language is the human ability to acquire and use complex systems of communication. In the United States, speaking English immediately opens up opportunities regardless of your ethnicity, color or background. Since English language is so widely spoken, many people believe it is vital to learn as a second language. When I speak English, my tone depends on who I am talking to because if I am addressing an adult then it is respectful with correct English but if I am talking to friends then my tone is informal. It is believed that English is the language of trade. It is true that English has been introduced in the field of Trade and Business for a lot of years. In addition, English is a language that is used in films, music, television, and in a lot of more technological features like World Wide Web (internet). Tefl Unit1

...Cristian N. Mormoloc WORKSHEET – UNIT 1 Task 1 – List 5 qualities that a ‘good’ teacher should have and give reasons for your choices. Which of these qualities do you consider to be more important, and why? 1. Ability to easily pass the knowledge onto the students; 2. Capacity of turning the more complicated topics into easy-to-understand topics and delivering them that way; 3. Good knowledge of the subject; 4. Adaptability to each student’s level; 5. Knowing when to “push” on some task or when to help the students throughout the task they might have. I consider that the most important quality is the knowledge that the teacher has, followed closely by the capacity of delivering that knowledge in an easy-to-comprehend manner, adapted to the level of the student or group. I consider these to be the basic requirements that should be a must for the teacher – the rest of the requirements (/qualities) are a consequence of the way of being as person, or the schooling environment, as well as the culture of the students, willingness to study, capacity of staying focused, life experience, age, aso. Task 2 – State what you consider to be the five most important roles of a teacher. Describe each role and say why you think it is important. 1. Tutor; 2. Resource or facilitator; 3. Prompter; 4. Assessor; 5. Manager (and also controller on the same rank of importance). 1. Tutor: in my opinion, the tutor characteristic of a teacher is outstanding in front of the...

Essay On Language Learning

...Despite the fact that language learning or acquisition is an apparent requirement for translation, the role that translation might play in language learning and acquisition has been considered one of the most hotly debated issue in both Translation Studies and language pedagogy in the West as well as Arab world. Thus, translation studies have been taught in translation classes without being seen in normal foreign or second language (FL) classrooms. In spite of the claims in opposition to make use of translation in English language classroom, recent studies regard highly that far from being counter-productive and fruitless, translation can be an effective boost in (FL) learning and teaching. In most of Arabic countries, the mother tongue, Arabic,...

...Importance of English Language Teaching in India By Prof (Dr) Shefali Bakshi, Deputy Director, Amity School of Languages Since the colonization of India, English became the language of our country and is soon expanding. The teaching of English is gaining importance in every area today. With all its countless, instructional objectives like the aural-oral skills of listening and speaking, graphic skills of reading and writing, appreciation, etc, it has become one of the most difficult subjects to teach in the Indian situation. The complexities of the skills involved, alienation and other problems such as differences in the levels of initiation of instruction, differences in the socio-economic status, differences in urban and rural background, scarcity of teachers well-versed in content matter as well as the methodology of teaching, lack of adequate aids and instructional material, hamper in their own way the successful handling of English in the classroom. The teaching of English whether for beginners or for the advanced learners has been a challenging pursuit for the teachers of English especially the area that cover the acquisition of four skills of language – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Proper training of teachers is of great importance in improving the quality of English education. We need to understand the ethos, culture and the present Indian situation so as to have an effective methodology of developing a second language in our learners. One needs to...

Growing Up In A Bilingual Home

...Not everyone enjoys reading. Some might hate it and only do it because they have no other option, like students and especially college students. But again without the beauty of reading many of us would be lost in this world. Some of us find companion and safety when it comes to reading. Personally, I enjoy reading romance novels, horror novels and non-fiction novels because it helps me escape of my reality for a short amount of time. There are times that I loose track of time when reading, I get caught up in my own little world and can’t seem to put down the books. But like I mentioned not everyone might have the same perspective as me. As a reader you either learn how to love reading or hate it. Growing up in a bilingual home I was constantly...

Personal Narrative: My Life In Middle School

...A normal school day in America was extremely different than the ones I had experienced in my whole life. I was just so not prepared. My confidence was like a sliding scale throughout those six months. Things were difficult, I was put in a beginners English course where they taught kids alphabets and what the simple daily words meant even though I knew all of this as I studied in a British English school in India. But as I did have an Indian accent, I had to learn and understand English from the start which was I thought was so unfair. My accent was also the only reason for why I was bullied so much, because of an Indian girl having an Indian accent was not acceptable. I hated being in an American school where people thought of me as a foreigner who couldn’t speak like them. The only solution I could think of during that time was just to observe other about how they spoke, and what a normal American teenager was...
