l. First main change: The government needs to stop creating long term programs and start to focus on creating more short term programs that are easy to start up A. “I’m also issuing a new goal for America: Let’s cut in half the energy wasted by our homes and businesses over the next 20 years,” Obama said”-Brad Plumer, Washington Post (Pres. Plan to be more energy efficient) 1. The president is definitely thinking about renewable resources and wants to incorporate them into the average American’s life, but again and again he uses words like “hope to”, “proposals”, words implying that these plans are loosely constructed and not in the forefront of the United State’s government’s mind. Maybe this is because his deadline is 20 years away. Obviously long term programs haven’t worked thus far. Making short term projects will make for stricter deadlines, a more focused and motivated team of officials and more projects getting up and running for the near future. 2. We believe that some of the short term programs that should be enacted first are getting the federal government agencies and the White House itself to start using renewable resources. To start having half of the energy these buildings are using to come from renewable energy resources like solar or wind power. By incorporating these types of renewable energy resources into their everyday lives, they will soon encourage the American peoples to use them to, not to mention benefiting the economy. 3. Advertising programs. B. “The White House’s fact sheet went even further, laying out a proposal to double the energy efficiency of the entire U.S. economy over that time frame”- Brad Plumer, Washington Post

1. Again, short term programs that have strict deadlines will increase and speed up the decision making process for legislative action. Debating and contemplating these ideas

Common Ground

...Arenson English 101 17 July 2012 Common Ground Essay The first commercial coal mine in America was started in the 1748. ("History of US Coal Use.") The first commercial oil well in the United States was drilled in 1859. (Yergin, 7) These two fossil fuels were the power behind the American Industrial Revolution, and wealth behind Edward Berwind and John Rockefeller(Brinkley, 435), respectively, that continue to provide power and fuel in present day society. Natural gas is another fossil fuel that helps to provide for the needs of today. Oil, coal, and gas companies tout new technologies that make their products cleaner and safer for the environment. Opponents of fossil fuels say there is no way to burn them cleanly. Proponents for fossil fuels believe there are plenty of reserves to keep America running on fossil fuels for years to come. Advocates for newer technologies, “green” technologies, such as solar power, geothermal energy, and biofuels claim that the time to move on from these fossil fuels has arrived. The new energy sources claim to be renewable so as to never run out. (E.g., the sun would have to supernova for solar power to run out.) They believe the point of “Peak Oil”- the point at which worldwide oil production begins to decline, has already passed and the country will need their new technologies to keep pace during the changing of the energy guard. There are many lenses through which to look at the use of all these energy sources. The end of the debate as to...

No Child-Left Behind Act

...Before closing my arguments on the social and economic goals and implications of the NCL Act, I also stated the policy alternatives to the Act. I have stated the President Obama’s policy alternative which seeks to achieve educational equality and the areas of concentration including quality preschool, well-trained teaching staff, and local involvement. Conclusion The social and economic goals of the NCLB were not misplaced; they had the potential to change the socioeconomic status of people of color. However, as it is the case with most social intervention programs, its implementation was quite problematic. Clearly, more diligence was needed in that area as it can be seen from the controversies that arose from it. Moreover, for a policy to succeed, the undivided support of those who are going to ensure its success is needed and should not be seen as pushed down their throats. The unflinching...

Power by the Wind

...Power by the Wind 1 Power by the Wind Power by the Wind covers the topic of wind energy. There is a large sector in our country that believes wind energy is an excellent alternative resource, including myself. There is also a group of people that believe that the wind turbines that are used to generate wind energy is a bad idea because they obstruct the natural view, causes death to birds, and generates noise pollution. They also argue that wind energy is not a dependable source of energy because the wind does not blow continually. I will explain the long history of wind energy and the methods that have been used to harness it. I will also look at wind energy from a positive and negative perspective. A Long History: The human relationship with the wind has been a long one with the use of sailing ships and windmills. For centuries past the wind was used as the main power source for sailing ships. The use of windmills seems to have started with the Persians for grinding grain (between 500 and 900 A.D.). Windmills started appearing in Europe around the time of the Crusades (1096 -1270). The European design is very different from the Persian one Power by the Wind 2 and there is an ongoing debate whether the Europeans developed the windmill themselves or the Crusaders had taken the idea back to Europe. The earliest windmills found in Europe were a post mill construction. The main structure of the windmill sits on top of a post and...

G Local Warming

...English 1012, GW Essay Global warming, by definition is the increase in the Earth's ocean and near surface temperatures. In the last several decades, there have been numerous debates regarding global warming. The vast majority of the scientific community now agrees that global warming is caused by the increase in greenhouse gasses, but there is an ongoing debate on whether the increase is due to human activity or from natural sources, such as volcanoes and forest fires. The controversy gained a lot of public attention in 2005 when politician and former Vice President Al Gore created a documentary titled An Inconvenient Truth. The documentary was a compilation of scientific research, theories, and facts that served to blame human activity as the culprit of global warming. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) created the Kyoto Protocol in response to the threats associated with global warming (Hawkins 1). The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement among industrialized nations whom have pledged to reduce their annual emission of greenhouse gasses. The protocol currently consists of over 160 nations representing over 55% of the world's greenhouse gases. Ironically, the United States, the biggest contributor of greenhouse gases, accounts for 20.6% of the worlds greenhouse gases, and has not signed the protocol (Clemmit). Our nation's political leaders are at a debate on whether money should be spent in order to decelerate or prevent global warming. George W...

As it is surrounded by sea, the country’s port plays an important role in maritime transportation for both exports and imports. In March 2011, the world was affected when Japan was struck with natural disasters (Earthquake and Tsunami). This sudden disaster sent everyone around the world into frenzy. It affected Japan’s ports, shipping and logistics. As a result of the natural disasters, ports in the northern area of Japan had to stop operations after the Tsunami washed away port facilities, leaving the area in tatters. Ports such as Hachinohe, Ishinomaki and Onahama were severely damaged and it would take months before operations can resume. It will take some time for Japan to rebuild itself as this is the worst disaster to hit the country since the Hiroshima/Nagasaki nuclear bombing during the World War 2. 1.2 Objectives of Project The team will be doing a research and critical analysis on how the crisis has affected Japan’s economy and how the revival of Japan will benefit the shipping economy. Global Warming

...Global Warming: Eye Opening Facts that it is Refutably upon Us Terrie M. Hornbeck Buena Vista University Author Note Prepared for: Laura Brahn’s Globalism Seminar Abstract In recent years, scientists noticed that the average temperature of the Earth was increasing and looked for causes for the change. It is clear that the Earth has had changes in its average temperature many times in the geologic past before humans were present (Enger & Smith, 2013). Therefore, scientists initially tried to determine if the warming was a natural phenomenon or the result of human activity. Several gases such as carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, methane, and nitrous oxide are known as greenhouse gases because they let sunlight enter the atmosphere but slow the loss of heat from the Earth’s surface. Evidence of past climate change going back as far as 160,000 years indicates a close correlation between the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and global temperatures. Computer simulations of climate indicate that global temperatures will rise as atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases increase, and there are many others effects predicted by an increase in temperature. Since these predictions are based on computer models of climate, some scientists criticized them as being inaccurate and constructed from sketchy data. Because major disagreements arose over the significance of global warming, the United Nations Environment Programme established an Intergovernmental...
