Text 28, The Sweet Menu presents the idea of solitary eating by giving us the image of a man sat all alone in a restaurant ‘as if someone will come’ where as text 18, Mexican Scrambled Eggs demonstrates social eating by illustrating that you can ‘whip up a batch off these’.
Both texts are slightly similar when it comes to purpose as the sweet menu is a text which makes the reader feel quite guilty because this man is hoping he will be enjoying dinner with someone tonight but ends up being alone surrounded by different families. However it is a text to entertain and explore. However in Mexican scrambled eggs it is a recipe to entertain, inform and explore. The audience that the sweet menu is aimed for could be older people because they usually tend to be alone unlike young adults who don’t like going to a restaurant on their own. This is different to text 16 because it is aimed at younger adults and we see this when it says ‘greatest hangover cures around’. This gives the reader the sense that she had a party last night and isn’t alone this morning because of it.
The structure of the sweet menu is interesting because it is in couplets which represents 2 people eating at a dinner table but in this case it’s the opposite because he is on his own. Also the couplets represent the pace of the poem which is quite slow and quite painful which allows Hughes to feel the pain for longer. The last line represents Hughes though because it is on its own just like he is throughout the poem and it’s as if he had just hit reality to realize no one is coming. Also it represents him as ambiguous because that last line can have many interpretations. In Mexican scrambled eggs it is laid out in a way a recipe should be laid out. We can see this

Comparing and Contrasting the British Cuisine with the Indian Cuisine

...Comparing and Contrasting the British Cuisine with the Indian Cuisine A cuisine is a traditional method or style of cooking, which is usually related to a particular culture. Cuisine can be considered as an aspect of the culture of a country in countless ways. For example, religion has a great influence on food in Muslim countries where people tend to eat all types of meat except pork. In this essay, I will be comparing and contrasting the British cuisine with that of my own country, the Indian cuisine. There are both, very interesting similarities and differences that one can notice in the traditional cuisines of both these countries which may, in fact, prove to be quite interesting. I think both of these cuisines are different yet so much alike. Firstly, there are several differences between these two cuisines. British cuisine traditionally consists of simple dishes matched with delicious sauces. This cuisine is worldwide renowned for its Christmas dinner and full breakfast. “The most important foods of Britain are meat, fish, potatoes, flour, butter, and eggs, as many of its dishes are mainly based on these ingredients.” (Mandy Barrow, 2010). On the other hand, the Indian cuisine is one of the most popular cuisines in the world and is famous for its great love for food and more importantly, spices. Even though same foodstuffs, such as meat, fish, etc. are used in India as well, the varied uses of the spices are a vital part of food preparation as this makes these dishes...

Synthesis Paper of Three Perspectives

...The main idea that appears throughout Kincaid's, Menissi's, and Hurston's articles is certain biases within a specific culture. In her "How It Feels To Be Colored Me", Hurston speaks about the culture of the Americans and the African Americans. She mentions how people believe that these cultures differ, yet she thinks otherwise. In her Size 6 : The Western Women's Harem, Mernissi believes that men dictate all the judgments surrounding what women's size should be. In her Excerpt from On Seeing England for the First Time, Kincaid displays her own biases towards English culture because she is originally from Antigua. Hurston speaks about how white Americans believe that they and African Americans are different, yet she believes that they're the same. She does have her doubts however, for example when she was in the bar and saw a white person, she noticed the difference between herself and him. "He is so pale with his whiteness then and I am so colored" (197). She speaks of the cultural biases that are placed on her and her family because she is of color. She states, "at certain times I have no race, I am me"(197). She states this to oppose what other people think about white Americans and African Americans. She says that she has no race and is only herself, to show that she is nothing more than a human. She also emphasizes that she only feels American, neither white or black. "I have no separate feelings about being an American citizen and colored"(197). To make a point that...

...Running head: ENG 160: English Composition I Final Exam ENG 160: English Composition I Final Exam Allied American University Author Note This paper was prepared for ENG 160: English Composition I, ENG 160: English Composition I Final Exam taught by Jeffrey Stamberger Final Exam When it comes time to decide where to eat on one of our “Date Days”, two places come to mind and are hard to pick from because both are great. One is Culver’s, a small fast food restaurant, and Max & Erma’s, a small family dining restaurant. One may seem different than the other because of the set up but in actuality they are pretty similar in what they offer that keeps us coming back to both. Generally I prefer Max & Erma’s while my husband likes Culver’s. When trying to decide we generally look at what we have to spend and how much time we have to spend in order to get everything done before we have to be home for the kids. Generally the first decision is, “What is our time and money limit?” From there we decide whether we want to eat at Culver’s or Max & Erma’s. Both have amazing food! Culver’s is famous for their “Butter Burger” and frozen custard as to where Max & Erma’s are famous for their “Garbage Burger” according to my husband. I prefer the “Build Your Own” burger. The only thing different in the price range is if we get appetizers while at Max & Erma’s, but if you figure in the dessert at Culver’s there really is no difference I the two. Time wise...

An Improper Proposal

...English 103 10 July 2014 An Improper Proposal “A Modest Proposal”, written by Johnathon Swift, is perhaps one of the greatest literary works in English history. It is an intelligently written satire that is set in 1729. In it Swift presents the idea of devouring one year old infants in an attempt to feed the hungry and ever growing population. The satire is set in Ireland and was aimed at Catholics, who were known for having a lot of kids and being too poor to care for them. Throughout his persuasive/argumentative satire he utilizes logic and reason, emotion, and character to argue why his proposal is a good solution to the excess population and to persuade others to follow his idea. One of the types of arguments Swift employs throughout his essay is logos. Logos are arguments that are based on fact and reason. In the beginning of his literary work Swift begins discussing how many children are born every year to poverty stricken parents. He uses specific numbers such as “. . . . One-hundred and twenty thousand children of the poor are born annually” to bring to light how much the population and hunger problems will continue to grow. Swift is using logos (logic and reason) when he uses statistics of children born to parents who cannot afford to care for them. He also uses logos to dehumanize the infants by comparing them to food already eaten. When Swift compares the children to roasting pigs he is using an analogy. Another logical analogy Swift uses is comparing...

Shooting an Elephant

...Thiong’o both Orwell and Thiong’o received the British colonial education. As humans, others' opinions mean a great deal to us, and in "Shooting an Elephant", and “Decolonising the Mind,” they both have one thing in common: English. "Shooting an Elephant" is the story of a British policeman in Moulmein, a city in Burma, that is torn between shooting or not shooting an elephant that has gone ramped. Many people may misinterpret George Orwell's tone in the essay "Shooting an Elephant." People often construe that the story is about Orwell's decision to either shoot the elephant, or to just peacefully observe it until the mahout came to tame the animal. The story is actually about the struggles Orwell faces because of his position "in between" the Burmese and the imperialistic system. Orwell portrays a distinctive amount of irony in this piece of writing because after he reviewed the situation and started this essay, he spotted a lot of irony in the actions between himself, the people of Burma, and the British Empire. Thiong’o gives a powerful image of how British government tries to control the culture of Kenya. In “Decolonising the Mind”, Thiong’o illustrates his childhood: “All the paper were written in English. Nobody could pass the exam who failed the English language paper no matter how brilliantly he had done in the other subjects”(167). This shows that “the language” comes first above all. In their culture, nothing is more important than the language. Why? Thiong’o explains...

Chick-Fil-a vs. Raising Canes

...Madison Blankenship English 101-004 Mr. Lyles October 19, 2012 Raising Cane’s Vs. Chick-fil-A Raising Cane’s and Chick-Fill-A are very popular fast food restaurants that both specialize in chicken.  While both specialize in the same type of food, they conduct their businesses differently. Their presentations are similar in some areas and different in others. Kristin Mastre greatly explains that Raising Cane’s and Chick-fil-A can be easily compared through their environment, costs, nutrition, and variety in her article,“Throwdown! Chick-fil-A versus Raising Cane’s.” (par. 1). The environments of each restaurant provide an atmosphere that makes the customer want to return. Raising Cane’s has a very fun type of decoration using movie posters, band posters, and sports team decoration. It uses these posters to attract people of all ages to eat there. Raising Cane’s also allows their employees to show team spirit for sports’ teams around the area (Feasting Fort Collins, par. 7). This atmosphere makes the restaurant a perfect place to be after football games. Chick-fil-A has a family oriented environment. It has children play places, and very polite service. Chick-fil-A employees will always ask, “How they may serve you?” and answer the customer’s “Thank you” with “My pleasure.” The customer service creates an atmosphere so the customer feels that he or she is not actually in a fast food restaurant (Feasting Fort Collins, par. 5). Both restaurants provide outstanding environments...

Industrial Revolution Research Paper

...To understand how industrialization changed the world, starting in Britain, it is vital to look at how the world operated pre-industrialization. Living conditions were awful all around the world prior to the 1800’s. The world did not yet have adequate technology to defend itself against natural disasters, famines, and diseases. In addition, some places were not able to sustain enough resources for the population as it increased. Although these problems existed around the world, “before 1800 income per person —the food, clothing, heat, light, and housing available per head—varied across societies,” creating a gap before industries came to widen it. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, Britain did not have as much income as China did. Britain’s land made it difficult to farm, exposing the difficulties of what an ever growing population did to society. In his book, The Great Divergence: China, Europe, and the Making of the Modern World Economy, Kenneth Pomeranz demonstrates how Britain’s, like the rest of Europe’s, “disadvantages were concentrated in areas of agriculture, land management, and the inefficient use of certain land intensive products.” Without the ability to provide enough resources for a population to survive, there is no way for a population...
