Introduction
For my investigation I have decided to look at the differences in language when discussing power between characters in popular medical TV series Grey’s Anatomy.
Contextual issues may include the differences in power between characters, gender differences in the work place and how the show is scripted for entertainment.
I chose to investigate Grey’s Anatomy as I enjoy the show and also because I wanted to understand why it was so popular in today’s society. Furthermore, I wanted to explore the language used in hospitals as there is a unspoken rule that people of a lower status in hospitals, must answer to whoever is above them. It is important for hospitals to have a clear power hierarchy as it may be a matter of life and death in some situations. Through studying this, I hope to broaden my knowledge on language and power and develop information I learn throughout my AS level.
In the data I have collected, I will be specifically looking at conversations between Doctors and Interns as a way of identifying the clear line of division when it comes to language and power. I will also be looking at the differences between male and female characters, to hopefully show a contrast between genders and to come to a conclusion to whether woman use less negative face than men. I also intend to look at conversations between just the interns themselves in order to show a contrast between language used in the workplace and language used in social situations.
The final thing I will be looking at is the choice of language used, for example I will look at imperatives and other language features, to show politeness strategies and use of face threatening acts in order to assert power in a work situation.
My hypotheses are as follows: * Doctors will assert power over the Interns * Interactions between Doctors and Interns will be clearly asymmetrical encounters * People in power will use more negative face threatening acts and fewer politeness strategies than the people in a lower rank than themselves

My Ethnic Background

...Intro to Diversified Studies Cultural Background Although my maternal grandmother was born a mixture of English and Native American, she was raised in a household that was a blend of Native American and Mexican American. Her mother, my great grandmother, who was also a mixture of English and Native American, remarried after giving birth to her first four children. This new marriage was to a Mexican American man and brought another eight children into the family. Growing up in this type of household influenced not only the foods she cooked, such as fideo, tortillas, and green chili; but, established a multigenerational line of care giving. Being the second oldest of 12 children, my grandmother cared for her siblings as well as her own children at the same time. She then transferred this type of nurturing to her grandchildren. It was common for me and my siblings to be taken care of by my grandmother and great grandmother for entire months at a time, in order to help my mother while she worked. Typical of Mexican Americans "family interdependence involves extended family members sharing the nurturing and disciplining of children" (McGoldrick, Giordano, & Garcia-Preto, 2005, p. 234); yet, my grandmother was not Mexican American. This point became a source of ridicule and ostracizing from her other siblings. This type of racism continued even unto her death three years ago, where at the funeral her siblings sat on the opposite side of the church and never spoke to...

...Ivarsson 1 Victor Ivarsson English 100 – 19 Professor Fisher Essay 4 – draft one December 9, 2014 Intro: The world we live in today is far more globalized than that of our previous generation. Before social media and other instant forms of communication existed, people did not need to worry about speaking a different language or the way it was spoken. Dialects and accents had little meaning because of the barriers that surrounded each community prohibited the inhabitants of much interaction with people from other societies. Today however, people can speak with each other regardless of location, which emphasizes the importance of the power of language. The negative consequences that come from this is that those who do not master a language perfectly or differ from perfect speech are discriminated against in the general community. A phenomenon, which writer Gloria Anzaldúa, who wrote the article “How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” calls “Linguistic Terrorism.” According to her, linguistic terrorism negates not only the speaker, but also the experiences and culture behind that person (Anzaldúa). Thesis: Although language can be used as a tool of power, the use of faulty and imprecise language negates the speaker and causes negative consequences. Body 1, Tan: An accent is an example of imprecise English, which causes people to make negative or positive assumptions about the speaker based on the information that accent reveals. Example: In Amy Tan´s essay “Mother Tongue...

He told me about the credit hours he lost in the transfer and how he didn’t care because he had finally found something he was truly passionate about, not just good at. He continued on and got his degree, but said that there was so much more to learn. He said he had never really considered being a teacher, but wanted a career that would allow him the time to write creatively, without starving. He was specializing in Film in graduate school, when he had a teacher approach him to help teach a sophomore level ‘Intro to Cinema’ class of 180 students. He accepted the offer and it was through this experience that he was introduced to teaching. It was at that moment that he decided to look into teaching as a career, since it would afford him the time during the winter and summer to concentrate on writing. A bachelor's degree is required for a teaching certificate but he also has his Master’s Degree in English. Mr. Uptmore proudly confesses he is a nerd and loves to write. For him, teaching is not just a means of income, it is his purpose in life. Because he knew firsthand how important writing is to receiving a college degree, he has made it his life's work to make sure high school students are prepared for college in their writing skills. Communication in college is achieved through writing, whether it is through essays, research papers, business proposals or simply answering questions on a test. She reminds herself that it is normal to have a wandering mind during meditation. When this happens, she focuses once more on her breath without judgment. In, out. In, out. In, out.
