"The future belongs to the nation that best educates its citizens” stated President Barak Obama in early 2009 as he delivered a speech to fellow Americans on a new education plan in which he praised and applauded the Republic of South Korea’s education system (Quaid Paragraph 4). Obama expressed his aspiration to lengthen school hours and school days for students across the nation by stating that “if they can do that in South Korea, we can do it right here in the United States of America” (Quaid Paragraph 26). However, thousands of miles away in South Korea, citizens were flabbergasted. Individuals spoke up as cartoon artists for Chosun Ilbo voiced their opinions by illustrating two Korean students advising President Obama’s children to ignore everything their father has said about South Korea’s education system. Currently in the United States, approximately 25% of Americans do not graduate high school. While the remaining 75% do graduate with a diploma, on average 30% of them do not attend college (Cookson Paragraph 1). On the other hand, in South Korea a reported 93% of students fully graduated high school and more than half the students went on to college (Lynch Paragraph 3). ...BARACK OBAMA'S SOUTH CAROLINA SPEECH Introduction In this paper, I shall analyze US Presidential hopeful Barack Obama's South Carolina victory speech from a particular pragmatic perspective. In particular, I shall explore the idea that this speech is constituted by many voices (in other words, it displays polyphony, to use an idea due to Bakhtin 1981, 1986) and that the audience is part of this speech event, adding and contributing to its text in a collaborative way (in particular, in constructing meaning). As many are aware (including the journalists who report day by day on Barack Obama's achievements), Obama uses the technique of 'personification' (The Economist, Dec 13th, 2007). When he voices an idea, he does not just expose it as if it came from himself, but gets another person (fictitious or, plausibly, real) to voice it. Since in an electoral speech, he cannot reasonably get people on stage to voice his ideas, he personifies ideas by narrating what people told him. His stories are his way of personifying his ideas. The discourse strategy he uses serves to reverse the direction of influence from the people in control to the people controlled (see van Dijk 2003). Race and ethnicity are not huge factors in the way one expresses themselves. While some associate certain slang verbiage with the African American race, each ethnicity and race have their own “slang” or abbreviations they use. The way we communicate within our social groups connects us to one another. Edward Sapir, in Language: an Introduction to the Study of Speech, stated “Language is the most massive and inclusive art we know, a mountainous and anonymous work of unconscious generations.” Every culture creates their own language, they find a way to clarify themselves amongst each group, whom is to say one language is better than the other. Negative connotations can be placed on the way one speaks due to their background, or ethnicity. If a minority person speaks “well”, along with these negative race connotations, the person is then seen as acting as though they are the “superior” race. Language can connect us, but it can also segregate our defined cultures. Language and behavior tend to be associated with race, class, and popularity.
