In 2005, almost every female on Earth has the book Twilight by Stephanie Meyers. But yet, I don’t have a copy of that book myself. So what’s so special about this particular book that even the New York Times claims it to be the best seller? I’ve decided to go to Barnes and Noble and bought myself the famous first book of the Twilight Saga: Twilight.
To me, the cover looks very plain, but also very mysterious. It makes me wonder why all these girls from ages 15 would and over wants to read a book that has a pair of hands holding a red apple. It made me feel like something is killing the innocence of something. Anyways, so as soon as I got my hands on that book, I actually didn’t bother to read the back of the book. I honestly think the book is going to be boring and pointless to even waste my time on.
I don’t think I’m suppose to spoil this for anyone but Twilight is basically about this girl named Bella left her hometown to live with her dad in Forks for a while. She started going to school in Forks and met Edward, which sooner or later found out that Edward is a vampire and him and his family have been living there for centuries. I actually like this book because of the story line creating an image in your head that makes you feel like you are actually in it. Over all this is a pretty good...

...lofty ideals, the Philippines press from the time of its inception has faced American influence, confiscation of assets for those papers not among the ownership of a former leader, and mistrust of reporters due to shoddy reporting. Newspapers were being published on board American ships as they first entered Manila Bay in 1898. The Bounding Billow was published on board Dewey's flag-ship, and other on-ship U.S. papers included the American Soldier, Freedom and the American, according to the Philippine Journalism Review. These early papers followed U.S. attempts to "civilize" the Filipinos. American journalists in the Philippines went so far as to characterize the natives as "little brown soldiers who enjoyed parading before the patient Americans," and as "a group of warlike tribes who will devour each other when American troops leave." The Americans wasted no time in establishing a press system in the Philippines modeled on that of the one in place in the United States. The Manila Times published its first issue in October 1898, making it the first English-language newspaper in the islands. Newspapers published in the Philippines were under strong American influence and went so far as to champion the annexation of the islands by the United States. Among the newspapers taking this stance were La Democracia and Consolidacion Nacional. Among the papers holding out for independence were El Renacimiento, Muling Pagsilang, El Debate, La Opinion and Los Obreros. Another......

...Linguistics & English Language (University of Edinburgh) 2013-2014 How to Write an Essay in Linguistics The following guidelines range from very general to very specific. They are also more specifically geared toward writing essays in sociolinguistics or empirical methods rather than other areas of linguistics, though many of the same general principles apply. It is to your benefit to try follow these guidelines from the start of your first draft; the closer you follow them, the easier it will be for your instructor to make useful comments on your drafts, focusing on content, rather than style; on linguistics, rather than writing ability. It will also save you a lot of time because there will probably be less restructuring needed between your first draft and your final draft. GENERAL STRUCTURE: 1. Tell us what you’re gonna tell us. 2. Tell us! 3. Tell us what you told us. At a very basic level, this is all you need to know. The main point here is that your paper is not a mystery novel; there should be no ‘big reveal’ at the end. Rather, you want to set up the reader’s expectations so that they know up front what you’re trying to argue and, while reading your paper, will see if they’re convinced by how you make your arguments. The first step roughly corresponds (to the first paragraph of) your introduction and the third step roughly corresponds to (the first paragraph of) your conclusion (remember that this is an art, not a science, and these are......

Critical Review

...and Humanities – Ho Chi Minh City Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature A critical review on an article: STUDENTS’ L1 USE: A STUMBLING BLOCK OR A FACILITATOR IN L2 LEARNING (Yukie Saito, Temple University Japan) Instructor: Nguyen Thi Kieu Thu, Ph.D. Student: Huynh Tran Vuong Chan Class: MA in TESOL 2014A HCMC, 04/2015 INTRODUCTION The development of English has been so dramatic over the past centuries, especially in countries where English is treated as a second language. It is undeniable that for those countries, the chances for students to be exposed to English are limited due to both objective and subjective conditions. The biggest obstacle is mostly counted on L1 intervention and its long standing impact on L2 learning. Therefore, in order to increase these chances, some schools, institutions and even universities have applied the English only policy in English classes for the better learning. And Japan is one these countries. Being interested in the application of this policy and driven by the controversial issue of L1 impact on L2 learning, Yukie Saito, a lecturer at Rikkyo University, has conducted a study on this problem which is later posted on a website for academic teaching and learning: Journal of Second Language Teaching and Research. Yukie’s study on “Students’ L1 use: A stumbling block or a facilitator in L2 learning” is conducted in the situation in which Japan is strictly applying the English-only policy institutionally. As a lecturer......

Purpose and Significance Thanks to the globalization, the demand for the bilingual workers is on the rise. As English majors, we believe that what we can do to be more competitive in this increasingly globalized world is to have a solid command of this language. The certificates such as TEM-8(Test for English Majors Band Eight) is a must but what really matters is what ability the students really have possessed and could be employed at ease. Upon reflecting on the TEM-4 (Test for English Majors Band Four) /TEM-8 scores the seniors have acquired, we clearly learn that there is still quite a room for improvement, especially when it comes to writing. Some students still find it tough to put pen into the paper and work out a satisfactory essay; some are hard-pressed to express themselves smoothly in the......
