Personal Statement - English Literature and Creative Writing

...I am drawn to study English Literature and Creative writing because I am passionate about and committed to reading and writing. I feel that a structured programme of study is imperative for me to achieve my long-term goal of establishing a successful and varied career as a writer. I know that the path I have chosen will often be difficult to walk but I have already taken a step toward its end by starting an Access course. Throughout my short time on the Access course I have gained confidence in my speaking skills. For example, during a recent discussion on gender and relationships in a graded English discussion I raised a point that the teacher had not thought of and was praised for doing so - this taught me that by pushing myself beyond my comfort zone by sharing my ideas and opinions I will be able to achieve my goals. I know that with the skills taught on the Access course I will be able to achieve my goal of studying and completing a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing. The Access course has taught me the importance of self-reflection and criticism through keeping a reflective log which documents my progress, obstacles and goals. I have learnt that I am able to be objective when analysing my own work and performance; this skill has helped me to realise that in order to improve my work I have to be critical of myself and be able to accept criticism from others, I feel that this skill will prepare me for the competitive world of writing. Another skill I have...

We can use the euro star to travel to Spain because each ticket only costs £25. This is the cheapest and fastest way to reach our destination. We may be the school in the UK achieving a pass rate more than 95%; this can make the head teacher proud of you because you’re making everyone reach there maximum potential. Statistics show that the schools that rarely take their students on trips fail. We have records of more than 30% are failing the subject because they aren’t inspired. Purpose and Significance Thanks to the globalization, the demand for the bilingual workers is on the rise. As English majors, we believe that what we can do to be more competitive in this increasingly globalized world is to have a solid command of this language. The certificates such as TEM-8(Test for English Majors Band Eight) is a must but what really matters is what ability the students really have possessed and could be employed at ease. Upon reflecting on the TEM-4 (Test for English Majors Band Four) /TEM-8 scores the seniors have acquired, we clearly learn that there is still quite a room for improvement, especially when it comes to writing. Some students still find it tough to put pen into the paper and work out a satisfactory essay; some are hard-pressed to express themselves smoothly in the writing; still some tend to produce Chin-glish works. Actually, all...

The Relationship Between the English Language Exposures and Common Grammatical Errors in Writing Skills

...Writing is a way of recording language in visible form and giving it relative permanence, as stated by Ignace Jay Gelb and R. M. Whiting (2008). Of the four skills in English, writing is considered to be the most complex and difficult skill to master. This difficulty, according to Richards and Renandya (2002: 303),” lies not only in generating and organizing of ideas but also in translating these ideas into readable texts.” Aside from creativity and cohesion, writing is most effective when it is grammatically accurate or correct. As it is an important helpful skill through which thoughts and ideas are distributed, it serves for instructors of writing in different educational environments to exploit the many different methods, approaches, and techniques that can serve to produce better writers. Although over the preceding decades, the process approach to teaching writing has greatly improved L1 and L2 composition pedagogy especially in terms of creativity and organization. However, these advances have been compromised through the generation of written products containing grammatical and lexical inaccuracies, which often frustrate and distract readers (James 1998:155). That is why grammatical correctness in writing is a problem of concern especially among 4th year college education students as they will be teachers of English themselves upon graduation. According to Jonopolous (1992), Santos (1988), Lorenz and Met (1988), a lack of grammatical accuracy in writing may...

...The escape. I woke up on a summer day, birds chirping, children playing, but all the joy and the innocence of this was behind me. I couldn't just get up and play, or sing, because I was chained to a wall. This is what happens in this country when you commit something really bad. The war finished a few years ago but the situation here wasn’t as beautiful as some people tried to show it. My friends and I were caught by police while we were having my 23rd birthday party. They just came in and took us somewhere. I was lying in my own filth, tied up for several days, without being able to go to the toilet; it's not a pretty sight. My body was slowly wasting away, no food, and only drops of water, I felt like I was slowly passing away even though I still didn’t know where I was or what I had done. I could see my team-mates, my friends, slowly going insane. They were talking in their sleep, screaming for freedom, but what was the point. The guards treated us like animals. Finally, after the next two days the guard unchained me and said, ‘’C’mon you murderer, get up, you are able to go for a 30-minute walk.’’ And after that I realised what had happened. We were caught by police by mistake... I was trying to talk to the guards there but no... They didn’t want to listen, they were just laughing at me. Reflecting on My Experiences with English and Writing!

...Growing up, I had always enjoyed reading and writing. English had never been a problem for me so much as math had been. I had a love for literature. I've always loved reading books. You'd have to pull me away just so I'd put one down. So you can imagine when my fourth grade teacher Ms. Lux said, “you possibly could be held back another year, because you're not performing well in English.” My heart had dropped within that moment. I felt as if I were a failure. I felt as if I, me, someone who had a love for English, was not good enough. I could not understand. I felt rejected. How could I, someone who had enjoyed reading so much, be told that I may not be going to the fifth grade, because of my English scores? I felt in every ounce of my bones that that accusation could not have been right. It was preposterous. She put me through a series of English tests. Testing my abilities from comprehension to grammar, I felt that that this was unfair. I felt that she was singling me out. For what reason I have no clue to this day. Now I had always been a well-behaved kid. I never got into much trouble during my youth years. From the moment I entered her classroom, I felt as If she had a personal vendetta against me. Why was this happening to me? I cried myself into one of the greatest stories I had ever read. It was of the most intriguing adventurous stories ever. Ten year old Moon Blake learns how to survive on his own after his beloved father “Pap” dies, leaving him to fend for himself...

English Creative Writing (Descriptive) - School Bus

...The stench of the young. The moving classroom was filled with it. The surrounding crowd were the producers of said stench. Another name for them would be teenagers. Hormone filled, sex craving teenagers that couldn’t give a single damn what anybody had thought of any of them. He smelt it as he walked into the larger than life van and traded money for a piece of silky paper stating that he was allowed on this particular van at this moment in time. This was routine. He sat down on the seat he claimed as his own, his throne, some might call it. During the process, the man jerked slightly to the left as the bus started gaining momentum. It had begun. Towards the rear end of the bus, there was a man; a tall, slender and sopisticated looking man. What he was doing there was not known to anyone. His looks had made the impression that this tall man was going to work, possibly as an office job. His hairy face and lousy posture could suggest that he did not like the particular job that he held. Surrounding him were the teenagers. What they were doing did not impress the tall man. This had included screaming into his ear holes any names that they had thought of that particular day and spraying their latest up to date ‘smell good powder’ (which clearly does not work) around him. This had not impressed the tall man. The expression upon his face had given the impression that he was bound upon this moving two-story room against his own will. The sex-craving teenagers sensed this upon...
