Today’s organizations can benefit greatly from encouraging a strong entrepreneurial orientation within their business. Oftentimes a large corporation can lose sight of the strong competitive drive that entrepreneurial business people possess. There are a few basic methods that all businesses should follow to promote opportunities: independent action, innovation, competitive aggressiveness, and risk taking.
Independent action encourages employees within an organization to create ideas and implement changes if possible. These changes will then hopefully lead to new products or new profit capabilities. In addition, being able to act independently encourages employees to seek opportunities for improvement because it allows them to receive the recognition personally.
Innovation itself is the building block for entrepreneurial success. It takes innovation to create something of value from opportunity. This is accomplished by being willing to try new ideas and test new theories.
Competitive aggressiveness is necessary in the marketplace. Competition is what pushes a company to become better than its rivals and increase their market share. Competitive aggressiveness pushes a company to find weakness in other companies, and exploit those weaknesses for an advantage. Without competition, employees and companies become complacent and are often overtaken in the market by more aggressive companies.
Risk taking requires some sort of investment on the part of the company, either in labor or finances. This level of risk signifies to employees that they are capable of enacting significant changes to the company if they are able to formulate a plan correctly. Some risk takers are more daring than others, but risk must be taken to discover new methods and new products.
