Ephesians was traditionally attributed to Paul, but most scholars now believe the letter was not written by Paul, but in the Pauline tradition. Disputed authorship does not mean that the epistle is not Scripture, but that it must be interpreted differently than an undisputed letter. Clear references to Ephesians do not appear until later, around 110-120 CE, meaning that this letter was probably written around the late 80s to the early 90s. This book does not read like an ancient letter but more like a teaching document. Importantly, Ephesians lacks the words “in Ephesus” in the earliest greek manuscripts. Furthermore, the book lacks the warm greetings common to the epistles and is general in content. This lack of personalized information …show more content…
Paul emphasizes that the church is one; “one body and one Spirit” and has “one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father.” The chapters leading up to this pericope instruct the church not to spend their time and energy in division, but to live peaceably with one another. This naturally leads into Ephesians 6:10-20; this pericope gives the reason that the church must be united, so that they can put on the armor of God and fight evil within the world, not each other. The letter ends after this pericope with a final …show more content…
The metaphor here is less expansive than it is in Ephesians. The breastplate is “faith and love” and the helmet is “the hope of salvation.” Here, unity is also emphasized, much like Ephesians 6:10-20. Believers are to be separate from non-believers, and united in action. The repeated use of “us” emphasizes this unity. There is similarity between the Thessalonians passage and the Ephesians passage in that both are using the language of soldiers, and neither passage is encouraging offense action. Instead, in both cases, defensive language is used. In Ephesians, the church is to stand firm, and in 1 Thessalonians the church is to be alert, to “keep awake and be sober,” like soldiers on watch. Of course, the most striking difference between the passages is the goal or purpose in putting on the armor. In Ephesians, the goal is to put on the armor to stand against evil, but in 1 Thessalonians, the goal is to be alert for the Lord’s return. Yet both the image of defending and staying alert are united in this imagery of a soldier’s

...the primary doctrines of the Christian faith, and they reflect the heart of the teaching of Grace to You. John MacArthur  ------------------------------------------------- The Holy Scriptures We teach that the Bible is God's written revelation to man, and thus the sixty six books of the Bible given to us by the Holy Spirit constitute the plenary (inspired equally in all parts) Word of God (1 Corinthians 2:7-14; 2 Peter 1:20-21). We teach that the Word of God is an objective, propositional revelation (1 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Corinthians 2:13), verbally inspired in every word (2 Timothy 3:16), absolutely inerrant in the original documents, infallible, and God-breathed. We teach the literal, grammatical-historical interpretation of Scripture which affirms the belief that the opening chapters of Genesis present creation in six literal days (Genesis 1:31; Exodus 31:17). We teach that the Bible constitutes the only infallible rule of faith and practice (Matthew 5:18; 24:35; John 10:35; 16:12-13;17:17; 1 Corinthians 2:13; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Peter 1:20-21). God'D Divine Order

...to look at several verses in Ephesians starting with the first chapter. Divine order is very important, and we find it all the way through the Scriptures. There is a very simple reason for God using divine order like He does. It is because God's plans are carried out by men. He works through His people. Thus, divine order becomes most important and necessary. Divine order is clearly seen in the life of Jesus Christ. Couldn't God have saved mankind without working through an individual? Couldn't He have spoken a word and accomplished it as He did with the creation of the world? Either it was not possible or He just simply chose not to do it that way. In His wisdom He chose to save man by becoming man. Jesus was the answer to everything. He said, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by Me. John 14:6. No man can come unto God except through Jesus; that is divine order. It can't be done any other way. Everything has to be done exactly the way God wants it done. Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of Me,) to do Thy will, O God. Hebrews 10:7. Again, I can of Mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and My judgment is just; because I seek not My own will, but the will of the Father which has sent me. John 5:30. Again, Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of Myself: but the Father that dwells in Me, He does the works. John 14:10. In other words, Jesus was totally...

The Holy Spirit

...The Holy Spirit “…Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.” Ephesians 1:13 (see also 4:30; 2 Cor 1:22) When Jesus went back to His father, He did not abandon us as spiritual orphans in the world. He sent us his Holy Spirit into our lives. The Holy Spirit is the personal presence of God. “…I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.. I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you…” John 14:16-18;16:5-7 (read Acts 2:1-4). The Holy Spirit is one of the three Persons of the Godhead (Matthew 28:19). That means that although the Holy Spirit is distinct from the Father and the Son, He is indeed God (note Peter’s words in Acts 5:3-4 and John’s description of Jesus in John 1:1-2). All three Persons are actively involved in the process of salvation, as shown in the scripture: “For through [Jesus] we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.” Ephesians 2:18 THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT “We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.” 1 John 4:13 The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to every believer. When a person personally receives Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, the Holy Spirit comes to live on the inside, imparting spiritual life. “Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized...

Be Angry and Sin Not

...problem with anger? What is the danger? A. Bible Examples of Acceptable Anger Some people assume that Christians should never show signs of a temper. If a Christian raises his voice or becomes visibly upset, some people think or act as though he violated his duty as a Christian. Consider: God is angry with sin. Psalm 7:11 - Because He is a just God, God is angry with sinners every day. Surely God's anger is not wrong. It is proper, for it is even based on His justice. Many other passages show that God is angry when people commit sin. He will punish sinners in wrath. If God is infinitely righteous yet is often angry, why should we conclude that people are always wrong when they are angry? [Romans 1:18; 2:5-9; 5:6-11; Ephesians 5:6; Colossians 3:6; John 3:36; etc.] Moses was angry with sin. The Bible says Moses was more meek than anyone else on earth (Num. 12:3), yet several times he acted and spoke in great anger. Exodus 11:4-8 - Moses predicted that God would destroy the...
