...He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided. That night Rainsford was thinking of how he was going to get off this doomed island. He thought of signaling for help with fire, but he had no way of lighting a fire. He came up with the next best idea to swim off the island. As Rainsford woke up he heard the sounds of the dogs barking. “Shut up you stupid hounds. I am trying to have a peaceful morning. But, it continued to the point that Rainsford took a gun from the General’s collection and shot a dog. BANG. As the dog fell to the firm ground, all the other dogs stood still. “Finally, some peace and quiet. I guess the way to get it is by shooting.” Rainsford scavenged the kitchen and only saw a box of oatmeal.
