Erythropoietin produceres naturligt i nyren. Erythroproietin er et glycoprotein hormon, som stimulere knogle marven til producere flere røde blodlegemer. De røde blodlegemer er nødvendige for at tranportere ilt ud til musklerne.
c)
Når nyren registrerer et lavt indhold af ilt i blodet, producere den flere Erythropoietin hormoner, som så sørger for at der bliver produceret flere røde blodlegemer. Hvis nyren registrere høj koncentration af ilt i blodet, nedsætter den derimod produktionen af erythropoietin.
d)
For at teste misbrug af EPO blandt sportsudøvere, taler man om hæmokritværdien. Hæmokritværdien angiver hvor mange røde blodlegemer der er i blodet. For mænd ligger hæmokritværdien omkring 40% normalt. UCI har tilladt hæmokritværdier op til 50%.

Man kan også fastslå om Epo’en indeholder et bestemt sukkermolekyle som kun fremgår af den naturlige EPO, der er dog en gruppe mennesker hvis naturlige EPO ikke indeholder dette. Så det skal tjekkes først, for derefter er metoden 100% sikker.
e)
Som vi kan se ud fra undersøgelsen, har de 8 personer der har været på EPO , en meget større præstations evne. De har for det første en meget forhøjet hæmatokritværdi, i forhold til kontrolgruppen, hvilket gør at de kan få transporteret mere ilt til musklerne.

f)
I opgaven er der brugt både kvalitative og kvantitative metoder. I opgave a-d er det mest den kvalitative metode der er brugt, da man undersøger den proces der sker når Erythroprotein produceres i nyren. I e er det mere en kvantitativ metode, da man tager udgangspunkt i en undersøgelse og ud fra denne skal finde nogen konklusioner.
