Equities till Old Age Do us Part
Invest in equities, they said; make lots of money, they said. Look at you now, with pennies in your pockets: no treasure trove there. Might as well shoot dice... Here’s the thing: the stock market can be quite unhomely to those that jump into it for a quick dip. Those who stick to it for at least two decades can fare better, but are they necessarily safer? The truth is that you’ve got to be willing to get your noodle in gear if you want to make some cash. After all, there’s no such thing as money for nothing (unless you’re Mark Knopfler or the Federal Reserve). Not to say that it’s rocket science; in a perfect world, a stock’s price tag should reflect what a company’s expected future earnings are. Expected, as in what we think; not what we know. Who knows, North Korea could misguide a missile onto Acme Corporation’s factory tomorrow and by that destroy the company’s main stream of revenue; its operations. This is why we take risk into the equation when valuating stocks. Those that are up for this challenge may consider that history has rewarded those who have stuck in there for the long haul. How true is this? The US’s equity market is the ideal lab rat because it has proven to give some of the highest returns and the lowest spread (read: risk) over the last century, corrected for its currency’s loss of value over the years (i.e. inflation). In other words, it was one of the “safer” places to put your money. Mind you, safe is to many a mixture of returns that surpass inflation, and low volatility, rather than just the latter. If we put the last century’s performance under the microscope, we can play around so as to see what would have happened if you invested anywhere from 10 years strait to 103 years (behold, the cards that were dealt to us for this inquiry). We find that if you did in fact hold stock for 20 years or more, you would

...method of teaching used in management education is quite different from most of the methods of teaching used at the school and undergraduate course levels. Unlike traditional lecture-based teaching where student participation in the classroom is minimal, the case method is an active learning method, which requires participation and involvement from the student in the classroom. For students who have been exposed only to the traditional teaching methods, this calls for a major change in their approach to learning. This introduction is intended to provide students with some basic information about the case method, and guidelines about what they must do to gain the maximum benefit from the method. We begin by taking a brief look at what case studies are, and how they are used in the classroom. Then we discuss what the student needs to do to prepare for a class, and what she can expect during the case discussion. We also explain how student performance is evaluated in a case study based course. Finally, we describe the benefits a student of management can expect to gain through the use of the case method. WHAT IS A CASE STUDY? There is no universally accepted definition for a case study, and the case method means different things to different people. Consequently, all case studies are not structured similarly, and variations abound in terms of style, structure and approach. Case material ranges from small caselets (a few paragraphs to one-two pages) to short cases (four to six...

...Consideration and Promissory Estoppel The Formation of a Contract 3 Consideration and Promissory Estoppel 1. CONSIDERATION In general, agreements or promises are contractually binding in English law only if supported by consideration. The requirement of consideration means that each party must receive or be promised something in return for giving or promising something. Consideration is, therefore, the legal description of the element of exchange and its practical effect is to ensure that gratuitous promises are not binding whereas bargains are. So if A promises B £1000, B cannot enforce that promise because B has provided no consideration (nothing in exchange) for it. It is traditional to define consideration as a benefit to the promisor or a detriment to the promisee. So in Currie v Misa (1875) LR 10 Ex 153, 162 Lush J stated, ‘A valuable consideration, in the sense of the law, may consist either in some right, interest, profit, or benefit accruing to the one party, or some forbearance, detriment, loss, or responsibility, given, suffered, or undertaken by the other.’ This definition can be misleading unless one emphasises, in line with the need for an exchange, that the detriment to the promisee must be requested by the promisor. So if A promises B £1000 and B, in reliance on receiving that money, buys a car, that may constitute detrimental reliance by B but B has not thereby provided any consideration for A’s promise. In contrast, if A promises B £1000 in return for B’s car (ie...

...CONTE N T S CHAI R M A N ’ S LETTE R DEAR SH AREH OL DERS FY2012 has been a good year for your Company. The key financial results were: ¥ Consolidated revenues increased by 30% to Rs. 96.7 billion in FY2012. ¥ Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA)1 rose by 55% to Rs. 25.4 billion. ¥ Profit after Tax (PAT)2 grew by 45% to Rs. 15.3 billion. ¥ Diluted Earnings per Share (EPS) increased from Rs. 64.9 in FY2011 to Rs. 83.8 in FY2012. Dr. Reddy’s launched olanzapine 20 mg tablets, the generic version of the brand Zyprexa®. Olanzapine is used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This product has added around USD 100 million to your Company’s revenues for FY2012. Second, the biosimilars business continues along its impressive growth path. In my letter to you last year, I had discussed the critical importance of developing biosimilars in the years to come. I am happy to note that your Company’s global biosimilars business grew by 45% over last year and recorded sales of USD 26 million. Today, the biosimilars portfolio of Dr. Reddy’s constitutes (i) filgrastim, (ii) peg-filgrastim, (iii) rituximab and (iv) darbepoetin alfa, which have commercial presence in 13 countries among emerging markets. These are helping to treat patients suffering from cancer — and at prices that...
