How come Eratosthenes of Cyrene 3rd century BCE was left out of the equation? (Excuse the pun). By some coincidence, he was located in Alexandria in the famous Library of Alexandria built by Ptolemy. Eratostheneshypothesised that Syene must lie 7°14’ along a curve from Alexandria. He knew that a circle contained 360°, which meant that his calculation 7°14’ was roughly 1/5 of a circle.
