Erikson states several ideas that apply to the scenario we are looking at. Within his key concepts, he creates stages of development that can be applied. We are not really told what Drew’s disability is, only that he has been home schooled with county supervision all of his life, and under his mother care and direction. Drew is entering adolescence at the same time his parents are entering their own stage of life crisis. Drew’s social needs are changing from Child hood to puberty and adolescence and social needs are changing. Ericson would also apply his idea of significant relationships to draws crisis. The fact that he is developmentally disabled has little influence on his changing social needs. His only sphere of influence has been …show more content…
With all of their children grown, or nearly grown, they are nearing retirement age. Ericson would apply his ideas of a Psycho-Social Crisis to the dynamic that Lucy and Tom are experiencing, as they are getting older. As a crisis of life stage, they are ready to look forward to retiring. Thom has experienced downsizing and a demotion, which has challenged the family financially. Tom is required to travel more changing the dynamic of the home forcing Lucy to handle more of her son Drew’s behavior alone. The increased stress may be contributing to her heart palpitations, nausea, night sweats, and nightmares. Lucy should also see her Doctor to be certain she does not have further health problems associated to the night sweats. It is likely most of her symptoms are related to the stress and changed she is experiencing at home. Ericson idea of hope also plays a role in this scenario. Hopefulness allows a person to move towards goals and to believe in a better feature. Hope plays a part in this scenario in that Drew’s parent must be hopeful that their son Drew will begin to seek out and discover his own future apart from his parents. Drew’s parents may not be able to care for him for much longer. They should begin to socialize him with education and socialization with peers who are striving for a future of their

I asked her to think about her first ten years of life and to describe times that she can remember being cared for. She said that it was her grandmother that did most of the caretaking for her, especially when she was sick. She recalled one time when she had a really bad sinus infection that her grandmother helped her through. ...Eric Erickson and Sigmund Freud both believed there are stages in personality development with few differences. The Erickson theory is composed of eight stages that a normal human will go through from birth until death or one lifetime. Each of these stages can be related to different characters so it is easier to relate to. Trust Versus Mistrust The first stage of Erickson’s theory is trust versus mistrust. This stage is from birth to one year old and is based on the baby’s environment and the baby’s primary care giver. During this period, the baby builds a feeling of basic trust. If the baby’s primary care giver is consistent, predictable, and reliable, then, most likely the baby will carry this trust into other relationships, hoping for the best, developing a sense of trust in the world around them. On the other hand, if the baby is subject to the opposite, in a relationship with the primary caregiver that has been unkind, fickle, and unreliable then the child will develop a sense of mistrust. This will lead the baby down a horrible path and will not have confidence in the world around them or in their abilities to influence events resulting in a sense of mistrust into other relationships.
