Essays are generally scholarly pieces of writing written from an author's personal point of view, but the definition is vague, overlapping with those of an article, a pamphlet and a short story.
Essays can consist of a number of elements, including: literary criticism, political manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. Almost all modern essays are written in prose, but works in verse have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope's An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population are counterexamples. In some countries (e.g., the United States and Canada), essays have become a major part of formal education. Secondary students are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and admission essays are often used by universities in selecting applicants and, in the humanities and social sciences, as a way of assessing the performance of students during final exams.
The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary film making styles and which focuses more on the evolution of a theme or an idea. A photographic essay is an attempt to cover a topic with a linked series of photographs; it may or may not have an accompanying text or captions.

...PAPER FORMAT, PHIL 1300, with Piers Norris Turner Final paper instructions: Below is the paper format for your final papers—which I hope will help you all write successful papers. You may select any argument from the authors or class discussion up to the paper deadline. It need not be an author’s central argument, but any argument that struck you as true or false but which you thought needed further defense or further criticism. The point is to take an argumentative stand—that is, commit to a certain argument either for or against something—and show that you can defend taking that stand. I. Short thesis paragraph: No more than two or three sentences stating what claim you intend to defend. E.g.: “In this paper I will argue that the utilitarian account of animal rights can be defended against the objection that…” or “In this paper I will argue that Rachels’ argument in favor of active euthanasia fails to establish that…”. Note that the thesis should be quite limited in scope, as indicated here. You should not try to settle a whole practical problem, but just engage in a clear and focused way on a particular line of argument. II. Positive argument (be concise, but it could be more than one paragraph): A clear and concise rendering of your positive argument for your thesis. Give a step by step argument for your conclusion, i.e. tell us clearly how you are trying to reinforce or reject a certain line of argument. III. First Objection (could be multiple......

...GOOD PARAGRAPH DEVELOPMENT: AS EASY AS P.I.E. A paragraph is a group of related sentences detailing one clear point related to your thesis. A good paragraph is thoughtful, unified, coherent, and well-developed. If you are having trouble developing or explaining your key points within your paragraphs, check to see if your paragraphs have these three essential structural parts: a point, information, and an explanation. One way to understand and remember paragraph structure is to think of the word P.I.E. P = Point I = Information E = Explanation Point Often, the point is the TOPIC SENTENCE. What is the point of this paragraph? What claim is being made? What will this paragraph prove or discuss? Information The information is the EVIDENCE used to support/develop the point. How is the point supported with specific data, experiences, or other factual material? What examples can you use to support your point? ...This set of 28 questions, taken from prior examinations, covers topics in Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The purpose of sample multiple choice questions is to acquaint you with the style and substance of typical exam questions over this material. Please be aware that: 1. multiple choice format questions are only one of many resources available to prepare for testing events – reading textbook chapters and working through chapter examples, studying the end-of-chapter review problem and accompanying solution, and reviewing assigned homework items and the published solutions may be more powerful methods to increase your understanding of the topics covered in the course. 2. the exam questions used this quarter will be similar but different from these example questions – understanding the main concepts in each chapter is critical to success on the testing events; remembering a sample question may be of some help but the format of a question on the same topic often differs rendering memory a distant second choice to understanding. The Questions: 6. Scheney Company uses the weighted-average method in its process costing system. The company's work in process inventory on March 31 consisted of 20,000 units. The units in the ending work in process inventory were 100% complete with respect to materials and 70% complete with respect to labor and overhead. ...1.What should be the format and final form of the store manager's job description? In my opinion, there is no format or final form of the job description. But the store manager’s job description should include the job identification, job summary, responsibilities and duties, authority of incumbent, the standards of performance, working conditions and Job specifications. I recommend that Jennifer include standards of of performance section in job description. In this, the standards that the employee expected to be achieved under each job description’s main duties and responsibilities, is listed. It will also address the problem of employees such as not understanding the company policies, procedures, and expectations. In addition I recommend that Jennifer should take a competency-based approach instead. This competency based approach describes the job in terms of the measurable, observable, behavioral competencies that an employee who perform the job must have. The competency analysis is more worker focused. This is due to it focuses more on ‘how’ the worker meets the job’s objective or actually accomplishes the work. 4.
