Hackneys and dispersing multitudes filled the sunset of Siltzony as Jeanny Linats and her best friend Heather walked across the city. Washed-out houses and walls upholstered with worn-out portraits of missing people paved the Northway Street leading to the Golden Tower.
“Can you arrest someone?”
“No.” Jeanny shook her head.
“But you can shoot them?” Heather wrinkled her otherwise smooth face.
“Only inside the tower.”
“Will you be completely alone?”
“Not all the time. I’ll have Nora checking on me every few hours.”
Heather leaned in and whispered, “Will Lewis be there?”
Jeanny rolled her eyes and stayed silent.

Jeanny shook her head, daydreaming could wait, the giant clock tower in front of her could not.
Located at the northern edge of the city, the Golden Tower had earned its name originally due to the vivid ocher color of its walls, and over the years, Siltzony had tried to push the fame of the name by painting everything yellow, from benches and doors to flower pots and the tree trunks on the outside plaza. Jeanny never knew if it had actually helped in making the tower more famous, but the gold theme had remained to this day.
Jeanny pulled the keys and opened a huge steel portal, one of four the tower had, each one stained and uncared for, except for the locks, which were shiny new.
She came face to face with Nora, who was coming out.
“Hi sweetie,” said Nora. She was the kind of woman who could be kind and pleasant to anyone, but still had enough character and training to impose authority—or kick your ass—if necessary. “I was just making sure there was no one left inside.”
