Climate Essay

...Climate Essay Arlene Jernigan HCS/131 August 10, 2015 Joseph W. Hussar III Climate Essay The active listening that must take place in the workplace goes beyond just the hearing of the words that are spoken by the sender. In the business world, listening skills are acknowledged as a means "to improve customer satisfaction, build partnerships, and maintain relationships among supervisors and employees" (Shipley, 2010, p. 126). It is for this reason that management and staff alike, work together to improve its existence in the workplace. Active listening is a skill that must be cultivated and developed further; we are born with the ability to speak and hear but not the ability to listen. Each one of the listening steps such as receiving, interpreting, remembering, evaluating and responding has to be followed properly for listening to become effective; therefore, listening is an active process. It takes a conscious effort to put aside first impressions of verbal and nonverbal cues and listen to what is being said. In the workplace, this may be difficult because of the differences in management styles and workplace dynamics. However, it can be a learned skill and be practiced in every aspect of life, including where we work. The more active listening that occurs opens the doors to better communication overall. During the process of actively listening, the receiver of the message concentrates on what is being conveyed by the messenger. He or she stops talking, maintains...

Evaluations of Councelling

...This essay is a reflective evaluation of the skills of counselling applied to loss and grief in a student’s process of learning how to travel the journey of the therapeutic relationship with the client. The essay will contain reflections of verbatim examples from during the practice session in which Steven Felice is the client, and Caroline Roberts the counsellor. The essay will also discuss via relevant literature the process of person-centred counselling in the focus of loss through bonds of attachment and continuing bonds. The practice session took place in counselling room two, at ACAP on the 21st of April 2010, between Steven Felice and Caroline Roberts. Steven wanted to discuss the loss of a friendship. This friendship for Steven was a friendship that had begun in early childhood and carried a deep bond of attachment, for which Steven is finding the loss hard to accept. During the session I spent the majority of the time listening to Steven and reflecting as best I could the content and emotion of his experience. When dealing with loss in relation to friendships it is important to offer the client the same respect to emotional depth of expression as that of a person experiencing loss from a death. For Steven the loss of significance surrounded his childhood friend no longer wishing to be as close as usual due to her recent change of religious affiliation. For Steven this seems difficult to accept, as he was willing to try to understand and acknowledge her needs and...

Business Communications

...another and is a continuous process where “we constantly send and receive verbal and nonverbal messages” (Yoder et al. 1996 p.16). In this essay I will analyse a workplace meeting that I participated in using the Gamble and Gamble model of communication, whilst incorporating other theories and models. Subsequently, recommendations on my observations and furthermore, what i believe can improve my communication skills in the future will conclude my essay. At 11am on the 10th September 2009, I participated in a meeting in the offices of Super-serve Financial. This meeting involved myself, my manager Mr. Smith and five other colleagues. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss financial year-end Budgets and work place issues. Mr. Smith commenced the meeting right away although one final member had still not yet arrived. Mr. Smith came prepared and discussed the agenda of the meeting received previously. I skimmed through the agenda beforehand, and based on the subject matter I had already formed an opinion and had decided it was of no interest to me. As Gibson & Hodgett (1990) state, I had demonstrated poor listening skills As I glanced around the room a couple of colleagues seemed disinterested and distracted. I found myself pretending to pay attention, as Gibson and Hodgett (1990) suggest in their theories on ineffective listening habits. Gamble and Gamble (2008) also argue internal noise such as daydreaming contributes to the distribution of the communication channel...

Effective Communicaion

...effective communication skills in nursing. Communication is the base for everything done in everyday life as well as in professional practice. What and how something is said will send a number of messages to the receiver; these messages are sent and received both knowingly and unknowingly (Sully and Dallas, 2005). Nurses evidently deal more with patients than any other health care worker (McCabe and Timmins 2006), therefore it is very important that effective communication skills are developed, as they will be supporting the patients, the relatives and then communicating back to other health care workers. This essay will be looking at the importance of developing effective non verbal communication skills, the effect different levels of communication has on patients, and adapting communication skills where barriers exist. Communication is both verbal and non verbal, Verbal communication is often seen as the most important form of communication (McCabe and Timmins, 2006). However when people are communicating, words make up only seven percent of the message. The other ninety three percent is made up by how the message is said, the tone of the message and body language (Argyle, 1989 cited by McCabe and Timmins, 2006). So from looking at the information Argyle presents, it is clear to see that non verbal communication has much more of an impact than verbal communication. Although what is said will still have to have meaning and be appropriate. Non verbal skills need to be developed...

My Experiences of Learning Communication

...My Experiences of Learning Communication Skills A well known proverb goes “Experience is The Best Teacher.” You might be wondering how this proverb holds true for the given topic. Well, communication skills are all about learning from various experiences of life. Communication Skills can be defined as skills that facilitate communication. Communication is synonymous to life, hence learning Communication Skills is inevitable. One starts learning Communication Skills since he starts living. Even to breathe a new born baby starts crying. Basically, these skills are known to every human being. It is just that we realize them. For example you don’t teach a baby how to cry. What we learn are some tactics or ways that will improve our communication skills. Communication Skills includes basically four skills, i.e. Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Listening is one of the most important skills in communication. But sometimes poor listening and premature evaluation hampers the communication process. Poor listening means non-attentive, non-evaluative and non-empathic listening. In business, communication is hampered when the receiver evaluates the message before getting the complete information. This happens particularly when one receives new ideas. Human mind resist change hence inattentive listening is done. The best example of poor listening is in the Parliament where a minister is presenting some new idea for the welfare of the country. The other members are not empathic...

What Is Counselling

...Introduction This essay will reflect on counselling, and include what I think that is, and how it differs from other forms of helping. I will analyse and compare the different types of counselling, giving specific examples of how they vary from each other. This essay will also evaluate some of my personal experiences of having professional counselling which will enable the reader to gain an authentic perspective from the clients viewpoint. This essay will also state some of my own perspectives on what counselling is and what counselling has done for me personally. I will also demonstrate my understanding of the laws and legal implications of counselling Counselling can be a complex and abstract subject. Everyone has their own opinions on what counselling is. I am currently a student at Ty Elis training to be an integrative counsellor. This means that the therapist uses an approach which uses element from different forms of counselling and psychotherapy. After being a client and receiving personal therapy for a period of 18 months and now having started training to be a therapist myself, my own views on counselling have changed considerably. The BACP defines counselling as “Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or long term to help them bring about effective or enhance their wellbeing”. Before I explain the different types of counselling...

Best Manager

...sure that the office is taken care of to the best of their ability. That is a reason why I’m interested in how to be a good manager. Firstly, a manager needs thirty skills to be successed: Communication, Listening skills, commitment for a truth, empathy, persuasion, leadership, focus, division of work, obstacle removal, heat absorption, uncertainty removal, project management, and administrative and Financial Skills. Communication, listening skills, and commitment for a truth are the most significant for a manager. Now, I would like to focus on communication first. There’s a lot of communication when you’re a manager. You have to communicate with each of your employees. You have to communicate “sideways” with your co-workers and customers. And you have to communicate upwards with your own manager or executive. You need some substance in the communication, of course — you need to have something worthy of being communicated. But substance isn’t enough — if you know what you’re doing and can’t properly communicate it to anyone else, then you’ll never be a good manager. Secondly is listening skills. This is a part of communication, but I want to single it out because it’s so important. Some managers get so impressed with themselves that they spend much more of their time telling people things than they spend listening. But no matter how high you go in the management hierarchy, you need to be able to listen. It’s the only way you’re really going to find out what’s going on in your...

Study Skills

...------------------------------------------------- Study skills From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Study skills or study strategies are approaches applied to learning. They are generally critical to success in school,[1] considered essential for acquiring good grades, and useful for learning throughout one's life. There are an array of study skills, which may tackle the process of organizing and taking in new information, retaining information, or dealing with assessments. They include mnemonics, which aid the retention of lists of information, effective reading and concentration techniques,[2] as well as efficient notetaking.[3] While often left up to the student and their support network, study skills are increasingly taught in High School and at the University level. A number of books and websites are available, from works on specific techniques such as Tony Buzan's books on mind-mapping, to general guides to successful study such as those by Stella Cottrell. More broadly, any skill which boosts a person's ability to study and pass exams can be termed a study skill, and this could include time management and motivational techniques. Study Skills are discrete techniques that can be learned, usually in a short time, and applied to all or most fields of study. They must therefore be distinguished from strategies that are specific to a particular field of study e.g. music or technology, and from abilities inherent in the student, such as aspects of intelligence or learning...
