Lorenzo’s Oil is a movie about a boy who was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy, or ALD. This condition is a genetic brain disorder that destroys myelin, a protective sheath that surrounds the brain's neurons, which control the person’s muscles. However, during the time Lorenzo had ALD, there weren’t many available treatments that can slow down or cure his disease, making his parents go on a mission to find information about ALD. Although the Odones found many results, physicians and parent support groups failed to acknowledge their findings, making them seem careless. Some of their objections included them not having enough money to fund research for the disease and parents not wanting their child to suffer anymore. I believe their objection were somewhat reasonable because finding money for treatments can be difficult, but by stopping to try to find a cure is not. Parents and doctors should not lose hope no matter how challenging it is. Despite the lack of support, the Odones decided to test their hypotheses on themselves. Now, I wouldn’t say this was a complete good idea because of all the dangers that could’ve happen. On the other hand, I am okay with the fact researchers test other patients with their new-found treatments. Physicians are required to make sure anything in the …show more content…
By saying this, I believe this reason is utterly incompetent. There are hundreds of deadly illnesses out there, but only a few have actual treatments. People have died from ALD and nothing is being done to change it. I believe the government should develop a new policy that can offer profit to diseases like ALD. I would like to research more about some rare diseases to make sure we do not make a big mistake like the ALD foundation from the movie because, the saturated and unsaturated fats are raising a lot due to the diet the family have to use. The Odone family were able to do the research to keep Lorenzo’s fatty acid chain to be normal. Michaela should not feel guilty that it was her genes that contained the defect that caused Lorenzo to have ALD. Everyone needs a person to help them out at certain times. Just in case if the treatments do not work or if people are being jerks to you if the treatment is not working properly, just do some research even though it takes a long time and it always be worth it. Eva Ibbotson - a Company of Swans

...A Company of Swans Chapter One There was no lovelier view in England, Harriet knew this. To her right, the soaring towers of King's College Chapel and the immaculate lawns sloping down to the river's edge; to her left, the blue and gold of the scillas and daffodils splashed in rich abundance between the trees of the Fellows' Gardens. Yet as she leaned over the stone parapet of the bridge on which she stood, her face was pensive and her feet— and this was unusual in the daughter of a professor of classics in the year 1912— were folded in the fifth position. She was a thin girl, brown-haired and brown-eyed, whose gravity and gentleness could not always conceal her questing spirit and eagerness for life. Sensibly dressed in a blue caped coat and tarn o'shanter bought to last, a leather music case propped against the wall beside her, she was a familiar figure to the passers-by: to ancient Dr. Ferguson, tottering across the willow-fringed bridge in inner pursuit of an errant Indo-Germanic verb; to a gardener trimming the edges of the grass, who raised his cap to her. Professor Morton's clever daughter; Miss Morton's biddable niece. To grow up in Cambridge was to be fortunate indeed. To be able to look at this marvelous city each day was a blessing of which one should never tire. Harriet, crumbling bread into the water for the world's most blase ducks, had told herself this again and again. But it is not cities which make the destinies of eighteen-year-old girls, it is people— and...
