Essay On Open Borders

What would happen if the United States suddenly stopped building walls and instead flung open its borders, not unlike the European Union has done among the member countries of the common market? Conservatives malign the notion and liberals, even radical ones, haven’t exactly embraced the “open borders” concept.
Open borders are the norm for borders between subdivisions within the boundaries of sovereign states, though some countries do have controlled borders within the boundaries of the state (for example in the People's Republic of China between the mainland and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau). Open borders are also usual between member states of federations (such as the United States of America), though again in some instances movement between member states may be controlled …show more content…
immigration system as “broken.” If what we’re doing doesn’t work, why not try something different? There’s a notion that in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Europeans immigrated to the U.S. legally. But “legally” meant something very different than it does now. At that time, the United States accepted practically everyone who showed up, with few restrictions other than the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act and a brief health examination. The foreign-born share of the population, 12.9 percent, is lower today than it was during the entire period from 1860 to 1920, according to data published by the Brookings Institution. There’s a notion that in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Europeans immigrated to the U.S. legally. The Positive And Negative Impacts Of Globalization In Trinidad And Tobago

...The three pros of the aforementioned statement include: 1.It encourages free trade - When a country is deprived of borders, they incur an unlimited variety of discounted consumer and industrialized goods and services. Intrinsically, fewer barriers, like tariffs, sales taxes, or subsidies are implemented since there isn’t a country to add borders ("22 Globalization Pros and Cons", 2017). For example, In Trinidad and Tobago, tariffs are now countless and theoretically possesses the preeminent market for imported consumer goods in CARICOM. It furthermore offers the local producers a final opportunity in the market. Though, it is a momentary measure, it enforces on the overseas producers to be economical, if they desire to recapture the CARICOM...

The Hunt for Seasonal Workers Crosses Borders

...The Hunt for Seasonal Workers Crosses Borders Shelia Broadwater Kaplan University AB203: Human Resources Management Ah Young February 16, 2013 The Hunt for Seasonal Workers Crosses Borders Lots of companies encounter the challenge of finding seasonal workers. These seasonal workers are needed during the companies’ sales peak, when a company needs to produce and, or provide service within a certain period of time. Seasonal workers are excessive resources for a company that needs to increase the amount of workers in their workforce during sale peak throughout the year. The peak in the demand for labor is too steep to handle with overtime, and the type of work can’t be outsourced to dishwashers or lifeguards in another location. The main option for employers is to find workers who want a summer job. (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2009). If companies cannot fill vacant seasonal jobs with workers under the H-2B visas, the companies could use temporary employees or fill positions by outsourcing. Using temporary employees and outsourcing do not build an in-house pool of talent, but by these means staffing levels can be quickly and easily modified” (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2009). Overtime is also a temporary solution but may exhaust the company’s employees. It is the companies’ decision to choose which solution works best in each case. For short-term labor peaks overtime may be the solution but for a longer season temporary employees...

Stereotypes In The Tortilla Curtain

...According to the essay “The Tortilla Curtain: War on the Table of the Poor” Eliseo Perez-Alvarez states, “This border is the busiest in the world, with an estimated one million crossing a day” (19). What will a wall help to prevent? Will it help to ease the crimes from occurring in the world ? or will it help to diminish the racism, stereotype that most immigrant encounter? There should not be any wall, since it does not benefit society, therefore, it should remain as it is, even if it is one of the busiest borders in the world, because people are trying to improve themselves, which the majority of US Citizens failed to acknowledge, including Trump, who is trying to build a wall to prevent Mexicans from entering the nation. In fact, if their hometown were nutritious, then, they will not have to come to the United States to try to live the American...

Threshold Experiences in My Antonia

...Threshold experiences in the novels My Antonia and The Age of Innocence In any a piece of literature setting is an essential pillar of narrative construction: it not only includes some factual information about time and place or provides the background in which the events take place, but also has the power to shape the habits and attitudes of their users, or characters.    Both Willa Cather in My Antonia and Edith Wharton in The Age of Innocence create the particular narrative texture that implicates some dynamics, i.e. some shifts and changes – on the one hand, the setting of the novels continually changes, and this invariably entails the changing of the characters. Since the setting doesn’t remain static, each time it changes there should be some “turning point”, from which moment on the further development of events becomes completely different. But what exactly this turning point is, what are those “triggers” that help to create this dynamic picture, how can we trace the changes and the molding and development of characters’ personalities, the changes of their identities? The thing is that the authors of both above-mentioned novels create series of “threshold experiences” taking place at the most significant, climatic points in the lives of the protagonists, acting like triggers, indicating some transformations in the outer world of the characters that entail the changes in their inner world as well. These thresholds operate on all levels: separating the interior...

Borderlands, La Frontera

...the rich nature of her writing and the amount of energy she feels while writing this poem. Anzaldua, who as both a woman and a Chicana, grew up in an atmosphere of oppression and confusion. "It's not a comfortable territory to live in, this place of contradictions,", "Hatred, anger and exploitation are the prominent features of this landscape." It is also a landscape where the question "Who Am I?" is not readily or easily answered. "The culture and the Church insist that women are subservient to males." I know it’s weird for a male to be reading about women’s rights, but it’s actually pretty interesting to see how other people deal with their personal battles. Anzaldúa begins the book by using imagery to illustrate the incredible pain the border has brought to the mestizos by both dividing their culture and fencing...

...is economics, culture and basic communication. articlemarket.blogspot.com Globalisation has an impacted on culture, by making culture known to the wider world seeks to legitimize it and make new epistemes. Instead of expanding our global space globalization seeks to make the global experience more intimate. Urbanization is the product of globalization when people move from the edges usually consisting of the countryside they are drawn to these centers (megalopolis). www.communicationagents.com The influx of people lead to city growth and further development and a bi-product of this urbanization is that of physical and mental displacement. Globalization and borders are linked, within this movement the world is being brought closer together and both physical and mental boundaries/borders are being erected, changed or removed totally. The Internet is a virtual example of globalization where it also seeks to bring information worldwide closer to us throughout computer screens. The world is getting smaller every day, even to become a global village; this is one way to simplify globalization. The west proclaims it culture to be most acceptable and accessible and...

The 2009 Chrysler-Fiat Strategic Alliance

...financial crisis, because of which the demand of its car decreased in the domestic market. In order to recover from this loss, Chrysler had no other option but to find a partner with whom it could serve the foreign market. Chrysler surveyed the possibilities of various big automakers like Nissan, TATA Motors, Ford, Volkswagen, GM and Fiat. Finally they decided to create a strategic alliance with Fiat. In this alliance Fiat agreed for 20% of Chrysler stake and increased to 35% within five years. With this Alliance, Fiat got the opportunity to enter the US Market and instead of paying for the 35% of Chrysler stake, they provided Chrysler access to their technology in automobiles. (Calabrese, 2012) Fiat announced publicly their intention to open a production center in North America for manufacturing of Alfa Romeo and Fiat brands. By doing so they gained 35% stake in Chrysler and gained access to the Chrysler production center in America. Similarly, Chrysler also benefitted by gaining access to the European market and was able to learn and apply Fiat technology for engineering small cars. The joint venture between the companies would not have fulfilled the strategic alliance goals since there was a huge difference between them in terms of technology, working environment, working style, management style and employees of the firms would not have been comfortable working...

Comparing Two Similar Businesses: Amazon.Com & Borders Books

...Comparing Two Similar Businesses: Amazon.com & Borders Books Strayer University Bus 302 – Management Concepts October 31, 2011 Envisioned by its company founder and CEO Jeff Bezos since 1994 as "Earth's most customer-centric company" Amazon.com today, with more than 17 million customers and over a billion and a half dollars in annual sales, stands as the world’s largest E-commerce E-tailer. Named after the Amazon River, one of the largest and most exotic rivers in the world, Amazon.com started as an online bookstore but quickly diversified its selling efforts to DVDs, CDs, MP3 downloads, computer software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, and toys with the aim, as implied by its logo “A to Z with a smile,” to attain customer satisfaction and carry every product from A to Z. Although it was a slow starter, not showing a profit for the first five years, and enduring the dot-com burst, Amazon.com persevered and now profitable it is recognized as having popularized online shopping (Schneider, 2011). Without any experience in the business of selling books, Jeff Bezos realized that the books had a great potential shipping profile for online sales. Always believing in the economic network effects, he decided to setup his company in Seattle, WA, very close to the largest book distribution warehouse and talented computer programmers in the U.S. According to a quote that Bezos said in an article publicized in U.S. News, “While we're crossing...

Protecting Our America

...“Protecting Our America” After researching on America’s problems with border control and illegal immigration, I first have realized that two of the most important aspects of this highly controversial topic, relate to America’s economy and culture. Certain people, such as Anna Quidlen, author of essay “Immigration: Newcomers by Numbers”, believe that America relies on both legal and illegal immigrants to boost our economy and help our nation become more universal. My research presents the other side of this argument, by showing how illegal immigration has actually threatened our nation’s economy and culture more so than anything else. I originally agreed with Anna Quindlen, after reading her essay; all of her points describing the economic benefits America receives by employing undocumented workers seemed reasonable and accurate. Her plea states that they are just regular people in search of work, trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. I’m sure this is true in a lot of cases but unfortunately, there are more repercussions for allowing illegal immigrants to stay in our country than what meets the eye. Yes, it is true that these Mexican workers will take jobs that Americans turn down and yes, they will do them for cheaper. So in that sense, yes, illegal workers do benefit our economy, “but what is good for corporate America is not necessarily what is good for Middle America (Buchanan 49).” Simply paying taxes and filling lower income jobs such as farmhands...

An Essay on Intercultural Communication

...have to be aware of the basic norms which you take for granted in your own behavior. You express culture in symbolic forms, whether you have a cross around your neck or a headscarf on your head. It is the result of a learning process through life, and it forms your values, behavior, ideas, ways of communicating (verbal and non-verbal) and simply the rules you are living by – all your do’s and don’ts . Take a look at the article ‘’given all we know of whales, why resume the slaughter?’’ from The Guardian Online, April 6, 2010 by Paola Calalieri, it suggests that ‘’we now live in globalized times’’ but even though we have made it more easy to communicate (Internet etc.) & to travel across borders, the borders are still there, meaning the culture is still different within each border. Many international organizations have tried, and some succeeded, to introduce international laws, like the WTO (World Trade Organization), NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) and the Human Right Organization; also there is an International Whaling Commission which is trying to prevent different cetaceans from becoming extinct. If they succeeded, and the species are now again flourishing, why can the hunters not hunt them again like they used to? Human kind strives for knowledge, and now that we now that whales are intelligent and sensitive beings, we suddenly have a certain compassion for them, and that makes...

Difference Between China and Sub-Saharan in Economic Growth and Development

...Difference between China and Sub-Saharan in economic growth and development This essay will try to analyse the difference between China and Sub- Saharan region countries on the economic growth and development issue from an overall view. In order to contrast the different development and growth methods between china and a whole Sub-Saharan region of countries, the essay will introduce the solow model in order to simplify the analysis, because in order to conduct a precise research, too many factors need to be controlled, so introducing a model which can simplify but not change the fact is appropriate. The basic assumptions of the solow model remain unchanged in this essay because the first assumption of constant returns will stand as both China and Sub- Saharan countries are economy which are large enough “that the gains from the specialization have been exhausted” (D. Romer (2011), "Advanced Macroeconomics", McGraw–Hill, New York, 1996.). The second assumption which neglects other impacts on the economy development will be discussed in the later paragraphs like policy, population, human capital and so on. Figure 1.
