I am writing about facts about the American Staffordshire Terries also known as the American Pit Bull Terrier. I have two pit bull terriers myself, their names are Daisy Mae and Lilly. The life span of them averages from 8-15 years and the average height of them is about 19 inches. The adult male and female pits usually have a different weight than one another. The males are usually a little larger than what the females are. The males as adults average to the weight of 35 lbs to 65 lbs. The females average at the weight of 30 lbs to 60 lbs. There are many colors of the this breed, here are some of the colors that you can find them in: Brindle, Black, White, Fawn, Red, Blue, Tan, Brown and they also have them in a grey shade. The origins around the …show more content…
In the 20th century pits were most known for being great family dogs, mascots and they were also used for being military heroes. They were represented in the battle field and on posters for the military in World War I. They were also known for being the perfect spokesdog during World War I. Pits were also known for being extremely well with children and were also known as nursemaids or nanny dogs. They were believed to be descended from Olde English Bulldogs. In the 19th century pit bulls were also used for “bull baiting” as what they called it which is where they would force the dogs to fight for sport. This soon was considered inhumane and became illegal. Thankful for this. Another thing that pit bulls were breed to do in the 19th century was “bear baiting” which is a blood sport were they would put a bear in a ring with a pit so that the pit could torture the bear while others watched for “entertainment”. A myth about the pit bull terrier is that they have locking jaws, there is nothing that is abnormal or different about a pit bulls jaw than there is with any other breed of dog. A fun fact about pit bulls is that they were on the cover of Life Magazine three times which is more than any

Informative Essay On Pit Bull Terrier

...Pit bull terriers were bred in the late 1800s. When baiting large animals was banned, people began fighting their dogs against each other which lead to the creation of the pit bull terrier. Breeders would combined a bulkier and slower bull-dog which was bred to hunt mainly bears and bulls, with a quicker and more agile terrier, to create a dog more fit for fighting. Although the dogs were trained to fight, this did not necessarily mean they showed aggression towards humans or even other dogs (ASPCA, 2017). Just like with any other breed, proper training, commitment, and respect is what will shape a dog. They were being used as fighting dogs, but people were also managing the breed as a household companion at the same time. Granted this...

Persuasive Essay On American Pitbull Terrier

...As a reader of this essay, many people will read the title I have presented and come up with a general picture in their heads of what I will be talking about. Knowing the background of this essay, being an abstract concept to define, people may be confused as to what’s so abstract about a dog? Well here is why all of those thinkers are wrong. The word pit bull is thrown around so often, that it is not even questioned about what the word truly means. In fact, a pit bull is not a breed of dog, but it is a “...class of dogs that includes several breeds: American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier and any other purebred or mixed breed dog that is a combination of these dogs” (Pit Bull FAQ). There are many laws banning pit bulls; they are categorized by their physical traits and then based on that, get taken away from their families. Although there are many problems with this, one major problem is that non pitbulls get caught up by this checklist and get...

American Pitbull Terrier

...Compare and Contrast Essay Composition Thomas J Bowar 2/5/2013 Are American Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers the same dog? In 1898 United Kennel Club (UKC) was the first registry to recognize the American Pit Bull terrier, and C.Z. Bennet the founder of the UKC assigned the first registration to his own American Pit Bull Terrier, Bennet’s Ring according to (UKC, 2010). The UKC is one of the only dog clubs that recognizes the American Pit Bull terrier; however, the same cannot be said for the American Staffordshire terrier. The American Staffordshire terrier is recognized by all major dog clubs. According to the (UKC,2010), These dogs were never designed to be fought against each other. That is unfortunately something that happened because people were inhumane. The American Staffordshire terrier and American Pit Bull Terrier have a debatable rich history, the beauty of what the two breeds look like and the interesting health problems that these two dog breeds have. Interestingly enough without being educated most people mistake the two breeds for each other. These two breeds are very similar, but are not the same dog. The history of origin for both the American Staffordshire and American Pitbull Terrier has been and still is debated today by historians. American Staffordshire Terriers date back to 1870; however, the breed was known as English Staffordshire terrier since the breed had only spread across the English Isles. They were bred from a bulldog...

Breed Specific Legislation Isn’t Fair

...bans the breed from an area. BSL has banned the American Pit Bull Terrier from multiple states in America, and even some European countries. In this essay I will prove the unnecessity of BSL. This essay will go more in depth on what BSL is all about, it will educate the readers about the American Pit Bull Terrier breed and the pit bull family as a whole, and it will provide possible alternatives. Breed Specific Legislation made its first notable appearance in 1984. “In 1984, a New Mexico town completely banned pit bulls and allowed county officers to confiscate and euthanize the dogs” (animallaw, 2007). BSL was made to try to regulate specific breeds of dogs. Usually, BSL targets breeds that are thought of as dangerous breeds. Proponents of BSL claim that BSL is a great way to reduce the threatening pit bull breed (animallaw, 2007). People who support BSL usually have imagined pit bulls as vicious dogs bred just to fight. BSL is slowly being seen as ineffective laws because leaders of communities are being educated more about pit bulls. Pit bulls are not necessarily a breed of dog. Pit bulls are a category of dogs more than a breed. Pit bull usually groups 3 breeds of dog, “the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), American Staffordshire Terrier (AMSTAFF), and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (STAFFIE)” (.understand-a-bull., 2007). Pit bulls have been given a bad reputation because of all the media and press that pit bulls have been in. for example the Michael Vick dog fighting...

Pitbull Research Paper

...Nicole Van Miss Ward Period 5/6 March 8, 2024 Pitbull Essay Golden Retrievers and Beagles are known to have fantastic temperaments, and it may be surprising, but pit bulls do too. Pit bulls are athletic and strong dogs that come from Bulldogs and Terriers who were crossbred to make a working and fighting breed. The core of the breed is made up of three dogs, the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and Staffordshire, while the term “Pit Bull” is used to refer to them. Pit bulls are misconceived to be vicious and dangerous for a variety of reasons. Considering their bad reputation, they should be legally allowed as pets for the reason that they are trainable, great companions, and their invalid history is the reason for the continuous comments...

Essay Four

...ESSAY FOUR When someone asks for a list of the most dangerous dog breeds the first breeds that might come to mind would be the pit-bull, maybe the Rottweiler or Doberman. Those would be incorrect however. Believe it or not, there are more bites by lap dogs like the Shitsu, Yorkie than there are by some incorrectly labeled "aggressive" breeds. In studies the giant schnauzer took first place with the most incidents of bites followed closely by the Akita and Chow. As a general whole however we must remember that it is socialization, breeding and training that sculpt of a dog and its likelihood of incident rather than breed alone. I am dye hard animal lover especially for Pit-bulls and Bullmastiff breed. I cry when I see ASPCA television commercials. Having a three year old little girl and having a love for such big breed like the Mastiff and misunderstood pit-bull choosing the right breed to be around your children is very important. The question really is “What is the best dog for kids?” This is a common question, but there is no solid answer. In theory, almost any dog has the potential to get along great with children. One can speculate about which breeds “might” be best for kids, but you just never know how each individual dog will turn out. There are many factors that affect a dog’s ability to get along well with kids. Here are several things that you will need to keep in mind before you get a family dog. Obedience training is absolutely essential! Make sure someone in...

Cruel Games

...Research Essay English Comp Cruel Games Dogs are human’s best friends. While some people choose to treat dogs with kindness and respect, others are mistreating dogs by using them for their entertainment. Dog fighting is still occurring today. It is big business in many parts of the county. This often happens in areas where there is poverty. Dog fighting is seen as “the quick” money. Some highly organized groups even use a secret dialect called the “Cajon Dictionary” on social network sites to plan fighting events discretely. This cruelty is also most often linked between more crimes including; illegal firearms possession, drug trafficking, gambling, spousal and child abuse, rape, and homicide. Regardless of if you can make money from it or not, dog fighting is a very cruel activity that should never occur anywhere in the world. A dog cannot speak for itself and say, “Stop!” That’s why more people need to be aware of this epidemic and see what is being done to help end it. Ancient Romans pitted dogs against each other in gladiatorial contests, but dogs have also played practical roles in society. Dogs have long been used as hunting companions, defenders of property and protectors of livestock against poachers and wild animals. They play key roles in military and K-9 police units. French bulldogs and Old Boston Bulldogs killed household vermin and therefore made valuable pets. “In England, bulldogs that were crossbred with terriers were forced to attack bulls or a bear...

Politician parties compete for support from British voters by campaigning on their view for the country and how they would make things better for the UK and change things. The political party which wins the election then forms the government, and bases its legislative agenda on its election manifesto. But, where no single political party decisively wins the election - as happened in 2010 - two or more parties may form an alliance government. They might have to negotiate a joint vision and agree on which new laws to champion in the future of the parliament. Once in government, other events and effects also compete for ministers' attention...

...this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are...

Wuthering Heights Chapter I 1801. - I have just returned from a visit to my landlord - the solitary neighbour that I shall be troubled with. This is certainly a beautiful country! In all England, I do not believe that I could have fixed on a situation so completely removed from the stir of society. A perfect misanthropist’s heaven: and Mr. Heathcliff and I are such a suitable pair to divide the desolation between us. A capital fellow! He little imagined how my heart warmed towards him when I beheld his black eyes withdraw so suspiciously under their brows, as I rode up, and when his fingers sheltered themselves, with a jealous resolution, still further in his waistcoat, as I announced my name. ’Mr. Heathcliff?’ I said. A nod was the answer. ’Mr. Lockwood, your new tenant, sir. I do myself the honour of calling as soon as possible after my arrival, to express the hope that I have not inconvenienced you by my perseverance in soliciting the occupation of Thrushcross Grange: I heard yesterday you had had some thoughts - ‘ 2 of 540 Wuthering Heights ’Thrushcross Grange is my own, sir,’ he interrupted, wincing. ‘I should not allow any one to inconvenience me, if I could hinder it - walk in!’ The ‘walk in’ was uttered with closed teeth, and expressed the sentiment, ‘Go to the Deuce:’ even the gate over which he...
