...my future business endeavour. I have found that after so long out of the education system it has been a difficult transition juggling study and work. The first units that were chosen for me in study period 2, I thought were difficult to understand having never written an essay before and without the knowledge or know how, I was not able to complete these units. SSK12 has given me a good understanding of what it takes at becoming a university student and in particular the skills on writing essays. As I have mentioned previously up until study period 2, I had never written an essay and did not fully comprehend how important the set out of a university essay was. Choosing an Essay Question was an important part of my learning in week 6 because this has now given me the beginning step in writing a university essay using the correct format. I am feeling a lot more confident when approaching the subject of essays as I now understand and have the knowledge on the procedure in completing an academic essay and what is required. I now know that by firstly choosing a question will then help you to with your thesis and this in turn will give you your main idea and sets the way in which to write your essay. During the time that I was employed by the government it was necessary for me to constantly refer to certain policies and procedures on a daily basis. I was able to use the marking text system to allow me easy reference by indicated the pages with tabs and then within the...

...Assessment Essay p. 5-10 College Learning Essay p. 11-17 Analyzing Arguments Essay p. 18-23 Cover Letter This midterm portfolio shows how I have progressed has a college reader and writer. Before this class I had trouble even understanding how to write a thesis and now I think I can definitely write a college level thesis. I have progressed to know how to incorporate my evidence into my concise and focused thesis statement. For example in the self assessment essay my thesis was, “Due to transferring to many schools over my first two years of college, I feel like I have had the opportunity to build up many habits of mind from Framework for Success in Post-Secondary Writing, especially in flexibility, openness and persistence but still can develop in metacognition and creativity in order to become a more successful college writer.” This showed that I could adapt a thesis to the assignment and it was focused and used my sources. At this point in the semester, a strength I have is the ability to connect source evidence with my thesis. I am able to develop my focused thesis around source-based evidence. For example in the college learning essay I was able to use my interview with my friend who was an elementary teacher to help develop my thesis about how teaching has changed due to technology. I also think another strength I have is organizing my paper in a proper order. In the three essays in this portfolio I organized the essays with...

...think about where reading or writing or a situation involving the two have changed my life. However, one time that sticks out to me vividly is when my teacher analyzed my essay in front of the class. I always thought I was a great writer , but when I got papers back with the grades I didn’t want, I was confused. It felt like all my hard work was never good enough. At first I thought that getting your essay read and critiqued by everyone in the class was pointless and insignificant. After we had finished I realized that some benefits had came out of the class critique session. Back when I was in IB English class the teacher used to give us grammar warm ups everyday. One day she decided to change our...

...or marriage. However, there is another type of foundation, which can serve as a ground for advanced education, and this is the foundation of reading and writing. Everyone knows the importance of reading and writing for a college education. Since a student has to do a lot of reading in all the courses, he needs strong vocabulary and reading skills. In addition, great writing skills are primordial to succeed in college and everyday life. Literacy

...Running head: LITERACY ESSAY Literacy Essay Literacy Essay The developments of early literacy skills in young children are crucial for future academic success. When children enter kindergarten, there is a wide range of differences in skill levels. While some children have developed social and language skills, other children may not due to inadequate situations. According to recent research, young children are enthusiastic about learning and emphasis should be placed on skills that foster early literacy and language development (LaRocque & Darling ,2008). Research suggests best practice when teaching young children literacy skills is to connect previous or background knowledge in order to reach the developmental domains of language, concepts, social, emotional and motor skills. In addition, kindergarten children should be introduced to emergent literacy skills that include phonological awareness, print awareness and vocabulary (LaRocque & Darling, 2008). This can be achieved through various environmental characteristics such as print rich classrooms, literacy rich centers and circle times. These characteristics foster literacy as well as language rich experiences for all children as well as those who come from disadvantage backgrounds. In order for meaningful literacy learning to take place, children must link the newly learned knowledge to their own cultural or family experiences (LaRocque & Darling, 2008). This essay will identify three developmentally appropriate...

Summer Reading Papers

...Our summer reading essay is supposed to show who we are as a writer and a reader, and where we need to begin our odyssey as a writer and reader. Of course, mine does not exactly do that. The summer reading essay does not represent who I am as a writer and I am mortified to have written such a catastrophe. But, one thing it does show is that I cannot rush or procrastinate because when under a time crunch my work seems to implode. I admit even when given plenty of time, my writing pieces are not perfect. My conclusions tend to be weak, I struggle at times connecting the thesis with the body paragraphs, and my vocabulary can be weak to say the least. When it comes to reading skills if something is not explicit I am most likely not able to comprehend...

Aed/202 Reading and Writing Stragies

...AED/202 Reading and Writing Development Sandy Mackey June 28, 2013 Kristen Weiss Reading and Writing Development As a future educator I believe that reading and writing is the utmost import thing in a child’s education. Without these two skills a child will not be able to succeed in school. For my essay, I chose two age groups that I want to teach; middle childhood, ages six through ten, and early adolescence, ages ten through 14. The reason I chose these two developmental ages is because I believe that children enjoy learning; they are like sponges, always trying to absorb as much as possible. The reading development in middle childhood children and early adolescent childhood children seem somewhat different. Middle childhood children start by identifying letters and matching letters with individual sounds, knowing what a word is, and interpreting spaces and punctuation are the earliest building blocks for reading skills (www.education.com). Early adolescent childhood children, usually do not have an issue with reading; they can identify vocabulary words in a book and sound out the words. Children of this stage usually enjoy reading. Writing skills for both middle and early adolescent children develop in the same way as their reading skills. Middle childhood children are more focused on what they are writing, their spelling, spacing, punctuation, and coherence has improved (www.education.com). As for the early adolescent children...

Rhetorical Analysis Of Amy Chua Is A Wimp By David Brooks

...Brooks begins his essay with criticizing Amy Chua’s parenting with showing how hard she is on her daughters. He’s reasonable throughout but still questions Chua and calls her “soft”. In “Amy Chua is a Wimp,” David Brooks argues that Amy Chua is too soft when it comes to parenting, leading her to ignore the importance in her children acquiring social skills, and that those skills are just as important as academic skills. Brooks begins with highlighting some cringe-worthy situations from Chua’s book. Amy Chua, a well-known “Tiger Mom,” believes western parents...

Reflection Esdsy

...Victoria Barkon December 15, 2014 ENG 890 Reflection Essay- final draft Reflection essay Writing has not always been my strongest subject in school; in fact it has always been my weakest just because I had always struggled with grammar, spelling, sentence structure, etc. I have always end up with bad grades in whatever writing classes I took. But as the semester is coming to an end I can honestly say I have learned and improved on a lot as both a writer and a student. One skill I believe I have improved on is the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading. Another skill I have improved on is sentence punctuation strategies: run-ons, comma splices, fragments and comma usage issues. Reading and study of professional essay was one of the skills I learned during the semester. Lastly I had learned how to demonstrate my abilities as a developing writer by: attending class regularly, prepared and on time, and participating actively. The first skill I learned and improved on a lot this semester was the writing process and what it came with such as prewriting, drafting, revising editing, and proofreading. I especially improved on this skill when I wrote my narrative essay. For example I had to write three drafts, first, second and then the finally draft. The first draft was me prewriting and getting all my ideals down. For my second draft I had to go for peer review and...
