Study Away Programs

...various debates on the value of studying abroad for the past few years. This debate was initiated after the New York Times started asking questions on whether this study away program is a waste of time. Those supporting these programs claimed that these studies were important since it prepares the students for life in an increasingly interconnected world. The people against it see it as a waste of time and money. Statistics shows that 273,996 of the United States students studied abroad for academic credit in the years 2010-2011. This number formed one percent of the total students enrolled in post-secondary education. Misinformation has been found to be a major reason for the small percentage of youngsters considering studying abroad. Most believe that studying abroad is luxurious and that there is nothing to benefit from it. This essay is meant to discuss whether study programs are just a waste of time (Collingwood, 2008). Some students believe that study away programs do not add value to one's life. The reality to this doubts and beliefs is different. The fact that the mode of teaching varies in different parts of the world and one may not be used to them does not make studying less valuable. In addition to the formal form of learning in classrooms, learning also takes place outside the classroom. Nothing

...International Seminar Professor Warren Matthias Haufe 09/20/2003 An Essay of self-introduction. Coming to a new place and meeting a lot of new people naturally includes introducing oneself for quite a number of times. But as Fyodor Dostoyevsky lets his narrator in the Letters from the Underworld say: “By the way, what is it that all respectable men talk about most readily? Answer – about themselves. So I too will talk about myself.”1 So I will join in and as I have done for a hundred times this past week I will happily introduce myself another time, this time in writing and in essay style. My name is Matthias Haufe and I am from Erlangen, a beautiful town in the northern part of Bavaria, Germany. The surrounding region is known as Frankonia, which I mention, because quite a few people there pride themselves as being Frankonians rather than Bavarians. There I spent the past thirteen years of my life, going to school, doing my civil service and later attending university. Before that I had lived in a small German village for six years and in Tokyo, Japan for four years. So if one takes all the aforementioned numbers they amount to 23, which is also my age. Having mentioned university, the question immediately arising is of course that of what I study. I major in English and Religion and minor in History and before I came here I had just finished the fifth semester of my studies. The goal of my studies is to become a teacher in a German “Gymnasium“, which roughly corresponds...

College Uneducation

...in life and we turn to education as the key to achieving our goals. But do we really think that we are taught the lessons that we need to learn? The answer is, no. Today, we believe that we are being ‘uneducated’ by the college institutions that we have entrusted with our education. By being ‘uneducated’, we mean the intangibles that we need to learn as human beings and as well-rounded individuals are being neglected. Yes, we are given facts and information to digest, but the handful of methods on how we learn deteriorates our way of thinking as an individual. Indeed it is ironic, but the painful truth is that this type of education contradicts our Filipino way of life, which is being naturally expressive, creative and open-minded. In Jorge Bocobo”s essay, he explicitly states three ways in which many students are getting a college Uneducation: book-worship, professional philistinism or overspecialization, and misguided zeal or simply a loss of a sound philosophy in life. The term itself is recursive with its word “U education” as a way of expressing the real truth about the current situation that is happening now on our College students and Graduates. He pointed out the essays to college students, and college graduates, where he observed them, on both college students and college graduates, produced by the Philippines. He entitled the essay “College Uneducation” as a wake-up call on the Philippines, as he pointed out some grounds the majority of college students has. It's the...

The Advantages of Studying Abroad Far Outweigh the Disadvantages

...The advantages of studying abroad far outweigh the disadvantages. Discuss In today’s world, a considerable number of students are not limited to study in their local countries. Instead, they choose to study abroad. This phenomenon becomes a trend especially in recent years. A variety of different attitudes have been come up with on both sides of the question. It is in this background that this essay begins by outlining the arguments for students choose to study abroad and point to the problems with these views. Afterwards, it will conclude with a summary of the main ideas canvassed. An important reason for students choose to study abroad is to improve their language skills. It is generally known that English is the official language in a large number of countries, in other words, English is a world language. If people want to enter a global workforce, speaking English fluently is very important for themselves. Studying abroad gives them a chance to practice their language skills. According to Lafford (2006), Study abroad has traditionally been assumed to be the best environments in which to acquire a second language. He argued that study abroad could help students to improve their target languages’ pronunciation, grammar and vocabularies through their usual life. Coincidentally, Freed (1995) pointed out that the students who study abroad could improve their speaking skills and make their second language become more fluent. However, as Anastasia (2014) has indicated, the second...

Essay on English

...Argumentative Essay: Why is it so Important to Know More than One Language We live in a multilingual world that is becoming increasingly globalized and it is therefore very important to know more than one language. There are three main reasons for this: an additional language can help you progress in your career, you gain an awareness of other cultures, and it helps increase our understanding and knowledge of our own language. More and more job advertisements are now specifying that they want second, third, and even fourth languages in some cases, and knowing more than one language opens up your prospects in a highly important way. Furthermore, as more and more companies begin to trade internationally, people are frequently beginning jobs for which they need no language skills, but then being asked to relocate abroad, or offered a promotion that requires language skills. Therefore, it helps with career enhancement. Some people refute this claim by saying that there are plenty of other jobs available, but this is simply not the case anymore with the global recession and more countries being international. The second reason that it is important to know more than one language is that it increases cultural awareness and allows you to communicate with different people. All good methods of learning languages also entail learning about another culture, especially when your language skills get to a higher level. This awareness allows people from different nationalities and religions...
