In the poem “Being sixteen” the author has shown us a few different aspects and ideas of being sixteen which are pointless education, having dreams and being yourself around your friends. From 16 year old students’ perspectives, he described the hardness of being sixteen well as he used variety of techniques and different attitudes of language. He delivered the readers the ideas and the hardness of being sixteen quite simply although there are some meaningful messages that the readers can find if they can get deeply into the text and understand the deep true meanings of the ideas that the author tried to give us.
The author introduced his idea of pointless education at the start of the poem. He described the idea from a 16 year old student’s perspectives on education with sarcastic attitudes. This quote, ‘Searching for words with crystal clear meaning’ shows us the sarcastic tone of this idea. It also suits with the theme of the poem by connecting with 16 year olds by emphasising that education is not always the most important aspect of life to care about, but there are other important aspects of life that can lead you into better future life. Another technique that the author uses to build up his idea of pointless education is allusion. The author put an allusion of Shakespeare which creates a communication between the author and the readers who have most likely to have read or experienced at least one of Shakespeare’s works from school or social life. In the quote ‘Reading Shakespeare, searching for meaning and playing different roles for everyone you’ve met’, we can see that the author tried to connect his next idea with the allusion that he made, on Shakespeare.

...I try to draw an analogy with the process of reading application essays. The bad. Ninety percent of the applications I read contain what I call McEssays - usually five-paragraph essays that consist primarily of abstractions and unsupported generalization. They are technically correct in that they are organized and have the correct sentence structure and spelling, but they are boring. Sort of like a Big Mac. I have nothing against Big Macs, but the one I eat in Charlottesville is not going to be fundamentally different from the one I eat in Paris, Peoria or Palm Springs. I am not going to rave about the quality of a particular Big Mac. The same can be said about the generic essay. If an essay starts out: "I have been a member of the band and it has taught me leadership, perseverance and hard work," I can almost recite the rest of the essay without reading it. Each of the three middle paragraphs gives a bit of support to an abstraction, and the final paragraph restates what has already been said. A McEssay is not wrong, but it is not going to be a positive factor in the admission decision. It will not allow a student to stand out. A student who uses vague abstractions poured into a preset form will end up being interpreted as a vague series of abstractions. A student who uses cliché becomes, in effect, a cliché.
