1. Sources of error? What challenges did you face? Did the esters smell as you expected?

An incomplete reaction may be an error for the experiment because we did not time how long the test tube was placed into the beaker and removed it from the heat to identify the smell based on estimation. This can cause an error on the smell. The length of time in heat will also affect the completeness of the reaction. The challenges I faced working with this experiment was that I did not know how long to keep the mixture in the water bath and not knowing when the reaction was completed. Only one ester , Pentyl Ethanoate, was successfully predicted.

2. Why would putting the ester reaction mixture in water help us smell the ester?

Putting the ester reaction mixture in water would help us smell the ester better because, first, the test tube has small a really small opening, making it difficult to smell the ester compare to a beaker. Second, esters are fairly insoluble in water; they form a layer on top of the water. Therefore, putting the ester reaction mixture would help us smell the ester.

Why did we use a hot plate rather than a Bunsen burner?

In this experiment, a hot plate was used rather than a Bunsen burner because the temperature needs to be monitored and it is difficult to control the temperature of the water by using a Bunsen burner. A hot plate allows us to change the level of heat that is going to the beaker and makes it easier to control the temperature for the esterification reaction to proceed.
