The facility I’ve mostly discussed is mainly from my personal experiences working in Military Treatment Facilities or MTFs. The glass ceiling issue is an interesting one and perhaps a tricky one in describing its existence. I’ve worked in Army hospitals for 19 years and have had many women managers at the mid level and a couple at the highest level within the facility. It’s very difficult to say that there is a glass ceiling when these positions, which are few army wide, have often been field by women. After all the military is supposed to a merit based organization that prides itself on fairness and equality. Without knowing many of the inner workings at the highest of levels, it’s very difficult to dispute the notion that is no glass ceiling for women within the military and my facility. I can say that, in all my years in the medical field, the number of female RNs in the hospitals have greatly outnumbered the number of male RNs, but for some strange reason, I don’t recall ever seeing more than 2 females within the Hospital Command Administration. Those positions have always seemed to be male dominated, but again, I’m reluctant to throw it under the glass ceiling bus without any evidence to support. It is however, an interesting thought and something I never gave much thought of until now. There really isn’t to much of a need to reference the militarys past and how women had to work to gain respect and fair credit. It’s well documented. So in my career, I feel women have had an equal shake from where I’ve been able to see things. It’s not where it should be maybe so there is definitely room to

...Introduction The purpose of this assignment is to identify a utilitarian, ethical perspective of a company that supplies transistors to a pace maker company. This will be done by first describing Utilitarian ethics. Followed by identifying the key utilitarian ethical problems confronting the transistor company. Then covering the advice that Jeremy Bentham might have given in this situation. After this the Utility Test will be applied to the situation, followed by the Common Good Test. Upon completion of both test the results will be compared to decide which of the two test is the most informative and why. Transistor Company Back Ground The case that was presented for review was one of ethical decisions. A company that produced transistors (referred to from this point on as “Trans Inc”) was presented a decision to either stop selling to a particular company in order to avoid legal issues, or continue selling to that company in order to save lives. The company that Trans Inc was selling transistors to made pacemakers. For the use of this assignment the pacemaker company will be referred to as “Medical Inc.” At the time, the 1970’s, pacemaker technology was in its infancy (Shanks, 2012). There were many problems with the technology and if the pacemaker failed then the user would die. In one reported incident a patient yawned and this caused the pacemaker to stop causing the patient to die. After several incidents that caused patients to die, Trans Inc. starting...

Eth501: Business Ethics Case 2

...Running Head: Making ethical and moral decision using the Utilitarian Principal TUI UNIVERSITY XXXXXXXXXXXX Module 2 Case ETH501: Business Ethics Dr. Stevens June 10, 2013 “A pacemaker is a small modern day device, about the size of a half dollar piece, that's placed under the skin near your heart to help control your heartbeat. People may need a pacemaker for a variety of reasons, mostly due to one of a group of conditions called arrhythmias, in which the heart's rhythm is abnormal”(MayoClinic.com, 2012). This device uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a standard rate. In the heart's electrical system, impulses generated by the natural pacemaker are conducted to the atria and ventricles. Heart surgery or certain diseases can interrupt transmission (heart block), requiring use of a temporary or permanent artificial pacemaker. A tiny electrode attached to an electric generator outside the body is threaded through a vein into the heart. The generator, inserted beneath the skin, produces regular pulses of electric charge to maintain the heartbeat. Pacemakers can also be implanted on the heart's surface. The Sole Remaining Supplier, which we will refer to as Company X has an ethical dilemma of weather to continue to sell the tiny transistors to a company that makes pacemakers that are not 100% for use of patients in dismal need. To make an ethical and business resolution of what to do as a board of director, the sole remaining...

...The United States military is still in transition of how it handles its female Soldiers in regards to pregnancy. Is it far to place restrictions on this private matter? Can the rules and regulations imposed be seen as sexist and gender specific? I will attempt to discuss these utilitarian and deontological considerations. From a utilitarian aspect it is deemed necessary to control female pregnancies especially with upcoming deployments. The military is facing a shortage of Soldiers across the board. A rising trend is developing of Female Soldiers purposely getting pregnant before deployment in order to avoid going overseas. Another issue is female Soldiers becoming pregnant while in Iraq or Afghanistan. It is important to maintain morale and keep Soldiers in the mind frame that deployment is necessary and part of our duty as Soldiers. Depending on the job, most military professions have a higher percentage of males than females. From a utilitarian view, I believe it is necessary to mediate female Soldiers pregnancies while our Nation is at war. The greater good would be for females not to become pregnant a couple of months before deployment purposely. More importantly, female Soldiers should not get pregnant while deployed. Female Soldiers often hold critical positions that the military depends on for successful operations in executing missions. When a female gets pregnant after attending certain qualifications and other training puts that unit in a terrible disposition...

...TUI UNIVERSITY Michael Jackson SLP: Moral problems in the U.S. Army ETH501: Business Ethics Dr. Kimberley Loar 8 July 2009 Introduction The Company that I have chosen is the one that I have been employed in since November 1985. That Company is the United States Army. The Army has changed a lot since my 24 years. The biggest change I see these days is the quality of soldier that we are allowing to join the Army. When I took the test to come in the Army the Recruiter did not have the quotas that they have these days. The U.S. Army recruited more than 2,600 soldiers under new lower aptitude standards this year, helping the service beat its goal of 80,000 recruits. The Army recruited 80,635 soldiers, roughly 7,000 more than last year. Of those, about 70,000 were first-time recruits who had never served before. The moral problem is allowing soldiers to enlist, that under any other situation besides the war on terror would not be allowed to join the Army. Utilitarian considerations The recruiters have a job and obligation to put bodies in the Army and that they are doing. The Moral worth is meeting and exceeding the Army goal of 80,000 recruits. Deontological Ethics The Army has decided to give out Moral waivers that allow new recruits to enter the U.S. Army by lowering the standards that were set in place to recruit quality Soldiers. Recruiters are all about quantity over quality recruits because of the need for more soldiers due to the...

This literature review examines. The paper compares the Should Bank of America refuse to process payments and do business with WikiLeaks? WikiLeaks is an organization dedicated to bringing forward the truth about what governments and corporations are doing. This is what journalistic organizations are supposed to do. Governments and corporations can be very powerful and it is dangerous for the public to be uninformed about their actions. As WikiLeaks has become more effective in their mission to inform the public, governments and corporations have become more determined to silence WikiLeaks. ...Trident University International Kenya Bartley Module 1 SLP ETH501: Business Ethics Dr. Bonnie Adams January 23, 2015 Deontological Ethics is defined as a person must act a certain way for no other reason than because it is the right way to act. In which a way, that a person should act a certain way because it is my duty to do so. Acting on morals, they are either right or wrong on principal and we have a duty to do well no matter the circumstance. The philosopher Immanuel Kant laid the ground rules as to how a person should act called Categorical Imperative. Categorical Imperative is defined as acting only on that maxim through which you can at the same time, that it should become a universal law (Pecorino, P.A., 2000). What Kant is saying is that everybody should act the same way because it is the duty to do so. It should fit the criterial with the rest of the duties of that law. In this paper I will discuss a business ethics problem in which I have had personal experience with and analyze it using deontological ethics. Secondly, I will describe the deontological implications of the ethical problem. Lastly, I will describe how Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative applies to the business ethical problem I have experienced. After working 14 out my 30 years of life, I have experienced more than a handful of unethical problems in the workforce. One that stands out to me the most is stealing from the workplace. Although I have not personally experience this, I have...

...TUI UNIVERSITY Module 1 SLP: Ethical dilemma in the Military ETH501: Business Ethics Professor Dr. Michael Garmon January 13, 2012 Describe an ethical problem you have confronted in a business situation. It has been nineteen years since I initially raised my hand and took an oath to serve in the military. Since my initial enlistment there have been many changes within the organization and ethical standards of the Army. The ethical problem that I have confronted in the Military today has been to choose between the commitment that I made to the military, and my commitment to my family. Having to naturally make the decision that is expected of me has been a difficult task. Military Ethics provides the necessary foundation on which to explore the more intricate ethical issues facing those in uniform. However, how does one prioritize between family, and their duty to serve? The most recent missions of the Military are the War in Iraq and Afghanistan. The United States has only formally declared war against foreign nations five separate times; however this is the most documented time that dual military families served over seas at the same time. The U.S. Army recruited more than 2,600 soldiers this year, helping the military accomplish its goal of 80,000 recruits. The Army recruited 80,635 soldiers, roughly 7,000 more than last year. Of those recruited many of them were first-time enlistments who had never served before. But many of them were dual...

Compassion for Immeasurable Sacrifices

...Compassion for Immeasurable Sacrifices Module 4 Case Study ETH501: Business Ethics Compassion for Immeasurable Sacrifices Introduction The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act Of 2008 (ADA), section 902.1, (b) defines disability as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of such individual. The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs definition of a disabled veteran classifies an individual with a disability rate of 30 percent or more, or a person whose discharge or release from active duty was for a disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty. The coupling of the ADA with the U.S. Veteran’s definition makes for a very dire societal footing for the countries returning marred daughters and sons. The question is does the same government, for whom they made personal sacrifices, owe a qualified candidate from a Service Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) any preferential treatment such as a government contract on a sole source bid. This paper will examine the utilitarian and deontological considerations of the government when employing sole source bid method to SDVOSBs and Affirmative Action’s set aside program. Background In order to honor American citizens who have made significant sacrifices while performing their duty by serving in a U.S. military branch, the U.S. Federal government has made provisions for SDVOSB for the purpose of aiding the wounded and disabled veterans of...

Business Ethics

...Module 1 – Case Study ETH501 – Business Ethics Introduction Making moral decisions in today’s workplace is sometimes a very difficult task. In the business world of today, society expects that large corporations will make moral decisions that will positively affect its business and its patrons. Recently, Wikileaks (not affiliated with Wikipedia) has been in the national and world spotlight as a corporate bad guy because it made the decision to release what is considered vital information on several large businesses that could adversely affect those said businesses. Reportedly, the information on Wikileaks is not just assumed authentic but is actually authentic and has been vetted so that the innocent are protected. With this being said, Wikileaks reportedly has in its possession a hard drive possibly belonging to an executive with Bank of America and plans to release the information contained on the hard drive to “take down” the bank and expose an “ecosystem of corruption” (Schwartz, 2011). In today’s world, freedom of press and freedom of speech is something that is held in the highest regard and is supported fully. The question is when does this freedom go too far and cross the line of moral acceptance. In addition, does the information in question violate the privacy of those involved and is it something that is just being used to draw attention to a particular person or organization. It is possible that by releasing confidential information about a large corporation...

This analysis will be accomplished by providing a brief time lime of the Adelphia, identifying and discussing two key ethical problems raised and describing what is meant by deontological ethics. More specifically this paper will show how Kant’s Categorical Imperative (CI) applies to this scenario. The latter discussion will apply the deontological framework of business ethics to the two key ethical problems by constructing CI to the Adelphia scenario. The supporting material for this discussion can be found at Harvard University’s 2011 lecture: Justice, What’s the right thing to do? as presented by Professor Michael Sandel8. To examine the elements of the case, we will inspect the unethical behavior of five key figures culpable in the “rise and fall of the small town saga of epic dimensions8”. John J.
