Ethics A business that expects to turn a profit and have sustainability in the market must operate ethically. A company that trades publically has the responsibility of handling the profits of the company for the clients, stakeholders, and employees. The company also has the responsibility of earning money for the clients, stakeholders, and employees. Ethics is the social aspect of business, when a business does not act ethically responsible there are ramifications socially for the company also.
A company forms its foundation from the idea of a person and transforms it into a business, and when that idea blossoms the business grows. A business eventually reaches the stage of needing to solicit stakeholders and the company needs to put a strategic plan in place. The company must develop a model the business will operate under. An integral part of running a successful business is implementing a plan that incorporates the company’s vision, code of conduct, and mission as well as a code of ethics. The code of ethics and conduct is the expectation the company has for its employees and the consequences for violating them (McNamara, n.d.).
The code of ethics a company implements is a guideline of the expectations for employees and the values the company holds is extremely important. When an employee questions what is right or wrong within the company, the code of ethics and values are a useful guide to answer the employees’ questions. The code of ethics and values also can be used as a tool for orientation of new employees to advise of the consequences of violating those codes. It is easy to see, how in today’s failing economy how a company can fall into unethical behavior. When a company chooses to act unethically this not only affects the company, its employees, and its stakeholders, but the ripple effects trickledown to the general business world and in general

...“Can we build a car for $2000?” asked Tata’s Indian management and the reply came back “yes”. Now we know the right answer was “no”. The response also revealed the vehicle’s executives as devoid of ethical leadership. code of ethicsThe Tata Nano is a disgrace and does a huge disservice to the larger, global organisation. From the start, the group’s ethical code says: No Tata company shall undertake any project or activity to the detriment of the wider interests of the communities in which it operates. The safety code is even more explicit: A Tata company, in the process of production and sale of its products and services, shall strive for economic, social and environmental sustainability.” The apparent vulnerability of users to this vehicle makes the car socially and environmentally unsustainable. As for quality the organisation claims a commitment to: “Supply goods and services of world-class quality standards” That the Nano even got past the mock up stage, with no airbag—at least on some models, and whose fragile structure “folded like a cardboard after hitting a wall at 40 mph” is reprehensible. The Nano appears to trash Tata’s ethics code. Where were the compliance officers when the vehicle was on the drawing board? There is a dreadful echo of the classic Pinto scandal of the last century. Ford’s then management was aware of the weakness of the fuel tank. A crash from the rear could cause the tank to explode and...

Ethc Week2

...Week 2 Ethical Dilemma Group A: An airline pilot goes for his regular medical checkup. The doctor discovers that he has developed a heart murmur. The pilot only has a month to go before he is eligible for retirement. The doctor knows this and wonders whether, under these unusual circumstances, she is justified in withholding the information about the pilot's condition. I think in this situation, with it being medical issues, the doctor should do their job and help the person with what they can do to control the heart murmur with medicine and whatever else there is to do. Is the doctor in the wrong for not following her procedure when it comes to issues such as these? As a nursing student, if I was in this position as a doctor and something happened to the patient before his retirement, I would have a reminder every day that I could’ve done something to prevent the patient from being more ill or death. I think she would be in the wrong because if something happened to him, she could be liable for not following through what she is supposed to do as a doctor. She shouldn’t think of his retirement, she should think of how to fix this heart murmur. While it may be unfortunate for him, he should also think of his health too. He is in the hands of a professional and if she does not do her job then he could be in big trouble. Now another issue I think that can play into this is her beliefs and morals. What if she believes the heat murmur is not that serious? Then what happens if she...

...Kelvin Perez Principles of Ethics Professor: Teresa Knox DeVry University The Mayor of a large city was given a free membership in an exclusive golf club by people who have received several city contracts. He also accepted gifts from organizations that have not done business with the City but might in the future. The gifts ranged from $200 tickets to professional sports events to designer watches and jewelry. I understand that the Mayor of the city is the big boss. He controls what comes in and goes out of the city. Why must the Mayor receive gifts for the duty that he was employed for? If anything the taxpayers who pays these contractors should be the one receiving gifts. I don’t think this is acceptable, the Mayor ensures the city runs smooth. I haven’t yet seen a parent get a gift from the teacher or principle or any type of schooling system for teaching their child to be a good kid. I know for a fact that Locke would have addressed this situation the same I would of. He would of demand to get those gifts and give it to the less fortune in the city to the one who does need the extra help. And doing so this action can help the city come together. By this Locke would have started war with the city for no respect. Locke believe in our natural rights meaning that he believe in commonwealth and by that it was to enjoy our personal rights, and honored the right of each other living together as commonwealth. Plagiarism Ethics Issue Ethc 445

...Plagiarism is a very serious problem among students nowadays. Thanks to the Internet, tons of research papers are just a click away. Researching a topic became much easier when search engines like Google became available. Now, instead of going to the library and spending hours on finding the right article or a book, we can have it all in just a few minutes. Unfortunately, not all students know how to use the resources wisely. Plagiarism can be compared to stealing, even though not everyone sees it that way. We may not be stealing someone’s money or car but their intellectual property. As defined in the textbook, “Plagiarism is passing off other people's ideas or words as one's own. “ (Ruggiero, p.18) I think that some students especially do not realize how serious of an offense plagiarism is. “In the academic world, plagiarism is considered an ethical violation and is punished by a failing grade for a paper or a course or even by dismissal from the institution.” Outside the school, there can be serious consequences as well. The original author, the person from whom we “stole” the ideas and/or words can press charges against us. (Ruggiero, p.18) I also believe that some cases of student plagiarism are due to misunderstanding. Perhaps the student paraphrased a fragment of a scholar article and did not put the source because they thought that since it is in their own words they do not need to cite the source. Maybe the student was not familiar with the APA citation method and...

Devry Ethcs 445 Week3 Assignment

...The Mayor The Mayor’s type of story has been told again and again; not only in America, but throughout history as well. A person obtains a position of power and then ends up abusing that power to receive more benefits for himself/herself. It is understandable for a politician to network with businesses and other organizations; however, accepting all of these gifts takes it a bit too far. I don’t see how accepting all these lavish gifts are for the greater good. If the Mayor wanted to make accepting these gifts ethical, then he would donate those gifts to charity or at least respectively decline. I believe that Locke wouldn’t have approached the problem the same way I have. From the readings and the lecture, it seems that Locke’s outlook is to believe in the best of people. I believe that Locke would argue that the Mayor is simply trying to network with businesses and organizations to help the town in the future. College Instructor The college instructor is doing something, or better yet, not doing something that most instructors don’t do. Most instructors don’t update their course material. In the high school environment, teachers have no say as to what must be taught. They are given specific items that students must be taught year after year. In college, I would imagine that it is similar. There would be some type of academic board that decides what must be taught in a certain class to meet the requirements for that class. The teacher could make the effort to change some...

Dilemma

...The Dilemma Devry University ETHC 445 A married couple, both addicted to drugs, is unable to care for their infant daughter. She is taken from them by court order and placed in a foster home. The years pass. She comes to regard her foster parents as her real parents. They love her as they would their own daughter. When the child is 9 years old, the natural parents, rehabilitated from drugs, begin court action to regain custody. The case is decided in their favor. The child is returned to them, against her will. Do ethics support the law in this case? In reference to this dilemma the first methods from the Primary School of ethics that would prove best at solving this problem would be care based thinking. The reason that this method would work well in this particular dilemma is because of its basic principles. Care based thinking takes a stance on reversibility. Reversibility test your actions by putting yourself in the other person’s position and imagining how you would feel if you were the recipient, rather than the perpetrator, of those actions (Kidder, 2009). Having both the foster parents and the biological parents put themselves in each other’s position they would see the love they both have for the child is the common bond and she must be put before anything. So in solving this dilemma using this method the foster parents would have to follow the court order and return the child to her biological parents. In doing this they should as well communicate with...

...ETHC 3311 – Ethics Fundamentals Critical Analysis #3 Due: Friday, June 12th @ 9:00pm MDT On page 128 of McLachlan (2009), use Exercise 4.4 as a guideline to writing journal #3 with two opposing right versus right views. The 2 articles for comparison are on pages 287 to 290. They are: · article one - “ROB Ranks Wal-Mart Among Canada’s Best Employers”; · article two - “The Cost of Walmartization”. State your position after presenting the arguments from the 2 articles by answering this question: After analysis of the two articles, would you still shop at Wal-Mart? Why? Why not? Format: APA style of writing. 3 pages, not including the cover and reference pages. This is a mini example of how to treat your research paper. Of course, you will research and read on more than two opposing publications on the ethical issue of your research paper. Remember, once more, to ground your analysis in relevant course theory. While you are asked to offer your perspective (as to whether you’d shop at Walmart), you are asked to ground your rationale within an appropriate ethical framework – this is not meant to serve as an opinion paper. _____________________________________________________________________________ FORMAT Theoretical Approach of Author in Article 1 Theoretical Approach of Author in Article 2 Backup the Approaches for Author 1- Three to six sentence paragraph Backup the Approaches for Author 2- Three to six sentence paragraph Compare and Contrast Which Article is more convincing? Ethics

...ETHC 232 Week 6 You Decide “Wooden” Since being continuously employed at the “Wooden” factory for more than ten years, I am facing a truly difficult ethical decision: Am I going to blow the whistle or simply just mind my own business? You see, one of my co-workers, Karen Parse, has witnessed sparks in the area by her work station and is deeply concerned about the possibility of fire or even worse, explosion. At the factory we shave and shape up to one-thousand logs daily. It is because of what we do that there is usually, in most areas, at least an inch of wood dust, with up to three inches in others. As we all know, wood dust is a combustible material and can be explosive with the right ignition source. Karen is very worried because of this knowledge and based on what she saw with her own eyes, along with the fact that a plant in her hometown recently exploded as a result of ignited wood dust has me worried as well. Karen is new at Wooden, with only two weeks under her belt, and is pleading with me to file the complaint due to my long history with the plant. I believe I shall first seek some advice within the workplace and see if anything can be done without filing a complaint. After speaking with three other people within the company regarding the matter (the safety coordinator, area manager, and owner), I am sad to say that I am still completely lost. All three advise against taking any action which may shut down the plant for a couple days. Two days is exactly...
