Ethical Dilemmas at Work
If I were to reflect on a workplace ethical dilemma I have faced, I would choose a dilemma I am currently facing. I recently have been finding it increasingly difficult to complete my university work and my required workplace tasks. This disarray between my work and personal life has resulted in undue pressure and stress. My attempts to keep work and classes separate and balanced have fallen short mostly because of an increased demand to perform. As a result, I have been completing class assignments during work hours on company time. This conflicting behavior violates company policy and the company code of ethics. I made a difficult ethical decision based on a difficult situation yet I understand that sometimes it is necessary to draw from our own ethics and what may be in the better interest of the group or individual. It would seem that I am gradually creating a pattern of skewed thinking and am at odds with myself and the values and beliefs most important to me. Situational context has me circumventing my own belief system and, unfortunately, has allowed my decisions to be manipulated by the pressures of the situation. Understandably, this situation, driven by an unethical decision, resulted in personal embarrassment and an undesirable response from my manager (Under, 2010).
I would avoid this ethical dilemma today through a strategy of open communication with my manager. I would ask to meet with him or her to explain the dilemma and subsequent conflict of interest. The meeting would open with honest dialogue beginning with the issue of class work vs. company work and how the imbalance has negatively affected my class work, company performance and resulted in a poor ethical decision. ...Basanta Khanal Robert Howard Ethical Dilemma I am in holiday in Dubai with my little brother and mom. I have been there for a week and we are ready to head home. All three of us are at the airport getting ready to board our plane, when an armed officer comes around with a sniffer dog. I have all my bags on a trolley, and the dog sniffs at me and my mom’s bag, and passes over it, however when he gets to my little brother’s bag, he begins to get a bit more active. I look over at my brother and he’s looking a little nervous. I know he’s smoked a little marijuana in his time, but generally, he’s a good kid, and I am certainly didn’t think he’d actually be stupid enough to bring it back on the plane with him. At first I feel angry that he would do such a thing and start planning my responsibility lecture, but then I realize that I am in Dubai, and they have a zero tolerance policy on drugs, meaning my brother could be jailed for life, or worse, executed, if he does have some illicit materials in his bag. I look at my mom and realize she has come to the same conclusion and has gone pale with fear. The armed officer accompanying the dog is beginning to look more sterner with every sniff the dog takes and looks directly at me and asks me to open to the bag. Aaron Webb and employee for the company, violated company laws by posting potentially damaging information about the company online. He was caught doing it by another employee who suspected him by using the company computers to hack into his personal computer to catch him in the act, also violating company laws by violating employee privacy. Both employees have broken company policy and both should be punished. But before you take disciplinary action you have to make sure your decisions benefit the company as a whole. Whether someone is fired or not it still affects everyone. In the assignment it discusses “stakeholders”, which are people who are the closet to the problem being affected the most. Although there are usually nonverbal signs of pain, a nurse must trust the verbal signs of the patient as opposed to the nonverbal. This is true because all people have a different response to pain, and different cultures have distinct ways of showing pain and suffering. By giving pain medication upon request of the patient, I was showing autonomy towards them. This choice also lowers the patients risk for addiction since I was giving the patient a lower dose. Being a new employee and given instruction by my supervisor, I had to make a decision on whether to follow orders or refuse. Since I felt this was completely wrong and went against my morals and principals, I chose not to complete this task and handed it back to my supervisor. Unfortunately the task was carried out by another employee so community members and businesses were still deceived in thinking they were donating to a specific person’s need. The other issue that came about with these made up tags was when the items began coming into the office. Since over 100 tags were made and hung on the sharing tree, there was an overabundance of items coming into the office on a daily basis. And since the majority of those tags were made up of fake stories, no one was relying on specific items to be delivered. Those items that would go to various employees for “appreciation” gifts or as an incentive to work an extra shift were never properly logged as to what was actually received. Since the items weren’t logged in then there would be no recording of logging them out. How do you know someone hasn’t stolen a gas card or Meijer gift card for themselves? Since there was never any record of receiving them there would be no way to prove the theft.
