Subject: Contaminated GBS-Fibranafren
Background: Quality analysis has determined a trace contaminant is present in test samples for products that have already been released. The impurity is far below FDA standards and it has been determined that adverse reactions are extremely low in healthy adults; those with compromised immune systems have slightly elevated risk with prolonged use, but overall risk is low.
Decision: To disseminate information on increased risk and allow consumers to make an informed decision.
Reasons for the decision: Consideration of the problem acknowledged our duties of truthfulness and reparation. While this decision does not affect many, keeping in mind our values and shareholders enables us to avoid engaging in harmful actions and ensure actions taken are consistent with our core values and risk management protocols. Our consumers will not be put at unreasonable risk so that we may make profit; we have a responsibility to provide meaningful, accurate information. Customers need to be given enough information to make informed decisions about product choice and use and accept the responsibility for those choices.
Forward-Looking Conclusion: I want to thank you for your attention to this matter. G-BioSport is committed to creating an engaging and challenging culture that adheres to effective core values during both good and bad times, and while disseminating this information might be awkward, our duty to our employees and customers must come first as per our core values and policies. The Ethics Game Simulation

...The Ethics Game Simulation November 11, 2010 The Ethics Game Simulation This paper will discuss the ethical issues, the decision-making steps, perspectives used, and lenses chosen which helped to influence management decisions. These concepts will show strong correlations within the current workplace environment. The Quality Control Manager is responsible for documentation of test results and drafts regular production reports. This position helps G-BioSports to maintain their high standards and quality assurance within their industry. The first scenario took place after the Lab Director informed the Quality Control Manager that specimens received at his lab were found with a trace contamination of 100% in all the samples. Unfortunately these results were two weeks late and products from these specimens had already been released and shipped out to consumers. Although the contamination found was well below FDA standards, the QCM is faced with many concerning issues and decisions to be made. A few examples are; who needed to be informed and how quickly, how would information should be disseminated without creating a threat or scare to the public and stakeholders. How serious was this contamination and how much product was actually sent out. This also includes to what degree of ethics and legal concerns would need to address. Nevertheless, there are many concerning factors. As a manager, gathering all the facts is an important first step. Who to inform and how this information...

Ethics Review

...Ethics Review Team B reviewed the Ethics Game Simulation and the Ethic Responsibility Project completed individually by members of team B during week three of ETH/316. Each team member has provided a review of there findings. Stephen Stephen completed the ethics game simulation’s two scenarios. The first scenario had to do with sexual harassment and the second scenario had to do with falsified data for a potential product. Both scenarios seemed simple on the surface, but once further research was conducted the answers to each scenario became a little more difficult. The scenarios took Stephen through a process to achieve the desired result and explained why things needed to be don’t in a certain way. For example, a big decision is to analyze all the information a then make a decision what is the first thing to do. For the first scenario, the first thing to do figure out what the problem is which meant talking to the female worker and explaining that all attempts would be made to keep her information confidential, however dependent on the allegations that it may not be completely possible. The next step was to find out who the primary stakeholders were. This was a difficult task for the author that prompted a review of outline materials referencing ethical stakeholders. The ethical lens was used to determine what the author should do initially was the Rights and Responsibilities Lens (Ethics game, 2007). The rights and responsibilities lens allowed the author to look at...

Enron

...Ethical Culture Project PART 1: Enron displayed all four cultural dimensions which are: high-risk taking, outcome orientation, aggressiveness, and low/no people orientation as a company. Kenny Lay, who was the CEO and Chairman from 1985-2002, displayed high-risk taking during the Vahalla scandal. He had two oil traders, Louis Borget and Tom Mastroeni that would make bets for Enron on whether the price of oil would rise or fall. This is a risky market because you can lose ten times your original investment, and it was hard to make the amount of money legitimately that they were at the time. Borget and Mastroeni were gambling with Enron’s money. Jeff Skilling organized high-risk company trips where he would plan dangerous activities that Enron employees would participate in. Andy Fastow, Enron’s chief financial officer, wanted to please his boss, Skilling, so he tried to increase Enron’s stock up even though they were 30 million dollars in debt. He got hundreds of special companies to prop up Enron’s stock by making Enron debt disappear. To outside investors it looked like cash was coming in, but Enron was hiding their debt in Fastow’s companies so investors couldn’t see it. Fastow was participating in outcome orientation, and Skilling encouraged him to do so. Skilling created a very aggressive company culture for Enron by implementing a performance review committee (PRC) that people were graded a one to a five and 10% people had to be a five and if they were they would be fired...

Memo Addressing Core Issues on Topic of Ethics in Finance

...Memo addressing core issues on topic of Ethics in Finance Winter 2011 Hsiu Chang Ethic is useful because it makes business stable and predicable. In a game, a cheater who is not caught will continue to reap huge rewards. However, if the trend continue, it will encourage other players to cheat or leave the game because they are being driven out of business. If a business operator always has to wonder if the other side is playing by the same rule, if a customer constantly wonder if the vendor is overcharging for the invoice, then business slow down, becomes inefficient. However, many cheaters are not caught or punished. "Business Ethics" is the third episode of the fifth season of the television series The Office. One of the female purchasing officer has been sleeping with a vendor in order to get discount for the entire purchasing department, and Outback Steakhouse coupons. When this is discovered, the head of the company turned a blind eye because it is good for the balance sheet (Wikipedia, 2011). Having good ethic provides a clear conscience, and if there was an ethical problem, shared the advantage gained by cheating with the entire team will once again clear the conscience. Ethic in finance is important because it will provide a clear picture of the company. The leader of the company cannot see where the company can go if they do not know where the company is. However, accountant in a non-public company works for the leader and this agents’ fiduciary duty...

Dow Corning and the Silicone Breast Implants

...well-being. On average people spend in excess of seven billion dollars per year on plastic surgery. The obsession American women have come to believe is normal concerning their physical beauty drives women to plastic surgeons by the millions each year. Women like Selma Hayek, Pamela Anderson, and Dolly Parton are all in essence physical role models for the average woman. Many companies have created products that are used to enhance the female physic from the inside out. This writing will explore the lengths a company will go to in order to gain profit from women who are desperate to enhance their physical appearance. In addition, the ethical practices of a certain company that were set aside to maintain revenues and side step litigation are examined within this paper. The Dow Corning Corporation was once thought to be a stellar company in terms of its ethical business practices. The Dow Corning Corporation was established in 1897 by a Canadian Chemist named Herbert Henry Dow (Dow Corning Breast Implants, 2011). Dow Corning Corporation rapidly became one of the few major manufacturing producers that made silicone products. Considering the fact that the Dow Corning Corporation is the second largest manufacturer of chemicals in the world and the greatest producer of plastic products; logically, the offering of silicone breast implants was inevitable when women began seeking reconstructive and enhancement surgery. Although, with great success comes the opportunity for greed to rear its...

Shades of Gray (Ethical Behavior)

...The problem to be investigated is looking into shades of gray when it comes to ethical behavior. For years, companies have been operating within the law yet displayed very questionable behavior. Companies like Goldman and Sachs utilizing questionable trading techniques in order to gain a financial profit while leaving behind companies in the dust and eliminating hundreds if not thousands of jobs in the process. Ethics is more than doing what’s right or wrong. It’s a way of life and how we can have an effect on others. Question 1: Go back through the case and make a list of each action or practice that could be called a gray area. The Layering Strategy: This was formulated in the late 1920 as a way to utilize one company’s money to invest in another. In the case of Goldman, he used his own customers to make money. He created an investment company and buys 90% of the shares in that company with its own money. Because the shares have sold so well, the public wants a piece of the company. So, the shares that Goldman initially bought for, say, $100, it is able to turn around and sell to the public for $110. He would then continue the cycle with another company and the price would climb. The Laddering Strategy: In 1990, the birth of the Internet age just started its peak. Goldman found another way to capitalize on this boom. Much like Goldman’s layering strategy, the Laddering strategies end result is also a crash. With the laddering strategy, this was reserved for Goldman’s...

Challenger Catastrophy

...The Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster was a preventable disaster that NASA tried to cover up by calling it a mysterious accident. However, two men had the courage to bring the real true story to the eyes of the public and it is to Richard Cook and Roger Boisjoly to whom we are thankful. Many lessons can be learned from this disaster to help prevent further disasters and to improve on organizations ethics. One of the many key topics behind the Challenger disaster is the organizational culture. One of the aspects of an organizational culture is the observable culture of an organization that is what one sees and hears when walking around an organization. There are four parts to the observable culture, stories, heroes, rites and rituals and symbols. The first one is stories, which is tales told among an organization’s members. In the Challenger Space Shuttle incident there were mainly four organizations thrown together to form one, Morton Thiokol, Marshall Space Flight Center, Johnson Space Center and NASA Headquarters. All of these organizations had the same type of stories to be told. At Morton Thiokol, they talked about their product and their big deal, which they received from NASA. At NASA, it’s members retold stories of the previous space missions and being the first people to have landed on the moon. Second are their heroes. At Morton Thiokol, their heroes might have been the founders of the organization or it’s top executives like Charles Locke or Jerry Mason. At NASA, their...

John Case

...| Dewey, Chetum, and Howe | Memo To: Dewey, Chetum, and Howe | | From: | XXXXX | cc: | Dewey, Chetum, and Howe | Date: | December 4, 2015 | Re: | PharmaCare (John) | | | As requested, I am writing this memo to provide details about a case that has been brought before us at Dewey, Chetum, and Howe. John, a past pharmacist at PharmaCARE, came into the firm with apprehensions of PharmaCARE’s usage of AD23, the establishment’s number one selling diabetes drug. A few years ago PharmaCARE’s study showed the AD23 would also slow the advancement of Alzheimer’s disease. This led John and the other pharmacologists that he led to reformulate the drug to capitalize on its outcome. To evade the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) inspection, PharmaCARE founded an exclusively held company, CompCARE, to function as a compounding pharmacy. This company would retail the new invention to people by prescription only. CompCARE profited from PharmaCARE’s standing, records, systems, and trades and marketing skill, and within several months the health community was talking about AD23. Response was good, mainly amongst Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans Affairs patients. Realizing the chance to get additional income, CompCARE started marketing AD23 straight to customers and promoting AD23 right to clinics, hospitals, and physician offices, although compounding pharmacies are not allowed to market medicines in large qualities for common use. To dodge this provision, CompCARE pushed...

Not only does USAA communicate with members through online media, they have created other outlets for employees to communicate with each other. These outlets are not that effective for Financial Centers that are placed away from our Home Office and Campuses. Communication needs improvement between Home Office and the Financial Centers, leaving disconnects between the two; leaving members upset and in turn give Financial Centers a bad satisfaction score. Teamwork plays a big part in USAA to providing the best service to our members, yet some get left out of the game. My goal is to try to get everyone involved and on the same page promoting USAA’s mission. In addition to collaboration,...

Assisted Suicide Research Paper

...innocent people’s suffering since the 5th century. By definition, assisted suicide is when people decide they would not like to live anymore and they get help from a doctor to make their decision a reality. It is often done by euthanasia, or a prescription of lethal pills. Over a thousand years later, physician-assisted suicide continues to be controversial topic in society. It is an extremely important topic because many people suffer from diseases that limit their quality of life. Recently, some stories of terminally ill people deciding they would like to end their lives have made the news and raised attention of both supporters and opposers of assisted suicide. Though it is controversial, there are many reasons why assisted suicide is ethical and should be legalized everywhere and viewed as a gentle solution to unbearable suffering. On November 1, 2014, Brittany Maynard, a victim of severe brain cancer, decided to end her life with dignity (Lord 1). She didn’t want her friends and family to watch her deteriorate and lose her sanity. This is an important point for both sides to examine. No one suffering from a violent cancerous disease, or any disease for that matter, wants their loved ones to see them turn into something they never wanted to be. In these situations, the patients become their illness. On the other side, no person wants to watch someone close to them slip deeper and deeper into something painful that they can’t control. If your dear friend, sister, mother, or...

...all involved. The Players Ken Lay was the “Captain of the ship” for Enron since it’s beginnings. A driven and money hungry individual, he sought to advance his wealth and that of his company above all else. The exact reasons as to why are very much up for interpretation, but one thing is clear: he loved being rich. To this effect, Ken Lay enlisted the help of many other less than ethical members of the corporate world to help build and grow Enron. Andrew Fastow and Jeff Skilling were the “sidekicks” of Ken Lay and architects of many of the ways Enron “cheated” the system to get ahead and hide what was really going on. Mr. Tanzi, CEO and founder of Parmalat, was also a captain of “an unethical ship”. He was found to have enticed investors into providing large financial backing through superfluous schemes and then quickly sent the money overseas to offshore holding accounts, while running up the company debt from large financial banks. In this case, Mr. Tanzi claimed he had no knowledge of the shell game going on with investors, nor did he know about the financial “cat and mouse” game being played with the financial auditors that...
