In everyday situations, managers are expected to be more than just the rule enforcers of an organization. They are expected to be the role models and provide guidance for the employees who work under them to develop them to their full potential. Every day managers are faced with an ethical dilemma of some nature and they are expected to work through them and make the proper decision to better themselves and the company they work for. A few ethical issues a manager would face would be hiring, performance evaluations, discipline, termination, diversity, and harassment. The topic I chose to focus on for this paper is moral and ethical issues managers face when dealing with hiring new employees for their company.
The moral and ethical issues faced by managers dealing with hiring new employees are that it could come off that employers could tend to be a little discriminating when it comes to choosing the right fit for their company. Although most companies insist that they are an Equal Opportunity Employer, some may say that may not always be the case. Depending on what your company advertises, an employer must select a candidate that appeals to their type of clientele.
To elaborate, a hotel manager would not choose a candidate for a position at the front desk of a hotel who has tattoos all over them or are not well groomed. Many may say that this is discrimination against appearance, but you have to consider the type of clientele a hotel gets. There are many business travelers who hotels will receive business from simply by word of mouth, therefore you want to provide service that appeals to the typical everyday business traveler. However, if it came down to hiring a sloppy-dressed, over-weight man who happens to have five years of experience or a stylish, charismatic young girl with no experience, but a great personality to make the first impression of your...

Managers are often faced with ethical issues that allow them to make decision based on company policies and federal law. But some mangers don’t always follow company and federal law when it comes to the hiring of employees and are sometimes bias with certain applicant. Part of my job as a manger is to recruit and interview potential candidates for available potions in my company, and by doing this, the first thing I have to do is to screen the applications to see if the applicant meets qualification for the open positions, and if they do the next step is to begin the selection process. There are certain questions an application that refer to age, sex, race and citizenship status that is required as part of the verification process. The application process also calls for prior employment history, as well as the reason for leaving or wanting to leave your current or prior job. Any of the information that the candidate provides is to be used as a lead to gather background information and check references. As a manager I have an ethical responsibility to hiring for the needs of the business as well as hiring the right person for the job. Ethical Issues and Management Paper

...Ethical Issues and Management Paper I am choosing to deal with diversity in the workplace. Diversity means many things; diversity can deal with sexuality, race, religion, and male/female and so on. This is a bit personal for me because it touches me because I have had many experiences. Regardless of how you look at it the world and the workplace is a diverse place. The world has always been however it is relatively new that they start integrating races, religion, and other diversities into the workplace. Most can be considered diverse so many people should be able to relate to this. The world has come to realize that bigotry has no place in the workplace and that they have to be more diverse. Diversity is a very sensitive topic as it affects everyone differently dependent upon what race or creed you’re. As a manager they’re many moral and ethical dilemmas involved with diversity in itself. The first is dependent upon what you’re, if you fall into what may be considered a minority or woman. Let’s use a female manager of a retail store for example. Over the years the job market has been very unfair to women all together. Just over the last 20 years or so have women been accepted into higher ranking roles in business. So they’re many ethical challenges that they face as they progress. Good ethics indicates that a manager should be fair and just with its hiring system along with its promotion system. Whoever has the best resume coupled with job experience......

Ethical Issues

...Business and Management Ethical Issues in Management Ethical Issues in Management The tasks of a supervisor go far beyond management. In fact, supervisors have to make vital decisions all the time that affect their employees, and possibly the business depending on the situation. Managers take part in hiring, performance, evaluation, discipline, and termination. They are also involved in any circumstance that pertains to harassment and diversity, and they must make a conscious effort to set a good example for their employees. The following paper will focus primarily on termination; describe the moral and ethical issues faced by managers dealing with termination; explain how relationships between social issues and ethically responsible management practices apply to termination; provide a workplace example of an ethical dilemma involving termination. Termination In the case of termination, performance evaluations, verbal and written warnings can be moral issues as they all entail truthfulness, evenhandedness, and the self-respect of the individual. Managers play a critical role in increasing engagement and building an ethical way of life for the most part sensible issues of company ethics. We need not determine all the rational disputes involving the utilitarian’s and the deontologists. Regardless of the different approaches, in the bulk of situations both techniques, if cautiously, delicately, and carefully applied, will generate the same......

...am Scam and Ethics Running head: ETHICAL ISSUES IN SATYAM SCAM 1 A Study of Ethical Issues in Satyam Scam Haresh M Patel (Roll No.2234) B.K.School of Business Management (Evening Programme) ?Ethical Issues in Satyam Scam Abstract “Reputation is an idle and most false imposition: oft got without merit, and lost without deserving”. Failed institutions, including Lehman Brothers, Enron and Satyam, would stand a testimony to this affray in a post-mortem analysis. This paper discusses corporate ethical issues involved in ‘Satyam Scam’ from a compliance perspective. It makes a distinction between legal and ethical compliance mechanisms and also shows that the legal compliance mechanism has clearly proven to be inadequate as it lacks the moral firepower to restore confidence and the ability to build trust. The concepts of freedom of indifference and freedom for excellence provide a theoretical basis for explaining why legal compliance mechanisms are insufficient in 2 dealing with fraudulent practices and may not be addressing the real and fundamental issues that inspire ethical behavior. The focus of the virtues in governance is to establish a series of practical responses which depend on the consistent application of core values and principles as well as commitment to ethical business practice. In my opinion, No one makes it to the top ranks of corporate management without a healthy amount of self-assurance. Confidence underlies decisive, strong leadership, but does......

Secondly let’s explain how the relationship between social issues and ethical responsible management practices which pertain to discipline. Lastly, provide a workplace example of an ethical dilemma pertaining to discipline. Also what legal aspects did management face during this dilemma and what legalities governed or should have governed the decision. First and foremost discipline is one of the major issues faced by managers regarding ethics, morals, and values. Managers must conduct themselves with the utmost diplomacy when dealing with disciplinary actions toward employees. Respect is a two way street and must be adhered to by both management and employees. Nothing is worst than a manager who says one thing but their actions tell a whole other story. Hypocritical managers lose respect from their employees. Managers who have certain attributes like honesty, integrity, and trust are taken more seriously when it comes to disciplinary actions. When dealing with discipline managers should also adhere to acceptable moral and ethical values of our society. Unfortunately not all managers in leadership positions exhibit the same value system of higher standards. Personally let’s go on the...
