Ethics Case Study – Jerry McCall
University of Phoenix

Ethics Case Study In health care today, there is sometimes a lax attitude regarding rules and regulations. Some allied health professionals may be tempted to inappropriately use their position because of a personal feeling of empowerment. There are always ethical and legal issues that influence outcomes and this care is just another example of the difficulties that allied health professionals face every day. Jerry is trained as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and currently working as a medical assistant. Jerry’s training allows him to provide general assessments, administer medications, and provide treatments. As an LPN, he is able to administer oral medications, as well as some injectable medications. Also, as a medical assistant, Jerry is also responsible for varying levels of clerical work, which may include the writing of scripts. This is more of a common practice today because of electronic prescription software. However, all prescriptions must be originated by a licensed physician and must undersigned by this same provider. Even though this patient is a personal friend of Dr. Williams, the same prescription standard needs to apply. Jerry would need to contact the physician to obtain a verbal order, which he needs to document appropriately before he can give the patient the script. Whether the fact that the medication is for fear of flying or if it is a critically needed medication like anti-hypertensive’s, the same policy must apply. The patient of Dr. Williams stated that he needs this prescription to fly. In this case, valium was prescribed due to the patient’s acute fear of flying. Should Jerry choose to call in a refill for Jerry, the potential legal ramifications could extend beyond him to his employers, his peers and the patient. Not only is Jerry risking his license, he is putting...

Engaging Undergraduates in Discussions About Ethics in Computing

...Undergraduates in Discussions about Ethics in Computing Brian R. von Konsky Jim Ivins Susan J. Gribble Curtin University of Technology Department of Computing Software Engineering Education Research Group GPO Box U1987, PERTH WA Australia bvk@cs.curtin.edu.au Abstract o Third-year computing students enrolled in a software engineering subject were introduced to the Australian Computer Society (ACS) Code of Ethics in the context of a computing professional’s obligation to manage quality, safety and reliability. Following an introductory lecture, case study scenarios were interactively discussed during class. Immediately afterwards, students were surveyed to assess their self-perceived and actual ability to apply the ACS Code to another similar scenario. Of the 68 students who gave their informed consent to participate in the study, 34% reported being fully comfortable with applying the ACS Code of Ethics, while 63% were somewhat comfortable. In justifying multiple-choice options for dealing with a new case study scenario, 37% provided a good justification for their choice, 48% provided a poor justification, and 15% provided no justification. A further qualitative analysis of the responses suggests the need for formal assessment of ethics in computing education, and highlights the importance of improving the perceived relevance of ethics to students and the need for in-depth treatment of ethical issues. ...am Scam and Ethics Running head: ETHICAL ISSUES IN SATYAM SCAM 1 A Study of Ethical Issues in Satyam Scam Haresh M Patel (Roll No.2234) B.K.School of Business Management (Evening Programme) ?Ethical Issues in Satyam Scam Abstract “Reputation is an idle and most false imposition: oft got without merit, and lost without deserving”. Failed institutions, including Lehman Brothers, Enron and Satyam, would stand a testimony to this affray in a post-mortem analysis. This paper discusses corporate ethical issues involved in ‘Satyam Scam’ from a compliance perspective. It makes a distinction between legal and ethical compliance mechanisms and also shows that the legal compliance mechanism has clearly proven to be inadequate as it lacks the moral firepower to restore confidence and the ability to build trust. The concepts of freedom of indifference and freedom for excellence provide a theoretical basis for explaining why legal compliance mechanisms are insufficient in 2 dealing with fraudulent practices and may not be addressing the real and fundamental issues that inspire ethical behavior. The focus of the virtues in governance is to establish a series of practical responses which depend on the consistent application of core values and principles as well as commitment to ethical business practice. In my opinion, No one makes it to the top ranks of corporate management without a healthy amount of self-assurance. Confidence underlies decisive, strong leadership, but does......
