...hard work is a way to express yourself and reinforce yourself to your employer or to others in your peer group. One of the things I judge myself by is how much I work to improve myself and my situation for the better. In regards to the image that I got when I read this quote, it was of someone working their way up to better themselves and to be acknowledge by their peers. I felt it was a motivational essay with a very serious, urgent and yet light tone that pulls the reader in so that its message is delivered. He goes on to say that “For nonconformity the world whips you with its displeasure.” (Pearson Education Company). This statement I believe goes together with the inspiring statement I mentioned because sometimes a good work ethic involves doing something different from the norm to be recognized. An HR office of today could have thousands of resumes that all generally look the same and yet it is that one that is different that manages to catch the HR...

Ralph Waldo Emerson Worldview

...Jonathan Veldhuyzen Professor Matthew Towles English 201-002 11/21/2014 Ralph Waldo Emerson: His own God and Transcendentalist Worldview “The foregoing generations beheld God and nature face to face; we, though their own eyes. Why should not we also enjoy an original relation to the universe? Why should not we have a poetry and philosophy of insights and not of tradition, and a religion by revelation to us,” (940, 941) were the words written by Emerson in the introduction of his renown work “Nature” as he espoused that men should not necessarily believe in a God through ideals seen in the Bible and evidenced in nature, but rather use their own logic through poetry and philosophy to determine their own God. His writings espoused beliefs that do not reflect a Christian worldview, but rather bases man’s salvation on his own intuition. Emerson was a rebel in his time, he had independent views that did not align to any system of values. According to “Anthology of American Literature,” Bronson Alcott declares that “Emerson’s church consists of one member-himself.” These words signify that Emerson’s ideas and values were so radical for the time that very few people shared his beliefs. Yet, he was not alone in espousing thinking that seemed somewhat pantheistic and contradictory to what he had preached many years earlier. During the 1830’s Ralph Waldo Emerson joined with some other literary authors of the day in supporting a set of values that looked beyond a Supreme Being for...

Emerson Final

...Emerson is often considered the father of the transcendental philosophical tradition. Transcendentalists believe in three major principles: individualism, idealism and the divinity of nature. The Transcendentalists believed that an individual could “transcend” or go beyond the physical world of the senses into a different world of spiritual experience through free will and intuition. Emerson and the Transcendentalists believed that God was not distant and unreachable, but knowable through our own souls and through a deep connection with nature. The central themes in all of his works were individuality, freedom, human self-realization and relation to nature. In his essay on Nature, Emerson explores the relationship between humans and nature. He asserts that the beauty of nature can be understood by people only when one is in solitude. The true understanding of significance of nature is hindered by the hustle and bustle of daily life. Emerson is of the view that we take nature for granted. For example, we take the stars for granted because we know that they will always be there. However, although they are “accessible” in that they are visible to us, they are also inaccessible due to the distance between us. We can never physically touch them. However, there is an inter-connectedness among the nature, soul and the divine that we miss. “Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.” He feels that we must view nature from the eyes of a child. A child sees things in new an unbiased...

Tok External Assessment Essay - Knowledge Gives Us a Sense of Who We Are.” to What Extent Is This True in the Human Sciences and Ethics

...TOK “Knowledge gives us a sense of who we are.” To what extent is this true in the Human Sciences and Ethics? Socrates once said, “To know, is to know that you know nothing. That is the meaning of true knowledge” [1]. In similar vein, Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Knowledge is knowing that we cannot know” [1]. A great Indian master, Nisargadatta Maharaj once quoted, “To know what you are, you must first investigate and know what you are not” [2]. What were Socrates, Emerson, Nisargadatta hinting at? Is there any such thing as ‘knowledge’ and if so, can this knowledge ever give us a sense of who we are? Is there one concrete sense of ‘who we are’ that persists all throughout our lives or is our sense of identity a montage of ever-changing psychological and behavioral dynamics? Is the knower even capable of using ways of knowing to grasp a sense of who he/she is? If so, which way of knowing is more trustworthy and which area of knowledge should these ways of knowing be applied to, to get a better sense of who one is? ...Professional Presence Daniel Charlong Professional Presence CS204 September 16th, 2014 After doing my research, I came across a company called Rosemont who merged with Emerson Company back in 1976. It has locations all across the globe and is in almost every county that that we have. The culture here is the most mixed that I have ever seen or even heard of. Every race from African American, Chinese, Caucasian, Japanese, Somali and quite a bit more across the board. Rosemount Engineering Company was founded in 1956 as a supplier of precision products for the aerospace industry. The company quickly grew with the success and expansion of the U.S. space program and continued to apply the same rigid standards that aided NASA’s success to the development of breakthrough products for the process industries. After reading about it, I tried to picture what it would look like to work there and I stepped outside of myself and looked into the roof of the building and saw what looked like an ant farm. Hundreds of people that have a hard time understanding each other's words, but work together marvelously. Their commitment to the culture is reflected in a dedication to their work environment and company values. As for culture, they strive to provide every employee with the kind of work environment that will allow them to thrive and be very successful. The way that they do this is using mutual respect...

Lit Review

...Literature Review Sample (note: this is taken from a complete paper and is an excerpt) This present study uses the research conducted by Conroy and Emerson (2004) as a model for investigation. Conroy and Emerson used surveys to elicit ordered responses regarding the acceptability of particular vignettes. These vignettes have been used by other researchers and were based largely on works by Longnecker et. al. (1989), Clark (1996), Fritzsche and Becker, (1982), and Harris (1991). Many studies evaluate the ethical attitudes of females versus males. Most of these studies, more than two thirds, report a significant gender effect. Interestingly, in every case, female participants were reported as being more ethical than males (Albaum and Peterson, 2006). Borkowski and Ugras (1998) completed a meta-analysis of 47 studies and concluded that female students exhibit “stronger ethical attitudes” than men. Beltramini, Peterson, and Kozmetsky (1984) determined that there was a “consistent tendency for the females in the sample to express more concern than the males in the sample, regardless of the issue” (p. 199). Peterson et al. (1991) replicated their previous study and corroborated the earlier findings and suggested that there was a “heightened level of concern” among college students with respect for ethical issues. Not all researchers agree that women in general have a higher ethical attitude than men. Some researchers concluded that men and women make ethical decisions...

Economic and Ethics

...PHL 212 Professor Christopher Emerson Jun 16, 2010 Economics Solve Dimension In Ethical Dilemma There are a lot of ethical dilemma problems in our society, and need us to give a final comments. By the hard work of finding the results, we find that most of people prefer to solve the problem by using the rules, not moral rules, these are the rules which can keep our society's orders, but we usually forget to use the moral ways to do analysis. We should know that ethical dilemma problems are belong to ethical problems, so we can't drop the trial of using different kinds of sides to see the problems. There are a very old and famous story that almost all the people know in the world --- Adam and Eve. If they followed the rules, they could stay in that heaven world, but if they stole and ate the Forbidden fruit, they could have the happiness of both in spirit and body, and they also could their own children. But if they did this, they also have to face a morality problem. We can treat this problem as a people facing the personal value and social value, which one the person will choose. Everyone knows that the social value is more important, but it is really hard to choose that when we face a big and attractive personal value. In our book, chapter 6, Social Contract, we can know that the ultraism is limited because of people's selfishness, more or less. So the best we can do is choosing the ways to solve problems get as closed as social value, and to accord with social value...

Angell Professor of Information Systems Information Systems Department London School of Economics and Political Science London, United Kingdom Preamble It is common for speakers at computer security conferences to tell audiences that 'they should do' this, and 'should do' that. The word 'should' is regularly thrown about as some jumbled-up mixture of efficiency and ethics, without any justification of the imperative. This paper will concentrate on the ethical issues, and so it will quickly dispose of 'efficiency,' leaving detailed argument for another time. Then, taking the devil's advocate position, it will focus on demolishing the certainty behind the ethical obligation, by questioning the role of ethics in society in general, but specifically in computer security. Indeed this paper will claim that an unsuspected morality and ritual lies behind many real-world security choices and much so-called 'objective' academic analysis. Furthermore, it will propose that such moralistic positions are highly problematic, and that all recommendations phrased in terms of virtue rather than pragmatism be treated as highly suspect. This polemical paper formed the basis of a keynote address given at the 5th Computer Security Conference, held in Las Vegas on the 20th-21st April 2006. 4 Angell, JISSec adfh The quest for efficiency, where...

It Takes Courage

...| It Takes Courage | Unit 1 Assignment 1 | | Nadine Scusselle | 9/27/2013 | | “Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right.” ~~~Ralph Waldo Emerson Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines courage as, “the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous.” Courage is the motivator that allows a person to step outside of a comfort zone and persist forward with an idea. Courage provides the enthusiasm to grab onto the idea and see that idea through to completion. A person is capable of being persistent and enthusiastic about an idea or a concept; but without courage, setbacks or negativity can cause the persistence and enthusiasm to wane. In the video “Manal al-Sharif: A Saudi woman who dared to drive,” from http://www.ted.com/talks/manal_al_sharif_a_saudi_woman_who_dared_to_drive.html, there is a story of courage. In American society, it has been almost a century since the end of the Women’s Right Movement. While women may still face issues within the society, they have the ability to face those issues without the ridicules once imposed prior to the movement. In Manal al-Sharif’s video, the story portrays a whole different societal view. In Memphis, TN there is a law that is still on the books to date. This law states that whenever a woman is driving a vehicle, a man...
