Evaluating Communication Strategies You are working as a human service worker at a local United Way agency that serves several multicultural clients. In addition to the multicultural aspect, the agency also serves children, women, the elderly, and the homeless. Your manager has asked you to decide the best communication approach for each of these clients.
About the Clients In the human services profession it is becoming increasingly more important to know and understand the different cultures and their beliefs. When it comes to communicating effectively with people from different cultures, it can be of great help if you first understand the social and psychological forces that drive their verbal and non-verbal behavior. It is important to encompass skills like warmth, authenticity, empathy, permissiveness, and acceptance.
Effective Strategies and Techniques Empathy refers to the ability to understand someone else’s point of view and ideas. When a client feels understood, and they think you are more understanding to their point of view, they are more likely to accept and listen to new ideas. Being genuine is the expression of true feelings. Being genuine can be of big usefulness to people in the human services industry. It is important to also be objective. Seeing things from an outside point of view can help the human services worker to be subjective. Self-awareness is the quality of knowing oneself. This can help to convey one’s values, feeling’s, attitudes, and beliefs. Acceptance is an important tool because it shows the clients you believe their beliefs are worthy of consideration.
Multi-Cultural Awareness When working in the human services industry it is important to have awareness of other cultures and their practices. Clients will be more accepting of good or bad news...

Evaluating Communication Strategies

...Evaluating Communication Strategies Ashley Billger HSM/ 210 06/26/2013 Duane Smith Evaluating Communication Strategies Working and helping out in any sort of community function I would need to know every approach to help a person. I need to know how I could better assist a client but using different techniques to better assist. Getting to know the clients past and present situation would be a good start. I would need to know what they feel like they need the most help with. I will start with Children that I would be assisting. The approach I would use for a child would be the Behavior Therapy Approach and focusing on using my patients knowing children may not understand their situation. Using direct and active problem solving to help with new skills. Working with Women I would definitely need to know their past behaviors and any issues. Issues like abuse or drug issues are just a few items named to discuss. Better to say this as psychoanalytic therapy and using listening as an approach. Elderly people I would focus on humanistic approach while using Acceptance so I can accept who they have become and their past life and current struggles. Lastly for homeless clients I would focus on Humanistic approach while using empathy. I feel any individuals that are living in a shelter if that, need empathy. They also need listening and communication feedback. I believe this could help get them back on track and encourage them to strive and work for a better future. All of...

Hsm210 - Wk 8 - Check Point - Evaluating Communication Strategies

...Check Point: Evaluating Communication Strategies HSM/210 January 17, 2014 Check Point: Evaluating Communication Strategies In order to communicate effectively with the multicultural group of women, children, the elderly and homeless, it is important to first learn how to communicate with them. To reach an understanding with each group it is essential to appreciate and understand each one of them, and to be kind and honest with them all when giving any kind of feedback or sharing experiences. It is also good to keep yourself in check to make sure you are aware of how your behavior and personality is affecting others. When you interact with each group, you should accept every person for who they are and not the current state of their life in general. Furthermore, you must show interest in helping them, while having the patience and understanding to do so (Burger & Youkeles, 2004, p. 195). One of the best strategies used for communicating with each of these clients are listening, communicating, giving honest feedback, observing their visual cues in order to gain insight, or to clarify their situations back to them to make sure you understand it by highlighting their struggles. Then summarize the situation and struggles to see what their most current, pressing needs are that you could help them take care of (Burger & Youkeles, 2004, p. 202). Moreover, in order to adapt your communication approach from one individual to the next you must be aware......

...Evaluating and Selecting Communication Channels MGT/521 One of the most important characteristics of successful relationships is the use of effective communication. Effective communications are characterized by achieving both the successful transfer as well as the understanding of meaning of the information being communicated to the greatest degree possible (Robbins & Judge, 2011). Understanding the functions of communication and the elements of the communication process itself will maximize the probability that messages communicated will yield the highest degree of understanding of the intended meaning by the recipients. A critical element of the communication process that influences the degree of understanding of meaning as much as the formulation of the message itself is the communication channel selected for its delivery. The focus of this paper will be on evaluating and selecting a communication channel based on the nature and complexity of the message to be delivered. The selection of communication channels and the reasons for their selections in the following essay are based off the three Communication Channel Scenarios located on the student website. Evaluating and Selecting Communication Channels Scenario 1 As the Marketing Manager for a new beverage product that has done well in the United States, I’ve been directed by the Vice President of Operations to develop a strategy within one week to enter the product into the global......

...Learning Team B Week Two Reflection MGT 311 Learning Team B Week Two Reflection The first two weeks of this course have had several objectives. Some of the objectives of the first week include: evaluating individual characteristics of employees, determining managerial methods based on individual employee characteristics, and analyzing the influence of individual characteristic on organizational performance. Week one focused on individual characteristics of the employee. The second week of the course has had the following objectives: determining strategies that will increase the motivation of the employees and creating a more efficient organizational communication. One of the discussions we were comfortable with revolves around efficient communication in the organization. Difficulties challenge managers to have an efficient communication system within an organization because of the unpredictable ideas and diversity commonplace today. However, although challenging to design a good communication system; if it succeeds, then the company has more chances of reaching positive employee relationships. A topic that seemed difficult to discuss, refers to determining managerial methods based on individual employee characteristics. The students suggest that managers would not find it easy to calibrate their actions based on employees’ behaviors. From the objectives that were discussed during both Weeks’ readings, we learned that in any type of business there are diverse......

All successes start with a plan and there is no exception when it comes to marketing; therefore, an organization develops a marketing plan to use as a tool during the marketing process, which involve different aspects of the four Ps. The marketing plan describes the marketing environment and market position of a business, outlines marketing objectives and strategies (such as identifying the product and the target customers, reaching customers, and retaining customers), and identifies how the company will implement and control the strategies. I understand now that creating and strategically implementing a marketing plan is crucial to the success of a business (along with a business plan first). ...Monitoring and evaluating marketing communications is a difficult process with imprecise outcomes. Critically review this statement for both on-line and off-line campaigns, making reference to appropriate theory, the organisation and tools previously selected.
