September 30, 2011 Competition Good or Bad

Imagine being in a small town anywhere. The children are out on the diamond stretching and getting ready to have an action packed game of baseball. Parents are all congregating around the fence picking the perfect spot to see their little leaguer. Everyone is ready for America’s favorite past time to begin. Now imagine this scene with no score board. No cheers from the stands as the last pitch is thrown and the runner sprints across home plate to get the winning run. No disappointed children lining up with the victors on the field swapping “good game” high fives. Children returning home never knowing if their hard work and perseverance paid off. Is competition beneficial amongst children? Suzanne Sievert, in her essay, "It's Not Just How We Play That Matters," states that “competition between children is beneficial, because it teaches children how to work hard at something”. I agree with Sievert’s statement. Competitions build character in a child. It teaches them how to lose gracefully. It also demonstrates to a child that they cannot receive everything they want. Sievert states "games and contests illustrate the importance of drive and determination" (321). I agree people must demonstrate the importance of hard work. When a child studies extremely hard all though school and is awarded valedictorian on graduation day he/she illustrated the drive and determination to be the best they can be. They worked to excel higher then all the other graduating class. What if all children were graded the same? What would be the point if there is no reward at the end? I have witnessed my children light up on numerous occasions when they have performed better in a sports or school then other children. All of my children had to play at least one sport a year. My middle son tried his hardest to get out of that rule he finally chose track and he ended up loving it. Every year he worked harder and harder at it until he reached state. He later thanked my husband and me for forcing him to do a sport. He said it built up his self esteem and gave him a goal to reach towards. It also taught him that sometimes you do well and sometimes you do badly but you have to keep trying to better yourself. I feel that his experiences in track taught him how to handle defeat and winning in a constructive manner. If there was no winner at the end he would not have tried so hard to be the best he could be.
Being exposed to competition at an early age is beneficial to the healthy development of children. Competition encompasses all areas of our lives. When interviewing for that great new job that is competing against other applicants. If children were not exposed to losing they would be crushed about not getting that position. They might give up all together about interviewing for a job. They might not even strive to attend a university because they are afraid of getting a rejection letter.
Sievert also states that children will “search for ways to improve and find a will to try again”. (321) I agree with her on this point as well. My oldest wanted to be a pitcher for his baseball team. He tried out his first year and didn’t get the position. He didn’t give up every day after school he would go out in the back yard and practice throwing against a board. He would do this for hours sometimes. The next season he tried for the pitching position again and was chosen. If my son hadn’t wanted that particular spot so bad he wouldn’t have kept trying to improve himself.
Look at the story about the female surfer that was a shark attack victim. She had the drive to get back out in the ocean and ride the waves again. She had such devotion that even without an arm she wasn’t going to give up. Maybe what gave her that resolve was being exposed to competition and games earlier in her life. Maybe if she didn’t have the opportunity to fail and that horrific incident happened she would have just given up.
Sievert says “I know the easier route is to keep kids from losing at something rather then face their frustrations”. (322) She is correct it would be easier. Most parents don’t want to see their children upset. It always tore me up a little to see my sons disappointed over losing a game. I just wanted to never let him play again so he couldn’t be hurt anymore. I know as a parent I have an obligation to prepare my children for their future. Part of that preparation is instructing them on how to work hard and be dedicated even if it doesn’t turn out like they have wanted it to. If I pulled them out because they failed I wouldn’t have been living up to my obligation. Winning and losing is what life is all about. Every child will be tested with win or lose situation. Children need to be ready for the challenges so they make the right decisions.
