DIGITAL EXHIBIT
Living in a small town and hearing the term “museum” I always thought about big cities that may have had objects that they thought were of great value. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary a museum is “an institution devoted to the procurement, care, study, and display of objects of lasting interest or value; or a place where objects are exhibited. While in elementary school I went on many field trips to different museums but they were never in my hometown. I was always taught that I was from a small town but never really given any history or informed of any events that may have taken place during previous years.
Now a senior in college, doing my own research, I learn about a museum located in Henderson, North Carolina called Henderson Institute Historical Museum. According to my research this museum is the home to many objects and preserved recordings from Henderson Normal and Industrial Institute which later became known as Henderson Institute.
As I was thinking about a way to discuss the Henderson Institute Historical Museum, I tried to think back to the first time I began to learn about museums in elementary schools. This landed me at using grade level one and aligning my exhibit with

Globish? It Just Doesn't Make Sense

...autobiography The True History and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson Many instructors assign daily critical response paragraphs to ensure students are reading the assigned texts and to help students think critically about the texts they are reading. Critical response paragraphs do not simply summarize the text or evaluate whether or not you like the text; they are a 7- to 10-sentence persuasive and focused analysis, argument, or interpretation about the text. They not only help you think critically about the texts you read but also help you formulate ideas that can be expanded into longer essays. There are four parts to a critical response paragraph:1) an argumentative topic sentence, 2) evidence in the form of quotations or paraphrases for the argument you are making, 3) interpretation of your evidence in relation to the argument, and 4) a strong concluding statement. Follow the guidelines under each part to help you write a critical response paragraph. Do not write a plot summary. Engage the text. 1. The Argumentative Topic Sentence You can think of your critical response paragraph as a mini-essay; your paragraph’s topic sentence (usually the first sentence) must act as both the thesis and the introduction. You should include the author’s name and the title of the text you are writing about, and you must state precisely and concisely what you are going to argue, prove, or analyze about the text. Creating a strong argumentative topic sentence is perhaps the most crucial step in...

A Court Hearing Overview

...the versus the State of Oregon. The defendant appealed from conviction that was a gang-related assault. The defendant hit and beat a 16 year old with a metal baseball bat, and also his friend used a metal rod. The jury gave him guilty verdicts on two counts of first degree assault, and 3 counts of unlawful use of a weapon. The defendant pointed out an error on the first degree assault stating that the state did not prove that his assault caused the victim “serious physical injury” the defendant did not think that his actions did not cause damage to a point where the victim was at risk of dying. The court didn’t show evidence that when Mr. Alvarez hit the victim with the metal baseball bat that his hits created a “substantial risk of death”. Questions presented: 1. Was the beating that Mr. Alvarez gave to the victim enough to cause a substantial risk of death? 2. Should the defendant be able to get rid of the first degree assault to a lowered charge because the prosecutor didn’t show how his actions made the risk of death? 3. What is enough to cause “serious physical injury?” Answers/holding: We conclude, the court decided that because a blow to the victims head hard enough to make a “ding” sound, to have a wound where it exposed the skull, to have to need four stables and, cause the victim to be unconscious it still was a substantial risk of death. Also the scar that was visible on the victim five months after the incident qualified as a “protracted disfigurement” even though...

Marrying Young

...society, the more extreme practice is generally frowned upon as much as it is ill-boding and largely not recommended, however, marriage occurring as early as at eighteen years of age still persists to this day. In 2014, data presented by the Pew Research Center through the March Current Population Survey concluded that the percentage of people being married ages 18 – 32 years of age, though showing decline from recent years, remained at thirty-six percent. Some people believe that young marriage could be an economic boon to those involved as a 2013 study presented through the National Marriage Project's 2013 "Knot Yet" report concluded that the highest percentage of people ages 20 - 28 who considered themselves "highly satisfied" Williams 2 with their lives had been married, as opposed to single or cohabiting. Others, on the other hand, believe that being married so young could in fact prove more strenuous than advantageous as that same organization also published their findings that people who married in their teens were two to three times more likely to divorce than people who married in their twenties or...

...involves the use of a group of interconnected skills to analyze, creatively integrate, and evaluate what you read and hear. To become a critical thinker you must be able to decide whether an author’s opinions are true or false, whether he or she has adequately defended those ideas, whether certain recommendations are practical, as well as whether particular solutions will be effective. The characteristics of that kind of thinking are: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation. Within that movie, there were three points raised in the trial that juror #8 believed argument analysis: 1- The knife that was the murder weapon was unique and the boy was seen with it, although he said he had lost it. 2- The old man gave evidence that he heard the boy say “I’ll kill you” from his apartment below and he saw the boy running from the down stairs of the apartment after rising from bedroom. 3- That the old lady saw the boy kill his father through her window, while a train was passing. In that trial most of the jurors are content to use deductive reasoning. Juror #3 gives his reasons for reaching the conclusion that “it is quite clear that the boy never went to the movie that night, returned home and killed his father with the knife as...

The Claims of Elaine E. Whitaker

...aspects of the story so they can gain a better understanding of the characters. I will examine theses three claims and try to find evidence in the story to support or disprove them. When reading Why I Live at the P.O. it is easy to see why Whitaker would make the claim that “Throughout the narrative, Sister views her own efforts as undervalued” (115) From the very start of the story sister expresses a sense of feeling unappreciated with her comment “There I was over the hot stove, trying to stretch two chickens over five people and a completely unexpected child into the bargain without one moment’s notice” (Welty 415). This comment shows that Sister believes no body cared enough about the effort she puts into making dinner for the family to inform her that there would be more people to feed. As the family sits down to eat the dinner Sister has prepared no one thanks her or even acknowledges the fact that she alone made dinner for everyone. Sister later tells how she was making green-tomato pickle because “Somebody had to do it.” (Welty 418) This gives the reader a sense that Sister feels like if she does not do it no one will. As she is preparing the pickle her mother comes in and instead of praising Sister for taking it upon herself to preserve food for the family, she criticizes Sister stating “H’m! Not very Duratz 2 good...

Synthesis Essay

...Synthesis Essay Different kinds of websites and books argue on the idea of whether the world is going to end in 2012 or not. All of them give reasons to persuade their readers as much as they could. When I went over some of the articles that talk about 2012, I asked, won’t those articles confuse people? Therefore, I have chosen two articles to see their effect over the readers. The first one is by Dr. Dr. Morrison David who is NAI senior scientist who answers a lot of questions that has been asked to NASA about 2012. The second one is by Dr. Archana who talks about different kinds of reasons why the world will end in 2012. Dr. Archana and Dr. Morrison have different opinions about 2012. Dr. Morrison says there is no evidence which proves the ending of the world is in 2012. According to him, people use this idea to make money out of it by creating different kinds of stories to persuade people (Dr. Morrison 7). In fact, He believes these kinds of concepts are products of Hollywood (Dr. Morrison 3). In the other side, Dr. Archana argues by saying “several experts are predicting that the earth is likely to end by the year 2012. The reason could be a human effect or natural disaster. From Chinese theories to scientific predictions the most likely date is the year 2012.” (Dr. Archana 1) Although Dr. Archana and Dr. Morrison agree in the presence of magnetic field, they give different view of what the earth’s magnetic field might cause. Dr. Morrison argues that there is slow movement...

...time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they become more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five-day service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its twenty-fifth birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to minimize costs and thus maximize profits.” Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion. Citing facts drawn from the color-film processing industry that indicate a downward trend in the costs of film processing over a 24-year period, the author argues that Olympic Foods will likewise be able to minimize costs and thus maximize profits in the future. In support of this conclusion the author cites the general principle that “as organizations learn how to do things better, they become more efficient.” This principle, coupled with the fact...
