What’s the problem we are facing?
- Choices constrained because we are restricted by automatic processing, attention not goal driven and subject to manipulation
What is automaticity?
- Automatic process of info, extremely efficient, don’t need to know specifics just general facts
How did automaticity develop in society?
- Learning new routine things that we don’t have to think about→ automatic routines: behavior or thought that we learn from experience and then apply again and again with little thought
Advantages and disadvantages of automatic
- Advantages- helps us get through routines with little effort→ very efficient
- Disadvantages- with so many messages constantly available we are overwhelmed and begin to think that the value of any one message is almost nothing so we make poor exposure decisions and while we are exposing ourselves to more and more messages we are paying less and less attention to them
When do we consciously process messages from the media?
- Attentional exposure state- being aware of messages and actively interacting with the elements in the messages, able to think about it more and remember it.
- Mass media continually reinforce certain behavioral patterns or exposure until they become automatic habits. Advertisers program an unease self-consciousness into our minds so that we are on the lookout for products that will make us feel better.
How do advertisers and producers try and get around automaticity?
- Competition for attention→ appeal to existing audiences, cross-media promotion, target the trail, pay for a spot on a network where people are watching
